A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

Earlier today I daringly put a hot cross bun in the toaster and took a bag of recycling out to the bin at the side of the house. I'm not a fast mover these days and the toaster has a mind of its own, so there was a 50/50 chance that I'd come back in to a smoky kitchen and a couple of carbonised hockey pucks. But no - it was perfectly toasted! These small wins are ridiculously pleasing.

Why did Chris Tarrant ever leave?
Its not the same with Clarkson

My car wheezed into life this morning and I coaxed it into action. Made it to work, parked in a decent spot (because a lot of people didn't have to get to work...).

It's still bitterly cold tonight, too cold for snow in fact. I'll hopefully get the car started again tomorrow morning. DD is heading to a brunch for a friend's birthday and it's too cold for her to walk to the station and wait around for a train (and there's quite a long stretch of the legs at the other end too), so I'm going to give her a lift.

We went shopping ahead of this polar blast and will be enjoying sausage and mash tomorrow evening.

mathanxiety · 24/01/2026 03:41

Congratulations to your DS on his new job, MissC.
I hope you're continuing to recover smoothly.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/01/2026 07:48

I hope everyone is having a good sleep or leisurely morning so far. It's past 11:30pm here and I'm watching Sing with the dc. We were out to the observatory at SFU on Burnaby Mtn earlier, so it was a planned late night. We saw the Orion nebula and the moon through telescopes, but were far back in line for the actual observatory telescope and the temp is just 1c, so I brought the kids home. I had them in their snowsuits, but I was freezing with just my parka. I should have worn my snow pants, too.

I need to try to get a GP appointment next week, I think my menopause symptoms are picking up as I keep waking at 4am drenched in sweat 😥
In better news I am about to visit my young pony who I am preparing for his first rider.

A wait of an hour and 15 minutes to see the orthopaedic surgeon. The consultant was in emergency surgery, fixing someone's broken ankle. The audacity of breaking a bone or 25 when I needed to see him!

I saw his registrar. I have a big toe joint that I can't move voluntarily (with my mind) but when I hold it and waggle it with my finger, it's fine and not painful. Plus I have a painful callous on the ball of my big toe. I was sent for another x-ray which was a 55 minute wait. They are referring me to be fitted for orthotics because my foot has turned inwards. They don't know why my big toe is misbehaving but they think it's the FHL tendon.

I then went to the infectious diseases doctor who will probably discharge me but wanted blood tests to confirm that my inflammation and infection markers are back in the normal range. Before I went he let me know that one of the antibiotics that I have now finished (after 12 weeks) has been known to affect tendons.

So I think the antibiotic has weakened my FHL tendon, leading to my big toe being unable to support my body weight, leading to the foot turning inwards and the very painful callous. If I'm right, I will need different physiotherapy exercises and the good news is that it will get better eventually.

The wait for blood tests was another hour so I left home at 9am and returned just before 4.30pm.

I then had to call the service plan people for the old car because it wasn't cancelled when we sold it. More stress while that gets sorted out.

GP will call tomorrow about my throat and post nasal drip, hopefully referring me to ENT. The physiotherapist will call to follow up after today's appointments. A recruiter will call about a new role that has come up, and the garden landscaper who gave us a quote last year to build a patio will call round to redo the quote. We are going to hire him because the decking is now rotten through and quite treacherous.

On Wednesday I will do nothing.

Myrtlelion, was it ciprofloxacin out of interest, if you don't mind me asking?
Hope it gets better soon

Just sitting in emerge with Baby who fell out of bed early this morning. 😓

Oh no, hope all ok, they like to worry us. I will never forget my 18 month old dd running straight into our holiday let, up onto the bed via a bedside table and straight over onto the floor. I hadn’t had time to draw breath.
i have had a busy day and just sat down from pulling a tray of brownies out of the oven.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/01/2026 18:52

Thanks @DandyDandylion
was triaged around 7am, seen and discharged an hour later. 😅
Got home, threw laundry in, made pancakes & an iced latte, hung up laundry, spilled and cleaned up latte #2 🤬 and now lying down with Baby. Have got a cold pack on bruise to Baby's forehead.

