If someone invites you for 'nibbles' what would you think was being offered?

I was invited, along with some others, to 'nibbles and drinks' at a fairly recent friend's house last night.

Everyone did the usual and asked if they could bring anything and everyone took a bottle and a little gift for the host.

The 'nibbles' was a small ramekin handed to each of us with peanuts in it. So a nibble if you will. What would you serve if you invited people for nibbles?

Canapes, crisps, cheese and biscuits in addition to the nuts.

NeverSeenThatColourBlue · 08/02/2026 11:47

If I say "nibbles" I mean arrive hungry because the dining table will be heaving under the weight of a cheeseboard, a charcuterie board, a range of baked goods, crisps, a few different salads and a selection of tapas.

UniDaysAcoming · 08/02/2026 11:47

A variety of snacks based on formality, culture and cuisine - but all finger food / canape / Hors d'oeuvre type things.

If casual with friends you see a lot, it could be as simple as olives, crisps, cheeses and nuts - but not just nuts.

Guess no one had a nut allergy.

Most people would know if their friends had a nut allergy or not

redskydelight · 08/02/2026 11:48

"Drinks and nibbles" to me just means that you shouldn't expect anything resembling a meal and should eat before you come / plan to eat afterwards.

I would consider the nibbles to be an afterthought to the "drinks" part and whilst I probably would provide crisps, sausage rolls, cheese & crackers as per some of the suggestions on here, I wouldn't have an issue with just peanuts (or a single share bag of crisps, for example).

I’d just be pleased I’d been asked and pleased to see friends.

Yes, there's that too. It depends also on relationships and how you gel together. But as a minimum I would at least get some crisps in along with the nuts.

SandAndSea · 08/02/2026 11:49

I'd expect a variety of snacks but not a full meal. I'd eat beforehand.

I read your thread title and immediately thought: "It'll be a handful of peanuts". I wasn't wrong, was I? 😂

My thoughts too!
Personally, if I was inviting friends for drinks I would have plenty of snacks available eg. Crisps, cheeses, crackers, olives, baby tomatoes and gherkins, crusty bread etc. something to soak up the alcohol 😋

redskydelight · 08/02/2026 11:50

I think I view "drinks and nibbles" as akin to "tea and biscuits" at a different time of the day. The biscuits are not the main point of the get-together and not essential or extensive.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/02/2026 11:51

Nibbles, obviously.
Dry, finger food that can be picked up with your hand and doesn't need a plate.

I have drinks and nibbles at my place because I don't have enough cutlery for anything else.

It could include some cooked stuff like canapes, but mainly I'd be expecting things like nuts, doritos, olives, crisps, etc.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/02/2026 11:52

If I was a rabbit I would assume lettuce and maybe some celery, but on the basis I am not then, nuts, crisps and things that can be picked up and eaten with fingers.

gingercat02 · 08/02/2026 11:53

Crisps and dips, cheesy biscuits, little bowls of nuts scattered around, bread sticks or croistini, bought in snack sized parties.

It's up to the allergic person to let the host know in advance if they are so allergic they cannot even be in a room with nuts.

macshoto · 08/02/2026 11:53

Certainly more than just peanuts!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/02/2026 11:53

Plenty of nice canapés, or at least carrot sticks and crisps with dips. Whoever heard of giving each guest a ramekin of peanuts? Weird!!

Not everybody likes peanuts anyway - they’re far from the nicest nuts IMO.

pouletvous · 08/02/2026 11:53

M&S picky bits / canapes

were you starving?

Why confuse people on purpose? Just say there is plenty of food because if you say nibbles some people will eat in advance and won't be able to enjoy your huge spread.

Thingscouldntgetanyworse · 08/02/2026 11:54

I would expect crackers, cheese, meats, that type of board.

Own ramekin was maybe for hygiene? Otherwise people are all putting their hands in the same peanut bowl.

JLou08 · 08/02/2026 11:55

Nibbles would be a light snack for me, a few nuts or crisps or crackers with cheese. Anything more would be a buffet.

BillieWiper · 08/02/2026 11:56

Did they not accept your offers of bringing things? I guess if I wasn't told what to bring it would just be a bottle.

A ramekin of peanuts per person. Hmmm. It sounds like the sort of thing that someone could just about get away with calling 'nibbles'..I mean it's what you'd feed a hamster.

I'd be serving charcuterie (just supermarket stuff) and or smoked salmon, couple of cheeses, olives, nuts, crisps, cheese straws, nice bread. Maybe couple of salads.

I guess that could be erring into buffet territory. But I would never call an invite either 'nibbles' or 'buffet'. I'd just say there will be food and drink. Or I'd ask people to bring stuff if I couldn't be arsed to do much.

The nibbles you speak of would be ok if you were then going on to have a meal.

Maybe I'm a bit of a feeder.

TwistedWonder · 08/02/2026 11:57

Little snacks like M&S type party food.

TubeScreamer · 08/02/2026 11:57

Crisps and possibly cheese

evtheria · 08/02/2026 11:58

I’d expect at least a little variety - not just the nuts, especially as I’m not keen unless they’re super salty or a spicy coated type. So nuts, olives on sticks, cheese twists, etc. in separate dishes. Like 3, unless you’re me and go crazy with about 10 because I bloody love snacks.

Netcurtainnelly · 08/02/2026 11:58

Blimey weren't they embarrassed serving that.
