A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

We were blissfully asleep at 4:30am when the phone rang. It’s never a good feeling when that happens but I groped my way to it in the pitch-dark and answered reasonably coherently.
It was our burglar-alarm company alerting us that our connection (which is monitored 24/7) was down as our broadband had gone off. We leave the alarm set at night to protect downstairs as we were once burgled in our last house while we were asleep.
Anyway there was nothing we could do and it just thoroughly woke us up and made sure we then couldn’t get back to sleep….

MissConductUS · 28/01/2026 12:07

Thanks for sharing your unfortunate awakening news @Halsall. We used to have a monitored alarm system and got calls like that, too. A few years ago, we replaced it with a Ring system, which is much less expensive and less of a hassle. We installed a Ring doorbell camera and some outdoor cameras with motion-triggered floodlights. I'm out in the woods, and we were also burgled once here many years ago.

I went out to get the mail yesterday, and saw our mailbox almost entirely encased in snow. DH shoveled it out on Monday, so this was the first time I'd seen it. It is a large mailbox, ideal for small packages. It also locks, which is nice peace of mind when you have something valuable being delivered by mail.

Hello all 👋🧚!
I am still here and reading x
I am having a bit of a difficult time at the moment, but I do miss the 'over the garden fence chats ' !!

Awaiting a doctor's phone call at the moment as I have not been well and been on inhalers and she is ringing to check on me .

Had x ray this morning.

Beautiful day here though..
Walked home from hospital in fresh sunshine which felt good.
10 mins to mams house to collect paperwork for something and 10 mins back to my house .

Felt good.

Breathless and painful ..but weather was wonderful 😊 😊!

Sorry you're not well.

Do ask for montelukast. It was a game-changer for me and reduced my asthma attacks considerably.

@bizzey thinking about you and sending 🩷

Sorry you're not well.

Do ask for montelukast. It was a game-changer for me and reduced my asthma attacks considerably.

My late DH was on montelukast, and it worked so well that his back-up salbutamol inhalers kept going out of date!

MrsSPenguins · 28/01/2026 19:22

Sending love to you @Bizzey hope things improve soon.

Well done @Mumtobabyhavoc

Nice day here today for January and about 8C so DH had the afternoon off and we started the hedgehog and squirrel stones path, cleared some leaves and cleaned the floors downstairs. We had a squirrel come and watch us do the path and about 20 birds were chirping plus the 3 silkies following us. Did about 3 hours 45 mins.

Having fish and chips from the fish and chip van with baked beans.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/01/2026 19:32

Your yard sounds like it will be amazing this spring @MrsSPenguins ! 😍

I'm definitely dragging my butt this morning (doing nothing). Taking my mum to a med appt in a couple hours, so have used that to mean there isn't time to do anything else. 🙄

MissConductUS · 28/01/2026 22:45

I'm sorry you're poorly, @bizzey. It's lovely that your doctor rang to check on you, though.

I also swear by montelukast, but I only take it for seasonal allergies.

Umanresources · 28/01/2026 23:43

@DandyDandylion you’ve done what I need to do. I should sort out the coats which never get put away properly. I did sort out some of the shoes, bags, scarves and gloves and put them into our new Ikea chest of drawers. It looks a lot better now.

I’ve had to postpone my dental appointment, but I’ve no idea when I’ll get there again. My very large box arrived today. It has 40 dressings, so I’m assuming that the nurse will be coming for at least 20 more weeks, twice a week. I didn’t think it was going to be so long.

My DD has suggested we have a pamper day tomorrow. I did get face masks, under eye patches and hand creams, along with hair scrunchies. Looking forward to it so much. I haven’t been able to wash my hair for a week, but I did get some shower caps with shampoo and conditioner in it, so I’ve tried that and my hair looks better than it did. I bought a couple of hair cleaning options, including dry shampoo, although I’m hoping my DD will wash it for me in the bathroom.

@Mumtobabyhavoc sounds like you did a good job with explaining compromise to Havoc, well done to them for using it correctly.

@sproutsandparsnips I hope your son’s hand is recovering. Apart from a very windy day earlier in the week, I think we seem to have missed out on the storms hitting the country.

I’m going to have an early - ish night, so goodnight all. Sweet dreams. 😴

DandyDandylion · 29/01/2026 18:09

Havoc I will never forget the puzzled look on dd’s face when she told me “I didn’t bite her because she is black, I bit her because she took a toy off me”. So clearly the preschool hadn’t handled that very well as this was the first I had heard of the incident. She hasn’t bitten anyone since as far as I know. Sounds like you dealt with it perfectly. I liked the books “how to talk so kids will listen” when mine were little like yours. Have some chill time if you can, they are such hard work at this age.

We love our ring cameras MissC, especially the one at the field as I can watch the two ponies eating haylage and grooming each other. A neighbour was burgled recently and I do thing the visible ring cameras are a deterrent.

Glad you got out and enjoyed the sunshine Bizzey.

