Food that doesn't taste the same as it used to

Ritz crackers.
What in the name of feck did they do to them?
Where are those crispy, crunchy, salty circles of deliciousness?
Instead we have slightly off, stale tasting discs of disappointment.

I know from others that McVitie's Chocolate Digestives are also on the gone downhill list.
Anything else?

I didn’t have one decent strawberry this year, all mushy and completely tasteless.

Thewolffromthedoor89 · 26/11/2025 03:01

I think HP sauce tastes different; more vinegary?

Nat6999 · 26/11/2025 03:04

Cadburys chocolate, since they started using palm oil, I've had to swap to Milky Bar.

Lucozade, I could kill Jamie Oliver.

Another vote for tomatoes. So disappointing. I substitute tinned tomatoes now in recipes that call for fresh.

Rather depressingly I’ve learned that most tinned tomatoes are grown in China and only canned in Italy.

I have. I used to buy Sainsbo it was lovely. Then it took on the emulsion consistency. So then l bought Sainsbo organic and it was great. And now it’s joined the emulsion gang.

So now I’m looking for foil covered soft cheese. They can’t add more water to that,

Honestly the stuff I’ve been buying could be painted on. I went through a phase of trying to drain off the extra water. Then just cba.

Aww, bugger... yes, that wetness that makes it turn mouldy... 😔

EleanorReally · 26/11/2025 06:16

i prefer to roast my cherry tomatoes, much more flavour

The cheese ones are still ok but the original version are indeed stale and off tasting. I thought I’d bought a dodgy box but apparently that’s just how they taste now. Presume they have reduced the salt?

therewasafishinthepercolator · 26/11/2025 07:06

Agree with tomatoes. The best I can find that have some flavour are Tesco Finest Sugarbelles.

Not amazing but best I can find. Only ones I'd buy now.

Lidls have a cherry on the vine variety - Piccolino? They taste like proper tomatoes, or did. Even Waitrose can’t seem to produce a normal sized tomato with flavour.

I've no idea how Heinz are still in business beyond folk memories of the good times. Everything they make now tastes awful, worse than value brands did ten years ago, but they charge a fortune for it.

Sweetiedarling7 · 26/11/2025 10:59

There are no nice tasting cakes or biscuits anymore except perhaps from local independent bakers. I have given up and make my own. All the mainstream shop bought stuff is, to quote Prue Leith, not worth the calories.

Vesta chow mein- no big chunks of soya beef, thinner more watery sauce
Mcvities digestives- claggy and powdery
Advocaat- thick and jelly like now instead of creamy
Caramac- waxy and horrible
M&S chocolate round biscuits- no longer made by Foxes, now cheap
Sweets- opal fruits, fruit pastels, jelly tots, etc. All drab and not as nice due to lack of artificial colours and flavours

Yes! What they have done to Caramac and jelly tots is a national disgrace! 😡

So basically....
Take the salt and sugar out of everything and it tastes terrible 🤔

We need that milk back into chocolate.

Tesco were doing a deal on 10 tins of Heinz soup. I thought they'd be handy to have with lunch occasionally. They tasted bloody awful.

And the lovely saturated fats, don’t forget those!

Pointynoseowner · 26/11/2025 13:38

Quality street, disgusting

Pringles.
Used to be so moreish, no I can easily say no.

I just noticed this the other day! I hardly ever buy them but went on a road trip and thought I was getting Covid bc they tasted like brown envelopes. Never again!

Everything probably just needs some lard.
Just add lard....to everything 😂😂

If i don't make soup ,Baxters can be ok .
Pea and ham
Lentil .
Some of the others are gey salty.

Goatblu · 26/11/2025 13:47

Twiglets. These new fangled baked ones are horrible.

schnubbins · 26/11/2025 13:50

Cadburys and Milka chocolate has been absolutelyy ruined .Cocoa solids now only 20 percent and palm oil has replaced the milk in the so called 'milk ' chocolate. All thanks to Mondelez International who took over both companies .It is all just horrible greasy gunk now and we should boycott them.
Fruit tastes like nothing anymore so I hardly eat it .I eat a lot of vegetable instead mostly organic.

BigJanette · 26/11/2025 18:01

Thanks everyone for confirming my suspicions that there is a conspiracy to take away any form of flavour in all the food we used to love!
The cheek of it is that the prices have escalated, when the quality has gone downhill.
I am going to try the aldi or was it lidl version of the ritz crackers as mentioned by a PP - thank you.

Bird's Eye chicken pies. How I loved them as a child. Now even my cat won't eat the grey blobs that masquerade as "chicken"
