If someone invites you for 'nibbles' what would you think was being offered?

I was invited, along with some others, to 'nibbles and drinks' at a fairly recent friend's house last night.

Everyone did the usual and asked if they could bring anything and everyone took a bottle and a little gift for the host.

The 'nibbles' was a small ramekin handed to each of us with peanuts in it. So a nibble if you will. What would you serve if you invited people for nibbles?

A variety of drinks and snacks.

ElizabethVonArnim · 08/02/2026 11:19

I might try a bit harder than that but, to be fair, it does what it says on the tin. Did you have a nice time?

lovemenomore · 08/02/2026 11:19

Nibbles for me would be nuts, olives, crisps, dips. Maybe pitta & hummus - defo more than nuts!?

Changingplace · 08/02/2026 11:19

I would think canapé type food, not a full buffet or meal - I’d be disappointed with just peanuts!

wanderingstarz · 08/02/2026 11:19

Crisps, nuts, olives perhaps some cheese and crackers.

LushLemonTart · 08/02/2026 11:20

More than that!

3luckystars · 08/02/2026 11:20

Little pastry things, cheeses, some chicken wings, maybe sausage rolls, cheese, skewery things, lots of little desserts.

Starters and desserts really.

DilkushaKitchen · 08/02/2026 11:20

Crisps, nuts, olives, dips, snacky things that you put in the oven maybe. More than a pot of peanuts 😁

3luckystars · 08/02/2026 11:20

Yes definitely crisps and dips also.

Bombinia · 08/02/2026 11:20

Nuts, tortilla chips, crisps, popcorn, hummus. At least that's what I serve at my drinks and nibbles parties.

endofthelinefinally · 08/02/2026 11:20

I would serve small sandwiches, snacks, dips, cheese and biscuits, crudites, curry puffs, anything you can eat easily with fingers. Enough to make a supper.

Bonkers1966 · 08/02/2026 11:21

Finger food or similar. Host sounds cheap AF.

x2boys · 08/02/2026 11:21

Crisps ,nuts ,cakes not that I have ever been invited for nibbles ,I would assume it would just be snacks and would eat before hand.

That would be a supper though ?

sillylittlerabbit · 08/02/2026 11:23

Crisps and nuts! A lot of the other items I would expect to be called canapés or a light buffet.

SPQRomanus · 08/02/2026 11:23

How embarrassing to just offer peanuts, that's terrible!
To me nibbles means crisps, nuts, olives, couple of dips with crudités and about 6 or 7 decent sized canapes, some of which would be hot.

gudetamathelazyegg · 08/02/2026 11:24

just peanuts 😭 if I invited friends for nibbles I would go all out tbh but going to nibbles I would expect at a minimum chips/crisps and dips! Maybe some frozen party food type stuff or charcuterie

justtheotheronemrswembley · 08/02/2026 11:24

I read your thread title and immediately thought: "It'll be a handful of peanuts". I wasn't wrong, was I? 😂

endofthelinefinally · 08/02/2026 11:24

Well I guess it would depend on the time of day. There are so many choices.
Drinks and nibbles suggest around 6 pm to me. So not dinner, but a decent snack.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/02/2026 11:25

To me it means party food - bowls of crisps and dips, hummus and pita, olives, some little savoury pastry bits that go in the oven from M&S.

I really hate the word “nibbles”, it sounds like the name of a pet rodent.

gototogo · 08/02/2026 11:25

Nibbles to me would be nuts, olives, crisps, crudités and dips perhaps canapés or a cheese board but I’d expect people to have eaten prior

Rattai · 08/02/2026 11:25

Was anyone asked about a nut allergy beforehand?

ImPamDoove · 08/02/2026 11:26

A ramekin of peanuts is hilariously tight.

If I have the ‘girls’ round for drinks, I make, (ok my husband makes), guacamole to have with tortilla chips, crostini with various toppings, a crudité platter and bowls of olives.

HangingOutAtTheRialto · 08/02/2026 11:26

Canapés

Bananafofana · 08/02/2026 11:27

I would serve a cheese platter with at least 3 cheeses, grapes, chutney etc and a couple of different crackers. Nuts ans olives and crisps. Substantial nibbles (but still not a meal) I would get a couple of M&S canapé packs and heat in oven so some hot nibbles.

what you were served, while technically correct, would not meet my expectation of being served nibbles with drinks!