Cooking baked beans to go with chippy tea is an ingenious idea MrsPenguin, I will be stealing that. I think you should have a penguin stone somewhere in your garden but maybe that would blow your cover 🤣

Enjoy your pampering Uman 💆

I will be doing the 8am dance tomorrow to try to get a same day doctors appointment. If I was allowed I would’ve made one for tomorrow 2 weeks ago but that is not how it works.

Well its 3am. And im laying in bed with a fan on the carpet trying to dry it after i spilt a pint of blackcurrant juice on it (Carpet is light grey)

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/01/2026 06:21

Hello lovelies 😊
Had the nicest visit today from a friend over from Europe.
We're back to rain and it has warmed up to 9c.

Sorry about the spill ImDone. 😲
Dandy, thanks for the advice. 🩷

MissConductUS · 30/01/2026 15:55

I suspect that carpet is a lost cause, Imdone.

DandyDandylion · 30/01/2026 20:00

It’s very quiet on here, where is everyone?
I’ve had a quiet end to the week as dd has been off. She should be fine to go back on Monday. It actually has been quite nice as the weather wasn’t great so I have enjoyed watching films with her and generally lounging about.

What movies hwve you been watching?

MrsSPenguins · 30/01/2026 21:28

Thanks @Mumtobabyhavoc so lovely to have a friend over from Europe, glad it was nice.

Thanks @DandyDandylion Glad you had a nice time with your DD.

Hope you can rescue the carpet @ImDoneOnceAndForAll2 I love Dr Beckmanns.

We are hopefully doing more path tomorrow. The silkies are like toddlers let loose in the garden and were nibbling at the dianthus today. We are getting bulbs coming out now.

We got our fruit and veg box from the farm shop today, not so much available as it's winter but has mixed salad, sweet dumpling squash, kalibos cabbage, potatoes, apples, kalettes, onions and also got eggs. Tonight we had a salad with roasted sweet dumpling squash, roast chicken, parmesan, mixed leaves, walnuts. Very healthy but then I had 2 jam doughnuts. 🤣 Have a Waitrose click and collect order tomorrow to pick up.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

sproutsandparsnips · 30/01/2026 22:58

That sounds a lovely visit @MumtobabyhavocI love to have visits from friends.
All sounds nice food @MrsSPenguins- very inventive!
Got home from work to a peaceful house - DH in pub, DS1 away at uni and DS2 in work. Had quiche (bought), coleslaw (bought) and salad (leftover from yesterday).
Busy day tomorrow. DS playing rugby and I’m cooking for teams post match. Then playing with other team Sunday and somehow ended up cooking for that too…..
I find @ImDoneOnceAndForAll2that liquids are always more when spilt than when they are where they are supposed to be…..

sproutsandparsnips · 30/01/2026 22:59

Also - great to hear from you @bizzey.Sorry things are difficult at the moment.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/01/2026 01:21

Imdone: You likely need a pro cleaning for the carpet .
Penguins: Dinner sounds great!
Dandy: Scooby-Doo and Guess Who here!

Low cloud/fog and raining here. Temp is 9c.
Had chicken pie and corn on the cob for lunch which baby shared. Havoc and baby both had a decadent bowl of penne with butter as well. 🤷‍♀️

Have got a sheet pan meal in the oven: salmon and prawns from frozen that I've put pesto on: sprouts and asparagus with evoo, salt and garlic; and wild and brown rice on the stove. I've got cappuccino froyo for dessert and a big bag of Swiss dark chocolate squares I picked up from Costco.

Where has the day gone????

OP posts:
Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/01/2026 03:00

Burned the rice. 😵‍💫
Threw rice and pot into the garbage.
Now eating froyo.
Baby took my chocolate.

Well, the local football team (NFL) lost. At least we don't have to watch them being annihilated by Seattle next week.

Thanks for the new thread havoc :-)

My Eagles ended with a very disappointing season. Last year we were gearing up for the Super Bowl party. We were hoping for a repeat of that fabulous party.

I suspect that carpet is a lost cause, Imdone.

I cant believe but but i got the stain out...
Used a carpet cleaner with a little brush attached (Dr Beckmanns)
Then rubbed it with a towel as much as possible to dry it
Then left a fan, running over it for about 6 hours (more to dry it out)
Then baking soda for about 8 hours, then hoovered it and its fine. It feels a little rough under foot but it looks back to normal :)
No sign of the stain...
Im amazed

bizzey · 31/01/2026 05:19

Thank you all for thinking of me and sending me good wishes..
It has made me very happy 🌹🌹🥰!

Chest is so much better now .
Those steroids are a little miracle ....!

I have had bursts of energy and been cooking.
Spicy sausage casserole in the slow cooker day before yesterday (I think 🤔 🤔 ..lost track of days actually!😅)

And a Coffee and Bailey's cake.
I made it as a pound cake as I am lazy ..

But I think next time I will do it as a smaller round cake/layered one.

Took ages to cook inside , all while the top was getting a bit (a lot )burnt !!

But it is edible , 1st time , and lovely and sweet !

My sleep /clock is all awry at the moment as I have been so tired some days , I have just been sleeping when I want.

Hence ...being awake at 5 AM wanting to do things .

It is too early to do that though .
So I have a cup of tea and a slab of cake .
And catching up on some tv .
😅😅
