If someone invites you for 'nibbles' what would you think was being offered?

I was invited, along with some others, to 'nibbles and drinks' at a fairly recent friend's house last night.

Everyone did the usual and asked if they could bring anything and everyone took a bottle and a little gift for the host.

The 'nibbles' was a small ramekin handed to each of us with peanuts in it. So a nibble if you will. What would you serve if you invited people for nibbles?

Ah I have just seen your update. If everyone knew they had eaten before I wouldnt be expecting much tbh

Glitchymn1 · 08/02/2026 16:04

Peanuts, crisps, olives.
At a push possibly houmous and breads, cheese, crackers, sliced meats, frozen/baked party bits.

I’d make it clear to eat beforehand, I probably wouldn’t even say ‘nibbles’?! I like to manage expectations!

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 08/02/2026 16:15

Last time I had people over for “nibbles” there was a cheese board, charcuterie, nuts, crisps, cheese straws, olives, variety of dips, pâté…so yes, I’d be very disappointed to just get a ramekin of peanuts!

fruitbrewhaha · 08/02/2026 16:18

When my friends and I do drinks parties we serve plenty of accompanying food. Chips and dips, canapés, charcuterie and cheeses. A bowl of peanuts is crap.

Similar thing happened to us where we got invited for nibbles and there was just crisps, cheese and crackers. This was demolished in half an hour and then the table was bare. Very awkward as they had invited a lot of people and given a large window of time to drop in. So people kept coming and others leaving but those who came later had nothing to eat. We brought wine and chocolate for the hosts and individual toys for their young children.

If i have a party where I am serving nibbles I would do cheese platter, crackers, fruit platter, chicken wings, cocktail sausages, paneer bites, mini samosa’s, mini fish cakes, garlic bread, crisps, dips, pasta salad, crispy calamari, olives, cold meat platters etc. There will be no shortage of food! 😂

BoudiccaRuled · 08/02/2026 16:25

If I invited people, or was invited for "drinks" I'd probably eat something before going and wouldn't be surprised if there was also nuts, canapes etc. I have never encountered "nibbles" as part of an invitation and would probably judge....

Nibbles isn’t a buffet , it isn’t a meal, it isn’t really “food” - what you described is more a light buffet

it sounds like your host undercatered on nibbles - I would say they had the right variety, just insufficient for the numbers invited

so for nibbles I would eat as normal
during the day whereas for your idea of nibbles I would be having only a light tea

I’d not describe that as nibbles either to be honest. More a buffet.

Horsedoglover59 · 08/02/2026 16:47

If I did drinks and nibbles, I'd think that this is exactly what M&S or other supermarkets are there for - nibbles would be crisps, olives, stuffed or not, mini sausage rolls and cheeses and crackers at the very minimum.

Iamthemoom · 08/02/2026 16:52

If I invited people for drinks and nibbles it would be a variety of crisp/nut type snacks, olives, canapés, cheese and charcuterie boards.

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 08/02/2026 16:56

Couple of different crisps (some vegetable ones probably), couple of different nuts, olives, cocktail sausages, dips and tortilla chips and veg sticks. cheese straws. That would be my basic nibbles. Might add a bit of oven food depending on the occasion.

outerspacepotato · 08/02/2026 16:57

Some appetizers or food board setup. Some carbs, protein, nuts, fruits and veg. Munchies.

Inviting people over for peanuts is batshit. I'd be giving Ms Southwest Airlines (a budget airline that serves a small bag of peanuts for your flight) a big swerve.

Mydahliasareshit · 08/02/2026 17:28

Wot not even Twiglets?
That's just mean!

Retrogamer · 08/02/2026 17:43

Usually fruit, meats, cheese. Then drinks. Nothing massive though since we've all already eaten.

SpringTimeIsRingTime · 08/02/2026 18:00

Tight gits.

CrushingOnRubies · 08/02/2026 18:39

Crisps, peanuts (checking for allergies) crudite and hummus, Doritos and salsa, a cheese & pineapple hedgehog, olives, maybe some warm canapés. Depending on the amount of people invited and how much time I have to prep.

TheNoisyGreyLion · 08/02/2026 18:42

Drinks and finger food eg filo prawns, crisps and dips, olives, Parma ham etc

SaltyMarsh · 08/02/2026 19:32

The nicest nibbles thing I went to was thrown by an elderly neighbour, 4.30-6.30 pm. There were crisps, olives, nuts, little warm cocktail sausages on sticks & tiny French toasts with paté. The wines were amazing and he rang a little bell bang on 6.30 as a sign we should leave. 😁

lottiegarbanzo · 08/02/2026 20:09

Why would people be eating before pre-dinner drinks? Do you mean you’d had a good lunch? Or some sort of afternoon tea as the drinks party would push dinner later than you’re used to?

That’s not nibbles though. Nibbles does not indicate enough food to provide a proper meal. It means a small amount of food along with a drink.

Makemineacosmo · 08/02/2026 22:21

It just felt a little odd. We were handed a glass and a ramekin at the same time. Maybe I'm just a greedy cow. 😂

Yeah, I knew it would not be a full meal but I would not serve only crackers, crisps and cheese. Seems a bit too less. At least a bit more food, when you are serving alcohol. In my mind nibbles should be like starters but not a main course.

Yeah, I understood that after that experience that my idea of nibbles and theirs was very different! 😂 I have attended other parties where they said nibbles but it was canapés not just 3 items like crackers, cheese, crisps. Seemed bit stingy.

As you can guess I’m a bit of a feeder! 😂 Can’t invite ppl home and send them back starving! 🤣

StarlightLady · 09/02/2026 09:17

I fell victim of this in another way once. I was invited for nibbles once so had a light dinner before going to see them. I took a bottle and when l got there it was a full blown 3 course meal. I don’t think my tummy ever forgave me.