It's sunny and -2c here. 🧊

Hope your baby is fine @Mumtobabyhavoc

Just did 3.5 hours gardening and cleaning downstairs floors from DSs mud with DH. In the garden we also did the RSPB Birdwatch count. We got garden path 1 finished, cleaned the outside of chicken house and shelters and cleaned outside of shed, downstairs floors and cleared almost all the leaves. Lots of bulbs growing.

Umanresources · 24/01/2026 21:25

@Mumtobabyhavoc hope baby is well on the way to recovery. When I was a child our next door neighbour grew comfrey, which she used to dry in her shed and it was known as knitbone. My DM used to steep the leaves in boiling water, when it was tepid she would soak a pad or bandage in it for bruises and aches and pains. Nowadays you can get comfrey ointment online! So much easier, but still as effective.

i had a bit of a shock today. At 8.45 am, someone came to the door. It was a district nurse who had come to put dressings on my legs. I had no idea that anyone was coming to me, I thought I had to go back to the doctor’s to the nurses there. Apparently, someone will be coming here every other day and I expecting a big box of dressings. Another plus is that I will probably get a quicker referral to the vascular clinic. They are monitoring my blood pressure and oxygen levels too, which surprisingly were almost normal, despite the shock first thing. Turns out she has the same first name as me, so easy to remember. She was here for a couple of hours today, but I don’t think it will be quite as long next time. As the nurses can arrive any time from 8 am to 7pm I’ll have to be on early morning alert! I have no idea how long this is going to last. Also if it doesn’t improve the doctor will have to pay me a home visit. It must have been at least 15 years since that happened.

I'm now on the hunt for a new chair, if I have to spend more time with my legs elevated. What a weekend!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/01/2026 21:45

Dandy, they sure can move fast! That must've been shocking!
Penguins, very busy day for you! I was going to do the wild bird count with the dc here last month, but we already had something scheduled. I'll keep my eyes open for the next one.
Uman, it sure is taking a long time for healing. It's nice that you are getting proactive care now. 💐

Have just sort of dozed for a bit and feel a little refreshed. I'm going to make lunch and another latte. Poor Havoc has been parked in front of the tv all day so far but came in and laid down beside us for a little while. I think it was unsettling to wake up this morning and find me and baby gone and my mum explaining we were at the hospital.

Baby just woke up.

See if you can just cancel the cheque, or direct debit. Sometimes though these things end up on credit cards and you have to phone up.

I did cancel the direct debit but couldn't call them to cancel the plan because they were shut on the Saturday afternoon. And it was the Saturday before Christmas. But legally they couldn't have provided the service because I didn't own the car any more.

Waiting for a case handler to be assigned and then they will get back to me.

Yes it was! What's your experience?

My surgeon has arranged an ultrasound on the foot so we might be able to see more of what's going on.

MyrtleLion · 25/01/2026 09:45

It's been a busy week, but I was triaged for ENT for my hoarse voice which restricted my breathing and will be seen in April.

All blood tests were normal. The landscaper will quote again for the garden work. It took so long to try and get a third electrician quote that I gave up and went with the cheapest. He'll come round on the 16th to fix a two way switch and install a new socket for the electric car.

Some dental appointments for a filling then a crown. Fortunately DH has dental insurance which pays 80% of the bills up to £2,000. Unfortunately that limit hasn't increased in 10 years so it's limiting the amount of work that can be done in any one year. I'm a victim of poor NHS dentistry in the 1970s and 80s when they just drilled children's teeth.

To be honest it's been a lot in the last week. I'm only just off the antibiotics and I may be overdoing it.

MissConductUS · 25/01/2026 10:32

Havoc, how's the baby doing? Bruises often get worse before they get better.

Myrtle, dental insurance in the US also has low limits like that. It's almost useless if you're having anything big done. I'm in the process of getting three dental implants, with a fourth to follow in a few months. The expense is eye watering, but I really need them done.

Pengiuns, it's so cold here that nobody is doing anything in the garden. I envy that you're in a warmer climate.

