Food that doesn't taste the same as it used to

Ritz crackers.
What in the name of feck did they do to them?
Where are those crispy, crunchy, salty circles of deliciousness?
Instead we have slightly off, stale tasting discs of disappointment.

I know from others that McVitie's Chocolate Digestives are also on the gone downhill list.
Anything else?

Plain Pringles, I used to be able to scoff loads now they are just about eatable if starving

x2boys · 26/11/2025 18:20

When I was a child and we went abroad on holiday I always enjoyed a lemon ( limon) Fanta ,it was lovely and you couldn't get it in England
I was delighted when I saw them being sold in the UK but its revolting far too sweet and Slimey.

It’ll be the palm oil. It nearly always is 🙁

Less sugar, less salt in food (because they care) and add palm oil because that’s so healthy.

I bought some fancy Waitrose Belgian biscuits. They weren’t cheap but I was most disappointed. Should have checked the ingredients- no butter whatsoever just bl**dy palm oil!!!

I bought some shortbread in Waitrose last Xmas. Absolutely foul! Checked ingredients- all rapeseed oil instead of butter. I mean why? In fairness, they weren't Waitrose brand but why bother stocking them?

Chiangmymy · 26/11/2025 19:35

Re the comments about bread. If you can afford it get a breadmaker and make your own bread (or get a used one). So much better and tastier than shop bought. It takes about 2 mins to throw all the ingredients in and switch on. And works out a lot cheaper than buying.

breezyyy · 26/11/2025 19:41

Grime the WWF about palm oil.

  1. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH PALM OIL?
Palm oil has been and continues to be a major driver of deforestation of some of the world’s most biodiverse forests, destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino. This forest loss coupled with conversion of carbon rich peat soils are throwing out millions of tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. There also remains some exploitation of workers and child labour. These are serious issues that the whole palm oil sector needs to step up to address because it doesn’t have to be this way.

Chocolate. It doesn’t taste of anything now and the texture is weird. Doesn’t stop me from eating it though!

Nutella. I had bonne maman chocolate and hazelnut spread recently and that tastes like the Nutella of my childhood.

Yeah - Nutella is really slimy nowadays.

@Terrribletwos I completely agree about bread. Tastes of dust and wind. For a while I bought the more expensive bakery section loaves but now they are £4 for something the size of a bread roll so I've given up.

It's part of the enshittification of everything.

I can’t eat bread anymore and just manage to eat pittas for sandwiches, I even toast them. There’s something to do with gluten, so many people can’t tolerate it and I think I’m one of them.

Twiglets. These new fangled baked ones are horrible.

They’re so wrong it’s devastating

Quality street, disgusting

This year will be my first ever Christmas without a tin of Quality Street - I’ve loved them since I was a child, but I’ve had to accept reality: they are now horrid. The good times are over!

SeaAndStars · 26/11/2025 19:46

Inspired by this thread I've just ordered a bread maker.

Generally speaking when you get a "new recipe" advertised on a product it's invariably worse.

Often repackaged with an increase in cost,

IAmKerplunk · 26/11/2025 19:49

Discos and squares (the crisps)

Used to love the crunch - now they just taste stale

Potatoes. They all just taste of nothing now, or they're earthy and bitter.

The other thing I've noticed recently is that full fat milk isn't creamy any more and seems hardly any different from semi-skimmed.

The supermarket ones went bad really quickly and the ones I managed to use turned grey in the pan. So I bought Albert Bartlett ones, even worse! They weren’t going off, but they did soften when boiled, so disappointing.

All Kellogg's cereals
PG Tips
Cadbury chocolate
Walls ice cream
Tango, Fanta, 7up,- all the pop that now has sweeteners instead of just sugar.
McDonald's chicken sandwich
Salad Nicoise from Pizza Express. Actually everything from Pizza Express.
Mr whippy ice cream from the van
KFC
Walkers crisps
All fresh fruit and veg from a supermarket

breezyyy · 26/11/2025 19:53

Im finding they go mouldy really quickly. I chuck out at least one per pack.

I guess they were fresh before they started their long air flight. That’s the same for all fruit and veg.

I used to eat Crunchy Nut Cornflakes as a student. Loads of big cornflakes and nuts.

Now they are tiny bits of paper and grit.

LightDrizzle · 26/11/2025 19:55

Hellmans Mayonnaise!

Needlesnah · 26/11/2025 19:56

LilacPony · 25/11/2025 22:36

Custard. I don’t know why, but whenever I have it every time I just think it’s nothing like it was in the 90s!

Most of the supermarket brands have stopped using any kind of egg in custard now - even powdered! It’s just powdered dairy, odd fats and colouring.

FluffAndBrush · 26/11/2025 00:58

I suspect our soil is more nutritious thue gives more flavour and imported fruit and beg is bland as the soil has nothing in it.

Yes nd it’s half dead before we get to buy it.

Sweetiedarling7 · 26/11/2025 19:57

For those who find all bread yukky (I mostly agree) try Wildfarmed if you don’t want to/ can’t make your own. It’s very tasty.

Sorry didn’t soften.
