A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions or controversies here - unless it is along the lines of "scone" v "scahn" and jam or cream first. Then it's gloves off! 😁

How did this start? I have found v.2, but not the original:

We were trying to find hedgehog and squirrel stepping stones today for the garden. I had found squirrel ones around 1 3/4s drive away reduced but they said they didn't have hedgehog ones. DH drove to pick them up and looked at their other ones and under a bird one he found some hedgehog ones so we have hedgehog ones as well and enough for the path.

I also meanwhile was phoning round garden centres and found another one which could deliver but they were full price plus delivery so very pleased we found these. We have a squirrel or possibly two who live in the garden and we from time to time get a visiting hedgehog.

Also had a sunday roast and 2 jam doughnuts. DD messaged me from university saying she needed to get hold of DH urgently and it was time critical but didn't say what initially just he needs to call me now. I explained he wasn't here then she said I need an answer by 8pm. Then its how do I make broccoli and blue cheese pasta. 😂I had been a bit worried what was urgent. DD has now made the pasta.

Its a shame its too cold to garden @MissConductUS though love your snowy scenes. We had snow once but that's it so far. We've managed gardening 3 times this month so far but its tricky due to the short days (about 5pm is dusk) so that restricts to weekends and then you need no rain which is about 3 or 4 out of 7 days so normally can do one day each weekend. It is a bit cold around 7C but if you keep moving its fine and nice to be outside. It is rather muddy though now DS has been walking round the grass lawn for hours each day its gone to mud in places. That's why we are making more paths. I hope your recovery is going well.

I love the idea of hedgehog and squirrel stepping stones. I might let my landscaper know.

One side of our recliner sofa mechanism has snapped. I emailed the company and they're saying it's out of warranty. I'm saying I have s9 and 10 of the Consumer Rights aact 2015 on my side. They want more pics.

So we had to tip the sofa to take pictures. Will send tomorrow with a stronger note about my statutory rights. The sofa is only 4.5 years old and should be suitable as a recliner for another 3.5 years at least.

MrsSPenguins · 26/01/2026 00:51

These are the stepping stones, they are by Kelkay and there's a squirrel one, a hedgehog one, a bird one and a rabbit one. We just got squirrel and hedgehog. They were quite hard to get hold of. I was ringing garden centres all over. The bird and rabbit are easier to get hold of. Hedgehog is the hardest. We have all we need now but hope they managed the car journey fine. They are only 30cms though. For our heavier use paths we have bigger stones.

Hope baby is doing OK, havoc.

We had more snow than I thought we'd have today, so I'll have to clear it off the car tomorrow before i head off to work. The polar air has passed to the east but it's still very cold, well below freezing. Hope you're doing OK, MissC, and that there won't be any interruptions to your power. I hear a foot of snow is expected in parts of New England.

On my way to church this morning, I discovered my dashboard has a little light that pops on when I'm skidding, as I did a little fishtailing on a left turn. No ploughing was done overnight so the streets were very icy. I spent the rest of the day getting chores done and watching football. A local kid plays on one of the winning teams, both of which will be going to the superbowl. The ploughs have been rumbling up and down the street outside all afternoon since the snow stopped, and many neighbours have been out shoveling sidewalks or snow blowing. No doubt the local sledding hills got plenty of action.

Penguins, your stepping stones remind me of old, pre-decimal and even pre-Euro Irish money, and also the books of Beatrix Potter. They're lovely.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/01/2026 03:30

Got out late - around 3pm - but had the nicest afternoon out with dc. 😊 First stop was a bakery on Main for a slice of cake to share (tuxedo) and package of choc chop cookies to take home. Next was the playground in Burkeville which is down the road from Flight Path Park in Richmond. Despite it being only 3c we stayed out for a good hour, or so. I had the kids dressed in their snowsuits and gloves, so they were fine.
Have got salmon with pesto and cauliflower and asparagus with Chinese 5 spice on s sheet-pan in the oven and a pot of brown and wild rice on the stove. Laundry is on as well, so things are humming along here this evening.
Plugged in the landline as my mum's mobile bit it and she needs a phone in the meantime for emergencies.