We had a lovely dinner last night at a new, fairly posh restaurant that opened quite near us, to celebrate DS's new job, and my birthday, which was last week.

Someone rang the doorbell last night at 8:00 PM, which is really unusual. DH answered the door in his bathrobe. It was a DoorDash (like Deliveroo) driver with four bags of groceries, which we did not order. There was a bit of a language barrier, but DH speaks enough Spanish to get him to understand that the order was for a house a bit further down the street.

We did get back to the Hudson River for another walk yesterday. We only walked about a mile, as it was cold and windy. The sky was beautiful yesterday.

I quite agree. I had three implants a few years ago and I was able to have the work done from January to June, so it spanned two years. I'd already had to spend the previous year whitening my teeth in preparation so he could colour match correctly. But it was definitely worth it.

I'm surprised you had to whiten your teeth. When I've had implant crowns done in the past, they've used a digital gadget to measure the exact color of my teeth, and then the crown is made to match it.

The great blizzard of '26 has started here.

Good morning everyone. 🥱
I've been awake since 4am and it's almost 5:30. I'm not impressed. 😭
Have got two 😇😇 beside me. 🥰
It's -4c here. Forecast shows rain next week and temps 10c+.
Miss, are you under the polar vortex atm? There have been some record low temps here, ie -40c range, in the east, Ontario. 🥶
Not fun.

Not fun.

It's -13 C here now, but it's supposed to go up to a high of -5 C later, with the rest of the week forecast to be similar.

I had slow-cooked pork ribs with a homemade BBQ sauce for my main last night. The ribs were fabulous. They came with baked beans, coleslaw and fries (chips), followed by raspberry cheesecake from a great local bakery for dessert. It was a meal to remember.

And now, we wait for the storm to pass. Clearing the driveway and deck are going to be a huge job. We have a small, petrol powered, single stage Honda. snowblower. It's fine up to 6-8 inches, but it's heavy to push through the snow. Yesterday, DH went shopping for a bigger one. Our Honda power equipment deal had one in stock, but it was huge, way more than we wanted, so we ordered a smaller two stage blower, which should be here in a week or so. It's this one:

https://powerequipment.honda.com/snowblowers/models/hss724at-hss724atd

It has an electric start, an LED headlight, and tracks (like a tank) that push it along for you. All you have to do is steer it and decide where to point the discharge chute. This is really more for DH, as he does most of the snow removal, but I think I can use it after I'm recovered.

Wishing all who are under the weather a speedy recovery.

I hate having to get people out to do jobs, Myrtle we are trying to get a quote for a new gate post. It is easy if you can use someone again or get a recommendation. If not it feels like a punt in the dark. I know all about 80s dentistry, I distinctly remember when my dentist retired and I got a young lady with a totally different attitude. We have insurance for our dc but just pay for ourselves as I think over the longer term it works out cheaper.

MissC my dd would live in Greenland if she could so definitely envies your climate right now. Me not so much as I still have to work, drive and look after two ponies whatever the weather. Hope you have plenty of provisions and avoid the worst of it.

Dd and I have had a girls day out at the zoo. We went during Twixmas because our local zoo had a come back free in the new year offer. So today was our free trip and we enjoyed it much more. The first visit was very rushed as we normally go once a year and wanted to see everything. Today we meandered about in a much more mindful way.

ps when did Havoc become thread Mum/OP? 🧡

BC me and DS are in the middle of a 1500 piece puzzle at the moment! We have stacks of Jan van haasteren puzzles as my grandmother did them during Covid and passed them on to us. Hope you’re feeling better now!

oh dear dandy, that’s a bummer for DS 🙁

miss my friend in Suffern near you is sending me pictures of her garden, and the snow is so high already!

I went out to eat with one of my brothers to a lovely cafe, and then on to an art shop. I bought pencil crayons last week but they were rubbish, and my little daughter wanted them, so I passed them on and got another pack to try. Also cheap and cheerful but hopefully this time the colours will be what they look like 😅. There were two differently pink pencils, but when I coloured with them they were both purple. It was very odd.
