Commonly Seen spelling errors/word swaps that you're itching to correct?

Prefaced by the fact i'm in pain, in the aftermath of a migraine (still have a headache) and have the tolerance of dewdrop for anything today...

I was reading on social media this morning, and i noticed that there seems to be some common word swaps going on recently that i'm seeing more and more regularly.

I'm aware that some people are dyslexic, or may have only heard a word and not seen it written, or english is second language..etc, but then you feel (and look) like a twat if you correct it on the off chance one of those things is the issue.

aloud, instead of allowed
the usual there/they're/their error
towed (the line), instead of toed,
reef instead of wreath
pacific instead of specific

Any others you've noticed.. and do you just ignore or correct?

‘Off’ and ‘of’ - how hard can it be?! They sound completely different. How can they think ‘ff’ makes the ‘v’ sound?

butterpuffed · 06/11/2025 10:04

There's a place in here called Pedants' Corner which is for stuff like this .

fairislecable · 06/11/2025 10:04

The vehicle had faulty “breaks” instead of “brakes” this was on a local police report for a traffic accident!

The worst ones on MN?
Loose when they mean lose.
"I'm trying to loose weight" aaaaargh!
Also, "could of, would of, should of"
Plurals with apostrophes eg hoody's etc.
Also ect instead of etc.

Rest bite instead of respite

This one has been on here a loooong time, it always makes me smile 😊. I always hope the person gets the respite they need. However, it's not acceptable from a professional.

LeafyMcLeafFace · 06/11/2025 10:08

Not written usually, but people who say less when they mean fewer. 😡😡😡

I do control myself because I’m not an idiot and I know that for most people they wouldn’t even know, but I do have to take a deep breath.

CreativeAccounting · 06/11/2025 10:08

I often notice “loose” and “lose” being used incorrectly. Also, to my friend who posts rants frequently on Facebook, it’s “disgusting”, not “discusting”.

TeenLifeMum · 06/11/2025 10:08

I have a lovely friend and I can’t correct her without upsetting her but every time she writes a message with the word said spelled “sed” I think my face contorts. She seems to write it a lot too 🙈 I can’t decide if she knows and it’s just her shorthand in text, or if she thinks that’s the spelling.

Someone using the wrong your/their doesn’t annoy me but I do judge the education level of the person.

Yes, plus “over” instead of more than. I’ve accepted I’ve lost that battle and language has evolved… I still can’t write it (ex newspaper sub editor).

Rest bite… is that when you sit and bite into a doughnut?

Is it wise to be in your screen?

their/there/they're etc - my phone is a twat for changing what I've written. It's an iphone15, so it should really be better 'educated' it's a sneaky little shit & changes loads of stuff🙇🏻‍♀️. It make me look illiterate. The posts look fine until I hit send. If someone quotes my post & I read it again I'm often cringing. I did try to preview my posts, but they seemed fine?

so I try to give people benefit of the doubt.

however, someone trying to have a go at me the other day didn't exactly help herself by writing 'we was' 🙄

as for MN refusing to sort out this lack of capital letters at the start of a paragraph🤬

Rest bite instead of respite

I'd come to post these. I've seen social workers use "rest bite" when writing up care needs. For god's sake, how does rest bite even make any sense?

It's also OK to discuss it elsewhere. It's not that strict.

Probably not, but I'm also in too much pain to do anything other than sit on my butt and be online at the moment, I'm bored of playing games. So it's keeping my brain occupied alongside listening to Vern on BBC Radio 2 while i wait for my rattle of meds to kick in.. then i might take a morning nap.

And yes.. the lack of capitalisation on MN drives me mad.

Chester Draws & Rest Bite also annoy me. I come across Rest bite quite a bit on the local disabled parenting groups.

Rest bite is definitely the biscuit i'm eating with my coffee this morning!
