If someone invites you for 'nibbles' what would you think was being offered?

I was invited, along with some others, to 'nibbles and drinks' at a fairly recent friend's house last night.

Everyone did the usual and asked if they could bring anything and everyone took a bottle and a little gift for the host.

The 'nibbles' was a small ramekin handed to each of us with peanuts in it. So a nibble if you will. What would you serve if you invited people for nibbles?

Dips, crisps/pitta, crudites, nuts, fruit, cheese & biscuits etc. That's the standard with our friends but I guess a serving of nuts is technically nibbles. I'd be very disappointed though.

StephensLass1977 · 08/02/2026 12:00

I would class this as: mini pizzas, mini kebabs, bao buns, nuts, grapes, Ritz or some sort of mini cracker, cream cheese and some hard cheese for the crackers.

What she offered was certainly not worthy of being bought gifts and bottles of wine.

I like the “what if there was nothing else in the house” comments as I think other people’s concept of “nothing in the house” is different to mine! I’m assuming she’s not in the bones of her arse as she didn’t have to invite people round. We currently have so little in that DP asked if I’d emptied out the fridge (heading to the supermarket in a minute) but if I HAD to provide nibbles right here, right now, I could do crackers, crisps (well, Hula Hoops but that’s fine), small squares of pizza, spring rolls from the freezer, maybe air fry some chickpeas with spices, plenty of nuts and I’d maybe make some cheese straws or something. There’s also some Quality Street not even opened from Christmas. A bit lacklustre but doable. A handful of nuts is…nothing. Like the absolute lowest you could expect. I doubt the company was very good if they’re so stingy, as generosity in other things tends to link to generosity of warmth and good humour. Nibbles are not expensive! £5 would cover crisps and dips at least!

Christmasjoyis · 08/02/2026 12:03

I would make canapés, charcuterie, cheese, bread, dips etc

tara66 · 08/02/2026 12:03

Peanuts may be about 15% of ''nibbles'' - a poor show! How dare they!

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/02/2026 12:07

A small dish of peanuts only is defo a poor show imo. I’d offer all sorts of the things people have already said. Are they stingy, or just a bit clueless?

Why confuse people on purpose? Just say there is plenty of food because if you say nibbles some people will eat in advance and won't be able to enjoy your huge spread.

Anyone I know well enough to invite to my house knows that there will always be food. 😂

GainOfFunctionTories · 08/02/2026 12:08

BIL had a ‘nibbles’ type thing a few months ago. He had carefully laid out grazing board style : monster munch, ritz crackers, cheese strings, Jaffa cakes, grapes olives and skittles 😂

shrunkenhead · 08/02/2026 12:12

Cheeseboard, crackers, chutneys, crisps, anti pasti, nuts etc. I'd probably bake a couple of quiches to slice up and seve cold. Olives, capers, anchovies. That sort of thing id expect but appreciate some people think just nuts and crisps equal "nibbles".

5128gap · 08/02/2026 12:13

Crisps, nuts and anything else that's tasty, savoury and can be consumed in a couple of bites. Canapés basically.

Kalanthe · 08/02/2026 12:14

Olives, hummus and other dips, crisps, baguettes, a cheese board

BringBackCatsEyes · 08/02/2026 12:14

The ramekin of peanuts was not worthy of being described as "nibbles", you'd just invite your mates round for drinks and the nuts would be unremarkable.

AhBiscuits · 08/02/2026 12:15

I would he disappointed with that. Need to add crisps and olives as an absolute minimum.

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 08/02/2026 12:15

Even an invite for just drinks would have more than a ramekin of peanuts.

Some people are not good at hosting and have idea, hopefully you'll all look back and laugh about it.

The other side are stingy people who invite others when they can't afford to.
They are happy to accept food and drinks gift, which are swiftly put away and everyone is served thimbles of drink and measly portions.

CruCru · 08/02/2026 12:16

It depends a bit on what time it is. A friend would have a party that definitely spanned dinner time (from 6pm until 11pm) but would only serve nibbles / canapés. Everyone would get plastered - I now eat a sandwich before I go to one of her parties.

MyDeftDuck · 08/02/2026 12:16

Did anyone up thread suggest bruschetta? So easy to make, cheap as chips too

Imbusytodaysorry · 08/02/2026 12:17

@Makemineacosmo how embarrassing.
You would expect to drink and have a selection of bits to nibble on while drinking.
not a cooked meal , however something to eat .
so a bag of peanuts were bought and a handful handed on arrival . 🙈

Reminds me of the French and Saunders sketch about the boss coming over

Nibbles - more than peanuts!

I've done nibbles, cake, sarnies (cut into triangles, of course!), mini things from M&S. Crisps. Basically a bit of party food.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/02/2026 12:21

If we have people round before the meal and with drinks, we usually have:

Crisps (or similar)
Nuts
Olives
Crudites and hoummous (sometimes)

If people just come for drinks, then:

The above and a selection of canapes, always including three times as many cocktail sausages as anticipated. 6 - 8 canapes pp.

TBF for up to 30, it's as easy to do a proper buffet or hot fork supper.

Windday · 08/02/2026 12:21

wanderingstarz · 08/02/2026 11:19

Crisps, nuts, olives perhaps some cheese and crackers.

This, variety of dips, bread, something hot like spicy cocktail sausages, maybe sausage rolls.
Baked brie.
Basically, tasty soakage.
Definitely not a ramekin of nuts🙄

HoppingPavlova · 08/02/2026 12:22

Cheese and crackers, mini quiche, spinach triangles, salmon blinis, that type of thing.

Well, yes, it's your responsibility to eat before if you know it won't be enough for you. As long as she specified nibbles, she hasn't done anything wrong and yet you seem to be criticising her.

TorroFerney · 08/02/2026 12:23

lottiegarbanzo · 08/02/2026 11:31

Ok but enjoyment of people’s company is more important than whether the host had time to make canapés. If she ran out of time / something came up so she couldn’t shop, would you rather she’d cancelled?

Did you have a nice time?

There is a happy medium between nuts and home made canapes! Is the host odd about food generally op or is she young and not had people round a lot and that's what her family called nibbles? In her head she has given you what she said she would so she must think that's what nibbles are. But it is a bit random.

Were they good nuts?!

Only if you have 30 plates and cutlery and the space to lay it all out and all the people are happy to eat hot food without a table.