Loving the cafe, art and garden news. 🩷🥰

They are adorable. And the correct colour!

I was made redundant at the end of last October, then found a Christmas job that lasted for a couple of months, since then I’ve been chasing after roles that come to nothing…well that’s enough of the negative stuff…I’ve applied for a voluntary role in the town where I live, I have an interview on Friday, although given my recent luck I’ll probably get turned down for that too 😆

MissConductUS · 26/01/2026 11:56

Penguins, those stepping stones are adorable. Too bad that your DH had to drive so far to get them. When we had the boxwood bushes planted last year, I put in some decorative brass stepping stones. I can't take a picture because they're under 14 inches of snow at the moment.

Math, we're doing okay. There hasn't been any icing in my region that would bring down the power lines; it's been all snow. Further south, they've had sleet and freezing rain. We had to clear the driveway and deck once around noon and again around 5:00 PM before dinner. The picture below shows what the house looked like at that point, with about a foot of snow.

It's 7:00 AM here and the snow seems to have stopped. We'll have to clear the snow that fell overnight later this morning. I wish we had the bigger snowblower we ordered, but it is what it is.

Welcome, @Lilywisp, and thanks for sharing your news. It's horrible being between jobs and having to look for a new one. Are you receiving benefits to tide you over?

Here's how it looks outside this morning. The rock wall is barely visible. The town has our road clear, so well done to them.

I had some eyelash extensions for the first time aged 50, and now I look like a drag queen.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/01/2026 16:33

Lily, that sounds frustrating. 💐 what sector are you in? Do you think you might need to retrain a bit and look for a different role?
Miss, you are definitely getting your share of winter on your side of the continent! 🥶
it doesn't take much here to bring down lines as our snow is very heavy when we get it. It also means lots of ice and icy roads happen fast. So far we've only had a dusting and that was a couple of weeks ago.

Keeping on the weather topic, it's -1c here. No school today, so it will be a bit of a lazy morning.

I'm limping at the moment. Got on a bus this afternoon, and somehow my foot slipped. I came down hard on the knee I had replaced in 2011. Luckily, it only seems to be bruised and a bit puffy; but it's quite painful to walk. And of course, when I got home my dog jumped up to say hello.😬

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/01/2026 17:40

Oh, no @sueelleker ! That's sounds painful. Get an ice pack on it and take some ibuprofen?

Just watching the news out of Toronto - 56cm of snow there. 😲

Also, need to vent that I'm hating my breakfast, but forcing it down. I made oatmeal. It's rolled oats, though, and I prefer steel cut oats. I feel like I'm eating glop. 😥

That made me laugh. I tried them years ago, cheap ones from Woolworths. I put my glasses back on when I finished, then I blinked and couldn’t open my eyes, the lashes were like blinds! Also there was a thick line of white glue and the lashes were just above my own. First and last time I tried them and they cost me 5 shillings (pre decimal) 😂

DandyDandylion · 26/01/2026 20:00

I admit to being a bit of a hoarder on the quiet Maths. I had one holiday in Ireland pre Euro and loved these coins so much I have kept them. Thank you for reminding me of a lovely holiday BC (before children).

Had not heard of a tuxedo cake Havoc but having googled it my mouth is now watering. Glad you have your dm there to help out with childcare when needed.

Good luck with the job hunt Lily, I have always enjoyed volunteering when I’ve had the time. A prospective employer will be pleased to see you are keeping busy and giving back.

Don’t want to worry to MissC but I once had a power line come down due to snow over my field. I walked up to check the ponies and my lad came running towards me and got caught up in the cable. He definitely used up one of his lives that day. Beautiful snow pictures.

As Havoc says, Sue ice pack and oral ibuprofen but I have been told I can also apply a small amount of 10% ibuprofen gel pretty regularly on the day of injury. It seems to really help get the ibuprofen directly where it is needed. Hope it feels better soon.

Just watching the news and can’t believe the hikers who were rescued off Scarfell Pike and then left without paying their heavily discounted hotel bill.

