Commonly Seen spelling errors/word swaps that you're itching to correct?

Prefaced by the fact i'm in pain, in the aftermath of a migraine (still have a headache) and have the tolerance of dewdrop for anything today...

I was reading on social media this morning, and i noticed that there seems to be some common word swaps going on recently that i'm seeing more and more regularly.

I'm aware that some people are dyslexic, or may have only heard a word and not seen it written, or english is second language..etc, but then you feel (and look) like a twat if you correct it on the off chance one of those things is the issue.

aloud, instead of allowed
the usual there/they're/their error
towed (the line), instead of toed,
reef instead of wreath
pacific instead of specific

Any others you've noticed.. and do you just ignore or correct?

Sight instead of cite (appreciate this is more of an unusual one but I see it more and more).

Fartughtyred · 06/11/2025 12:29

Incorrect usage of effect and affect, for example " His parents divorce effected him badly" or " The special affects in the film were amazing"
Remember, affect is a verb, effect is a noun!

The misuse of was instead of were, for example "You was" or "We was/they was" irritates me beyond all reason. Generally if it sounds clumsy and wrong then it is wrong!

Was and were are the past tense of the verb (to) be. Was is used for first-person singular and third-person singular.
I was taking a walk around the neighborhood.
It was a beautiful day. Were is used for second-person singular and all plural forms:You were late three days in a row.We were worried something was wrong. They were going to give you a few days off to recover.

I know own it's a probably a typo but when people apply for and claim careers allowance rather than carer's allowance .
I see it all the time on special needs forums.

Reign it in, instead of rein.
i wasn’t phased, meaning you werent fazed. This one is very common.
Accept instead of except.
And all the others.

Annie1290 · 06/11/2025 13:00

Generally instead of genuinely. I have to take some deep breaths when I hear that, more and more often.

muddyford · 06/11/2025 13:03

Loose instead of lose.
Saw taught instead of taut this morning.

MiddleAgedDread · 06/11/2025 13:12

There seems to be an increasing trend for using "dose" instead of "does" and "done" instead of "did". "I done" just grates on me 😬

TenWeeCaramelJoeys · 06/11/2025 13:20

My friend (who has a Masters in English) informed me a few weeks ago that that her husband was having prostrate problems.

Chiseltip · 06/11/2025 13:25

It's ben awhile since we had on of these.

I think the mane reason people get upset about it is because there not very good at grammar themselves. Having an education is all we'll and good, but knowing how to have proper grammar is just lost on some people.

QuenchedSquirrel · 06/11/2025 13:26

Not common but I recently saw a posh Christmas event advertised complete with mould wine... yum!

Tryingatleast · 06/11/2025 13:28

To be fair phones have a lot to answer for- my iPhone’s predictive text can be deplorable and there’s times it changes the word the second I’ve stopped typing and I don’t notice!

You don’t think ‘effecting a change’ uses ‘effect’ as a verb then?

rainbowsparkle28 · 06/11/2025 13:31

Could/should/would of - it’s have! (auto correct even tried to change it when I typed!)

Lunaballoon · 06/11/2025 13:34

Loose instead of lose. I see it so often the incorrect spelling seems to have become the default.

Kreepture · 06/11/2025 13:41

SparrowFeet · 06/11/2025 11:24

Hang on - don't you 'tow' a line? I never knew it was toe a line..

its definitely toe, as in standing with your toe on the line, its a military term. Tow is a mis-heard thing.

Should of instead of should have.

The one that irritates me is the use of 'nickname' when a poster means 'diminutive' on the names threads. So for example Flo is the diminutive of Florence and a nickname is different to suit the person e.g. smiler 😀

Yes, yes, yes.
I've been irritated by this for a long time. My son is nicknamed kit-kat by his friends. His name is neither kit nor kat which is why it's a nickname and not a shortening of his name.

I also object to 'recommend me' a good handbag/air fryer or the item needed.
I'm no expert in grammar but recommend me is incorrect.

DressOrSkirt · 06/11/2025 13:44

I make a lot of these mistakes myself so shouldn't really judge but for some reason the one that really gets to me is bought instead of brought.

I also see definitely as definitively a lot but that one makes me giggle.

DressOrSkirt · 06/11/2025 13:46

Oh and also when people say borrow and lend the wrong way around!

My predictive text on my phone can be an ass, so can my speech to text thing.. doesn't like my accent unless i speak RP style, which i hate doing!

He's trousers, He's hoody's 😡

Havingaswimmoose · 06/11/2025 13:51

The one I remember from Mumsnet is pack lunch. Because the lunch is in a back pack and taken to school!
There was an argument about it. Packed lunch is the correct term.

Also mash potato pops up frequently.
The potato has been mashed. Mashed potato.

dailyconniptions · 06/11/2025 10:21

It's also OK to discuss it elsewhere. It's not that strict.

Indeed, but the Pedants tend to be more understanding and less prone to say FFS it doesn't matter if you understand what's been said, or that language evolves, etc.

Havingaswimmoose · 06/11/2025 14:11

Needs washed.
Needs decorated.
Needs cooked.
It should be washing, cooking, decorating.

Plus all other words that should end with 'ing' when following the word needs.

BuffButlerBumfight · 06/11/2025 14:16

@Madamblueshoes Yes! The "nickname" thing drives me insane.

The words "join" and "offered" pop up a lot on MN.

e.g. We are having a dinner party and asked our friends if they wanted to join.

I offered him to come with us.
