If someone invites you for 'nibbles' what would you think was being offered?

I was invited, along with some others, to 'nibbles and drinks' at a fairly recent friend's house last night.

Everyone did the usual and asked if they could bring anything and everyone took a bottle and a little gift for the host.

The 'nibbles' was a small ramekin handed to each of us with peanuts in it. So a nibble if you will. What would you serve if you invited people for nibbles?

If I was only providing nuts i would have invited people for drinks and not mentioned any food

CMOTDibbler · 08/02/2026 11:28

Nibbles would be crisps and nuts for me, nothing needing a plate. Not enough to spoil your dinner sort of thing

Laiste · 08/02/2026 11:29

Yeah ... more than just peanuts 🤣

Puffalicious · 08/02/2026 11:30

Just peanuts is pretty poor.

I'm having family & friends over for birthday 'nibbles' from 2pm today. I'm doing posh crisps & tortillas with home-made guacamole & hummus, charcuterie, sourdough bread, cheese & biscuits, grapes, olives & birthday cake.

I'm also making home-made soup, but that's not nibbles, just a thing my friends ask for as they love my soup!

Yup!

TirednessOnToast · 08/02/2026 11:31

Crisps, nuts (available once I knew no one had an allergy), olives.
Dips with crudites & tortilla chips. Some hot pastry type party snacks a la M&S.
Probably also cheese & biscuits, but then I do over-cater a bit.
I'd feel a bit disappointed with peanuts (what about anyone with an allergy)
Not enough to soak up the booze imo.

lottiegarbanzo · 08/02/2026 11:31

Ok but enjoyment of people’s company is more important than whether the host had time to make canapés. If she ran out of time / something came up so she couldn’t shop, would you rather she’d cancelled?

Did you have a nice time?

Lemondrizzle4A · 08/02/2026 11:31

Guess no one had a nut allergy.

Anon501178 · 08/02/2026 11:33

At least maybe a couple of varieties of crisps/nuts, and a couple of types of biscuits/mini cakes such as those tubs of brownie bites/mini flapjacks etc.Quantity would depend on how many people there.

One bowl of peanuts is super stingy and disappointing!

Nutmuncher · 08/02/2026 11:34

My idea of social hell. Instantly makes me think of licked fingers mauling crisps and nuts whilst making small talk with strangers or neighbours.

DoAWheelie · 08/02/2026 11:35

I'd expect nuts, crisps, maybe some cheese and if so, crackers.

Nothing substantial and I'd expect to have eaten a main meal before (or after depending on time). The nibbles are just to avoid people puking from drinking too much on an empty stomach.

I would think canapé type food, not a full buffet or meal - I’d be disappointed with just peanuts!

Something like this.

So everyone supplied the booze and she only paid for peanuts

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/02/2026 11:25

To me it means party food - bowls of crisps and dips, hummus and pita, olives, some little savoury pastry bits that go in the oven from M&S.

I really hate the word “nibbles”, it sounds like the name of a pet rodent.

Haha same, I know someone who had a hamster called nibbles as a child!

Pineapplewaves · 08/02/2026 11:37

Drinks with a selection of crisps and nuts, maybe a box of chocolates being handed round.

Sandwiches, sausage rolls etc would be a buffet. More fancy things to nibble on would be canapés. I would have had a full dinner before I went.

TellMeSomethingGoodAboutMrSchuAndHisTightBreeks · 08/02/2026 11:37

A school mum invited me for drinks and nibbles some years back, it was WKD and fish fingers and smiley faces laid out like a buffet. It was hilarious and I had great time. I always think about her when I'm hosting and providing snacks.

MrMainwaring · 08/02/2026 11:38

"Nibbles" to me would be a variety of snack foods. I would probably have a couple of bowls of crisps; seeded crackers; cruditées; hummus, guacamole and maybe another dip; cubes of cheese; olives; maybe some mini crostini or other canapés; grapes and maybe one other fruit, depending on the season.

HariboFrenzy · 08/02/2026 11:38

To me, nibbles is somewhere between a bowl of crisps and a buffet. Wouldn't expect a spread but at least 3 different things, probably one of which would be crisps/tortillas with dips. Not a meal, but something more substantial than a handful of nuts, certainly!

This. A small mouthful of peanuts isn't worth mentioning and is very misleading. I would assume nibbles meant crisps, olives, maybe some blinis or some cocktail sausage rolls.

Bjorkdidit · 08/02/2026 11:39

I'd expect enough food to serve as a light dinner and soak up the drinks. Plus I'd hope that it was food I'd enjoy and not just beige crap or rubbish pizza.

What were the timings? Could it be late enough that you'd have expected to eat first or clear that you'd be leaving by 7/8 pm at the latest so you'd eat at home afterwards <clutches at straws>

greencheetah · 08/02/2026 11:41

Crisps and nuts

TheGoddessAthena · 08/02/2026 11:41

Snacks. Not a full meal. Maybe crisps, nuts, those wee bits of cheese wrapped in chorizo, olives.

Newmeagain · 08/02/2026 11:43

definitely not nuts! All the things everyone else has mentioned - olives, cheese, etc.

LindorDoubleChoc · 08/02/2026 11:43

Savoury finger food. The nibbles were sadly lacking at the event you went to OP!

Squirrelchops1 · 08/02/2026 11:44

Canapés or antipasti, something like that.

LittleLapwing · 08/02/2026 11:45

I’d just be pleased I’d been asked and pleased to see friends.
