I watched it on the laptop.

My concert went well. A bit emotional with my dad’s medals on the stand. Watched the Cenotaph this morning and still watching the march past though should get on with the day really.
The remaining WW2 veterans are incredible.

Edited

Glad the concert went well. You must feel so proud of your dad Flowers

Dh went to our local cenotaph this morning which, as usual was well attended. DS1 went to the cenotaph in the town he works in and ds2 and I watched my df march passed in London. My dsis and her dh had gone along to London to support him in the crowd.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 09/11/2025 13:11

I read the names at our Remembrance Sunday service this morning. Always strikes me when doing it the number of people who died from the same families - some surnames appearing in both WW1 & WW2. Church was full (for a change).

BIossomtoes · 09/11/2025 13:28

I thought the same @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats. The same surname appears on our list seven times, it must have been horrific.

cardibach · 09/11/2025 13:33

I worked for a time in an independent school with a strong tradition of military links - OTC in the past, Combined Cadet Force now. They used to read the full list at a Remembrance service every year and it was horrifically long. Almost the whole year group for the 5 years of the Great War and then massive numbers in other conflicts too. And yes, the same surnames repeated. I found it very difficult to listen to.

itsgettingweird · 09/11/2025 13:39

What an honour to read out and honour all those who died for their country.

It must be harrowing to read lists of siblings (mainly brothers) who all died.

I don’t think anyone can really imagine the true horrors of war. It’s so far reaching too.

countrygirl99 · 09/11/2025 13:40

I was on a work party at a local nature reserve this morning. We stopped at 11 for the silence.

The difficult part for me to get through is the epitaph after the names.

When you go home
tell them of us and say,
for your tomorrow
we gave our today.

Wish people would remember that when they demonise 'fighting age men'

There'll be an additional ceremony on Tuesday morning at the local memorial and it's always very sad.

The falling leaves at the cenotaph was very poignant.

War memorials where the dead are listed in alphabetical order tell their own tale.

And of course in WW1 there were mates brigades where whole communities could sign up to be blown to oblivion together. I bet their families wished they could have stayed at home painting roundabouts.

Primary and middle and high school and 6th forms all had plaques to the pupils and staff who were killed in both conflicts.

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2025 14:46

Our local infant school has one of those plaques, the other school buildings are too new.

Which is in itself the greatest memorial to the sacrifices of those people. That we no longer have to commemorate entire generations mown down defending us.

I'd rather we preserved the peace they fought for than adding to the lists of names. And I am sure they would too.

There is a lovely group of volunteers who spruce up the graves of the war dead in this little church yard near me, and put poppies in the trees.

Catching up slowly - sympathy and all good wishes to those who are managing difficulties with health/family health 💕

There's a secret graveyard a few minutes walk from me (the church is long gone and it's not visible from the pavement). There are a few family graves there with dates between 1914 and 1918 of brothers, or fathers and sons.

(My DM was always a bit sniffy about my DGMs love of scouring graveyards over the country, but she lost her brother in the Great War ... maybe it was her way ?)

MsJinks · 09/11/2025 15:11

Have my small granddaughter so no real silence here! But the marches are so moving indeed - the one I saw in person last was from Edinburgh castle to Holyrood and the vets bringing up the rear, then standing on parade for the ceremony were very moving. It was an invite to my Dad’s old regiment thing, as they couldn’t attend his covid funeral - as he only did National Service and left in 1951 I was very moved as well by them still keeping him (and treating us) as part of the Scots Guards family.
I’m not sure I could read names of the fallen out well - well done those who have done this, and listened. I heard names played at Auschwitz this week as you enter - there are no actual words. It’s all about witnessing and remembering I think though- all sobering.

InMySpareTime · 09/11/2025 16:39

We saw a load of bikers on the M60 wearing red jackets and trailing remembrance flags. It was actually quite moving seeing hundreds of bikers united for one cause like that.

Saucery · 09/11/2025 16:45

Very moving and respectful service at the local cenotaph this afternoon, despite the horrible weather. I think they stagger the services round here due to layout of the roads (and one main road closed for works at the moment, making it tricky to avoid both ‘villages’ on either side of me). Poppies lining the streets, making the flags look silly.
We will have a service in school on Tuesday. I am always impressed by the seriousness which 4-11yr olds show every year, and a fair proportion of them will have been out today with Scouts and Guides too.

cardibach · 09/11/2025 16:59

Supplementary cat tax. I’m going through the video of last night’s concert and Perdy cat is fascinated. Been sitting watching it for ages.

Sending love to all those with health conditions.

I was at the local remembrance service this morning. I do find the silence incredibly moving -particularly as the memorial is near a very busy junction. (the police stops the traffic. ) It's very rare we have an idiot beeping their horn. I also love the service as they alternate the speaker. They had a humanist one year. CofE Vicar this year.

Wish people that have use remembrance as a Union Jack flag flying excuse would remember all the non Brits who lost their lives for our freedom.

I live in a naval area and it’s still heavily populated by people from British territories and commonwealth countries.

They fight for Britain whatever their skin colour and sadly some die whatever their skin colour too.

The lack of respect is outrageous.

Bikers are well known around here for their community acts. They will attend funerals for families too.

Another group often misjudged and mis represented.
