Food that doesn't taste the same as it used to

Ritz crackers.
What in the name of feck did they do to them?
Where are those crispy, crunchy, salty circles of deliciousness?
Instead we have slightly off, stale tasting discs of disappointment.

I know from others that McVitie's Chocolate Digestives are also on the gone downhill list.
Anything else?

Baked beans all taste really watery and bland lately. Almost a bit saccharine ified

I always add butter and salt and pepper

I remember a really tasty corn chowder by Covent Garden.

I made it a few days ago from a recipe I found on here, it tastes the same as in 2000 (and was surprisingly easy to make)

Pot noodles, particularly the chicken and mushroom used to be delicious years ago, now they are absolutely disgusting to me

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 26/11/2025 20:14

I used to eat Crunchy Nut Cornflakes as a student. Loads of big cornflakes and nuts.

Now they are tiny bits of paper and grit.

Yep. They're awful now! Worse than the own branded ones from the 90s?! They all taste stale and old now as well. And they're so expensive considering it's just one grade above cardboard!

TheCorrsDidDreamsBetter · 26/11/2025 20:18

The sausages in Heinz beans or spaghetti with sausages.

Why did they swap the lovely sausages for those horrible reconstituted cardboard Richmond sausages? It's like they don't want to make money any more.

Pringles. Weird the ones from this week

I noticed that this week too.

Maynards wine gums. I buy own brand ones now which are much nicer

Chicken breasts from supermarkets are often chewy & tough. Never used to be.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 26/11/2025 20:28

The quality of food, the lack of fresh produce counters, deli and bakery in most supermarkets now just makes me feel like everything is packaged, mass produced and tastes of cardboard. Rows and rows of pre packaged ultra processed nonsense, even the stuff marketed as ‘healthy’ is worse than anything. I think the nutritional value of most of what we eat is nothing like what we ate growing up.

Ohpleeeease · 26/11/2025 20:29

Whenever I travel abroad I realise how short changed we are in the UK. It’s still possible to get great fruit and veg from street markets in Europe. Even the supermarket stuff is better.

Oh do please share! It's the right time of year for a chowder!

Thewolffromthedoor89 · 26/11/2025 20:50

Yes we have been failed by our MPs and successive governments and the legislature who haven’t curbed the greed of supermarkets and have basically kiboshed our farmers. And they have failed to impose limits on the sale of highly processed foods.

They have allowed market forces to prevail over what is good for the consumer.

Everyone rants on about EU red tape but this is literally what it is for; to protect food quality, limit nasty additives and pesticides, curb the amount of pollution washed in to rivers, maintain the quality of chocolate, oversee the condition in which chickens are kept, guard safety standards relating to how animals in the food chain are exported and transported.

Strange you should mention cucumber, I enjoyed it for years and I can no longer eat it due to getting terrible chest pains.

I would pay extra for 1990s Cadbury and Ribena.

Get the Irish Cadburys bars (in the supermarket Irish section).
Rocks blackcurrant cordial only has sugar, no sweeteners.

EYP2021 · 26/11/2025 21:11

Snack chocolate biscuits they are absolutely revolting now. They were so bad I had to check the expiry date.

For me, severe pain on eating cucumber is the first sign that my stomach is emptying too slowly again. Just in case that leads you anywhere

Calliopespa · 26/11/2025 21:18

Thank you!

ilovecardigans · 26/11/2025 21:26

Not quite the same as Ritz crackers, but Milton's original multi-grain crackers (Canadian brand) are really good. Just the right amount of salt and NO bastard palm oil.

Also, Morrisons 'The Best' chocolate is fantastic. No palm oil in that either. The salted butterscotch bar is amazing - like a luxury Dime bar with a sprinkle of salty loveliness.

I seem to spend half my time in shops checking labels for palm oil & artificial sweetener. If a product contains either, it doesn't go on my basket.

Funnily I’ve recently started wanting to add salt to my McDonald’s fries and I’ve never done that before, I did wonder if it was just me craving salt or if they had cut back

McDonalds fries have been going downhill for a while. First they made them thinner then they cut down the salt. The kids had some the other day and we agreed they are like those awful microwavable Fries to Go now. Tasteless with the texture of cardboard. The burgers are all tasteless now too. The only way they can make money is through these 6 weekly menu changes they do nowadays that are all over social media. I used to love a McDs but I won't touch it now.