I'm in a similar boat having had.to.leave my job in September 2024. Then had an ankle fusion in the summer which led to a horrible infection and three weeks in hospital. I've only just finished three months of antibodies, so I'm looking for work again.

The job market has been dire for over a year, so I hope it picks up for you; Lily.

DandyDandylion · 27/01/2026 07:59

Sorry for the nosy question Lily but what line of work are you in?

DH is doing the school run this morning as he needed to pop to the shops, so I am waiting for it to get light to go to the field and do my ponies.

MissConductUS · 27/01/2026 09:49

I'm up very early, as my post op insomnia is still plaguing me. Myrtle, we have a lot of walking wounded on this thread.

Dandy, we've had power line issues here, too. In 2023, some wires came down due to a tree falling on them, and it caused the transformer on the pole (which is filled with oil of some type) to catch fire. See pictures below. In addition to losing power, we also lost internet connectivity. Fortunately, both were restored the same day.

We had to do a third and final clearing of the driveway yesterday. Picture below of how the top half of the driveway looked at the end of Snowmageddon. If you look closely, you'll see our little Honda snowblower in front of the garage. It's very reliable, easy to start and powerful for its size, but it really can't handle snow more than eight inches or so. It's also only 18" wide, so it requires a lot of passes to clear our very large driveway. We got 14" of snow from this storm.

And there's another snowstorm in the forecast for next weekend, God help us. I doubt we'll have the new, larger snowblower by then. I don't know where we're going to put all of the snow if we get another big storm. Temps aren't forecast to rise over -5 C all week, and that's the high temperature each day, so we're not going to have any melting.

Hope everyone who is injured recovers soon. DS hurt his fingers playing rugby on Saturday so had to sit out of Sunday’s game and a trip to minor injury unit but nothing broken so is hoping to get back to it soon.
Love the snow pictures but I’m glad we don’t generally have weather like that. We don’t cope well with snow in the uk!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/01/2026 16:12

Morning everyone. 😊
It's cloudy here and temo has gone up to 3c. Rain is in the forecast to begin tonight.

I didn't get much sleep last night. I ended up down to rabbit hole of MN. Anyway, was awake early this morning with the kids, tried to convince them it was still night time to no avail, so finally got us all up for breakfast. Managed to watch a bit of a talk show and drink a latte. I'm on coffee #2. Will be getting us all ready to head out to school soon.

Thanks @mathanxiety They remind me of Beatrix potter too - I love Peter rabbit and DS still uses his handmade Beatrix Potter quilt from primary. Hope the snow is manageable.

Love the snow pictures @MissConductUS but hope its not too difficult.

Hope you can get some rest @Mumtobabyhavoc

Hope your DS recovers quickly @sproutsandparsnips

Hope you can get a job soon @MyrtleLion and @Lilywisp

Its quite wet and windy here today but tomorrow is a nice day for a British January, dry, sunny and 9C so DH is taking the afternoon off and we will start laying the hedgehog and squirrel path. Just watched Below Deck.

DandyDandylion · 27/01/2026 18:04

Wow hope you’re keeping warm in all that snow and negative temperatures MissC.

After all this talk of power lines there was a power cut today which affected us and neighbours as far as 20 miles away. It seemed to be in a line towards our nearest sub station. Our supplier said it was a line taken out by branches and it was only off for a couple of hours.
It rained heavily all night and most of the morning so I spent the day doing housework. I only intended to vacuum the hall but ended up sorting through all the coats, gloves, shoes etc that have accumulated by the front door. It took forever but looks much better now.

D-oh! Just remembered birthday gift needed for this weekend! Ordered off Amazon. 😅Should arrive on Thursday. 🤞
Had dc to school today, home for lunch/nap and then to Science World for a couple hours.
Havoc had a bit of a challenging moment at school when another dc took a toy causing Havoc to 😭. Long convo where I explained it was a conflict and Havoc needed to find a compromise. (It was what I came up with in the moment...🫣). Anyway, later in the day at Science World Havoc pops head out of the tree house to tell me a compromise had been made inside with another kid. 😁🩷🥹
My job is done, right? 😅
