Commonly Seen spelling errors/word swaps that you're itching to correct?

Prefaced by the fact i'm in pain, in the aftermath of a migraine (still have a headache) and have the tolerance of dewdrop for anything today...

I was reading on social media this morning, and i noticed that there seems to be some common word swaps going on recently that i'm seeing more and more regularly.

I'm aware that some people are dyslexic, or may have only heard a word and not seen it written, or english is second language..etc, but then you feel (and look) like a twat if you correct it on the off chance one of those things is the issue.

aloud, instead of allowed
the usual there/they're/their error
towed (the line), instead of toed,
reef instead of wreath
pacific instead of specific

Any others you've noticed.. and do you just ignore or correct?

“We was…”
Urgh. Go back to school.

I think that's where my friend picked it up! Probably as much from the teachers as the other pupils 🙄🙄

Newsenmum · 06/11/2025 22:37

affect/effect

Newsenmum · 06/11/2025 22:39

I find “went tescos” or “went costas” extremely irritating.

You went to Tesco or Costa. No ssssssss on the end either!

On MN the most frequent has to be advice/advise. Do people not hear the "ice” sound in the noun? It’s so different from the zzzzz sound in the verb.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/11/2025 22:41

Wander/wonder

You are all welcome to correct me on effect/affect. Many of you have tried to explain it, it's just not sticking.

To be fair phones have a lot to answer for- my iPhone’s predictive text can be deplorable and there’s times it changes the word the second I’ve stopped typing and I don’t notice!

Is it an iphone15 too? My 15 is the worst one I've ever had for it. Drives me mad! If someone quotes my post & I end up reading it I'm invariably cringing 🤬

slx · 06/11/2025 22:46

Someone wrote “suttle” instead of “subtle” in a work email yesterday - couldn’t believe my eyes!

CeliaCanth · 06/11/2025 22:46

Lead instead of led
brought instead of bought
women instead of (one) woman
Que instead of cue
He’s instead of his (there was an absolute howler about this a few days ago, involving hoodies)
Free reign instead of free rein
Defiantly instead of definitely
Phased instead of fazed
CAHMS instead of CAMHS
Sandles instead of sandals - especially if they have “heals”
Excersize instead of exercise
people “loosing” weight

I've had a few predictive text disasters over the years. The most memorable was in the competitors' manual for a children's sporting event I was running. I had intended to write the following advice for parents re lost children. "If you become separated from your child/ren please report to Sign On immediately". For some reason, my laptop autocorrected "Sign On" to "Dignitas". It's true that some of the parents can be a bit annoying but I felt this was a little extreme!
I don't use speech to text but I probably wouldn't have much joy given how frequently my car misunderstands me. Possibly the best ever was when I asked "Navigate to Tebay Services". After some delay I got a reply along the lines of "Your journey is 4450 miles and includes 23 charging stops." Given I was in Liverpool at the time this was something of a surprise. I then looked at the screen to see a route to Tibet.
Technology, you've got to love it!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

SemperIdem · 06/11/2025 22:50

Quiet when they mean quite.

People, specifically those under the age of 25, don’t seem to know how to use cue/queue correctly.

SemperIdem · 06/11/2025 22:52

Also - ballballs/bawballs instead of baubles. We’re at the point of the year when those start appearing in social media posts.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/11/2025 22:54

SparrowFeet · 06/11/2025 11:24

Hang on - don't you 'tow' a line? I never knew it was toe a line..

<preens>

I knew this!

But only because we have had threads like this before

Blush I read these threads to learn.

AutumnCosy2025 · 06/11/2025 22:57

I don't really use any SM. But I do have the Nextdoor app. If we included the absolute howlers from there we'd never stop laughing. 🤣🤣🤣

LongRecord · 06/11/2025 22:58

I have a couple of family members who, in FB posts write ‘use’ for ‘you’ as a plural.

I suppose it replaces ‘you two’ - ‘use ( you two or more) make me laugh’.

When people use "bare with me" when it's actually "bear with me".

Maybe they want to get bare with them. (That's the only way I can work it out thanks to a previous pedants' corner thread)

I can't do:
I can't bear/bare it. Is it the same as bear with me?

Just get a mental block.

I can do lose/loose but it requires effort.

Lost/lose (one o)

Goosy Loosy (which I can't spell confidently) from the story where the sky is falling in

As previously stated, I have yet to master effect/affect.

the only time to use 'bare' is when thinking of something being naked. bare nakes ladies, or bare cheeks. bare yourself to the world.

'bear' in 'bear with me' is asking them to bear the wait (or bear the weight which is what i learned to help remember the difference) it isn't a fluffy bear, but carrying/holding the wait in time.

I had one confirming we need more rigger in the process. And then there’s all the ones emphasising how badly a thing is effecting them, or pointing out that something is a mute point. Shocking.

If someone says less when it should be fewer I have to bite my tongue, similarly I was sat.

Though having been a teacher and having had to proof read other teachers reports, I shouldn’t be surprised. Some were littered with spelling and grammar mistakes and were poorly worded.

Electricsausages · 07/11/2025 07:01

Loose for lose
completely different meanings

whattheysay · 07/11/2025 07:32

Using I instead of me, for example ’this is a gift from my husband and I’

TheFunSponge · 07/11/2025 07:43

Been when the writer means being. Abit, aswell, incase. Lovley for lovely. I done it and was you. Myself instead of me.

Tabitha500 · 07/11/2025 07:49

Using ‘your’ instead of ‘you’re’

your house, cat, dog
you’re (you are) going to the shops

not - your driving a car, your washing the dishes, it’s you’re!

Abra1t · 07/11/2025 07:52

Have we had defiantly for definitely yet?

I once saw someone commenting on a Facebook friends, son, looking very swarve.

Been when it should be being.
