If someone invites you for 'nibbles' what would you think was being offered?

I was invited, along with some others, to 'nibbles and drinks' at a fairly recent friend's house last night.

Everyone did the usual and asked if they could bring anything and everyone took a bottle and a little gift for the host.

The 'nibbles' was a small ramekin handed to each of us with peanuts in it. So a nibble if you will. What would you serve if you invited people for nibbles?

Nibbles to me, nuts, crisps, popcorn. Houmous and pitta, olives, meats and cheese. Things like that really.

NoSnakesHere · 09/02/2026 15:22

Im allergic to peanuts so would be annoyed by that 🤣

If i invited friends over for nibbles it would be crisps/dips/breadsticks/olives etc

Terfarina · 09/02/2026 15:32

I wouldn't go on principle because the n word makes me gag - i am not a bloody hamster!

It just felt a little odd. We were handed a glass and a ramekin at the same time. Maybe I'm just a greedy cow. 😂

A grown adult saying come over for “nibbles” is cringe as fuck anyway. Giving each person a small bowl of peanuts each is bonkers.

At least you know never to accept the invite again I guess? 🤣

Ditto 🤣

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 09/02/2026 15:40

I'd don't even like peanuts. Very poor show by the hosts.

DottyLottieLou · 09/02/2026 15:53

It's the company that counts. Maybe it's all she could afford.

MajorProcrastination · 09/02/2026 15:55

nibbles = nuts, crisps, nachos, twiglets, olives, maybe some dips for the crisps.

BauhausOfEliott · 09/02/2026 16:00

To me, 'nibbles' would mean some light snacks/canapes, maybe a charcuterie board type thing, bread and dips, that kind of thing. I'd assume it might include crisps and nuts, but I wouldn't expect it to be only that.

Then don’t invite for nibbles

hey we are broke - does anyone want to come round for a catch up ? Bring a bottle please

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 09/02/2026 16:31

Crisps, dips, olives, sandwiches. Snacky things. Not just a ramekin of nuts.

Fluffywaffle · 09/02/2026 16:50

I'm a feeder so, cold meats, olives, nuts, cheese, crackers, crisps, grapes etc. And I'd expect the same!

Bonbon249 · 10/02/2026 14:37

I'd be embarrassed to serve only nuts to people at any gathering! I'd serve crisps, nuts probably a charcuterie board, maybe some mini sausage rolls/party food etc. I could go on, it would depend on who was coming and how many but definitely more than a ramekin of nuts!

Usually Prosecco and Colombian vitamins.
Only kidding, usually bowls of snacks rather than food that needs preparation.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 14/02/2026 19:14

Peanuts and crisps but in reality I think I’d put on more of a spread than that.

ZenNudist · 14/02/2026 19:17

I'd expect crisps and nuts. Maybe mini sweet bites.

I'd be annoyed if they didn't have a lot of nibbly things.

At my house it means meats and cheese platter with veggies and dips and snacky bits like pretzels and crisps, baguette and butter. If I’m serving alcohol, I don’t feel I should be giving hungry people booze.

A variety of drinks and snacks.

Myself and my ex were caught out by this many years ago. A couple only a few doors down. We didn't eat anything beforehand. And, like you, there were just a few nuts and crisps. As a result we both became inordinately inebriated! A sobering(!) learning curve! Home was uphill - in more senses than one!

If I was only providing nuts i would have invited people for drinks and not mentioned any food

This. I know I always over cater but I would never serve just peanuts. I'd rather people ate too much to want dinner when they got home than were ravenous and desperate to get food as soon as they left.

NotMeNorI · 15/02/2026 15:58

Makemineacosmo · 08/02/2026 15:56

No. 😂

Sorry, been out shopping. I kind of think of crisps, dips, olives, maybe some cheese & biscuits. Not loads at all but more than about 30 peanuts. We had all eaten beforehand and no one was expecting dinner or anything. It was just a bit ... odd.

We have the same idea of 'nibbles'.

Peanuts... 😂

Rockstick · 15/02/2026 16:35

In my circle of close friends it would mean bowls of crips. Probably fancy ones but not more than that. Everyone would bring drinks and we'd either go outnl later or order takeaway if they evening was going with a swing.

If was out to impress new aquaintances, I'd probably google canapés and make some.

I'm not sure what drinks and nibbles for. Is it late, after dinner or is the idea that you're just popping in for an hour and will go home for dinner?

muddyford · 15/02/2026 17:09

Crisps and nuts. If I really felt like pushing the boat out perhaps tiny pork pies, sausage rolls and Scotch eggs, but then it's almost a mini buffet.
