Commonly Seen spelling errors/word swaps that you're itching to correct?

Prefaced by the fact i'm in pain, in the aftermath of a migraine (still have a headache) and have the tolerance of dewdrop for anything today...

I was reading on social media this morning, and i noticed that there seems to be some common word swaps going on recently that i'm seeing more and more regularly.

I'm aware that some people are dyslexic, or may have only heard a word and not seen it written, or english is second language..etc, but then you feel (and look) like a twat if you correct it on the off chance one of those things is the issue.

aloud, instead of allowed
the usual there/they're/their error
towed (the line), instead of toed,
reef instead of wreath
pacific instead of specific

Any others you've noticed.. and do you just ignore or correct?

Probably not, but I'm also in too much pain to do anything other than sit on my butt and be online at the moment, I'm bored of playing games. So it's keeping my brain occupied alongside listening to Vern on BBC Radio 2 while i wait for my rattle of meds to kick in.. then i might take a morning nap.

And yes.. the lack of capitalisation on MN drives me mad.

I hope the pain stops soon xx. Definitely a nap! Close your eyes & listen to the radio presenters prattle on!

On Mumsnet I see 'of' being used wrong all the time (would of, could of, should of) and 'was' (we was going out for a meal instead of we were)

I was watching the girl bands documentary (deffo recommend) and I think it was a member of Misteeq (sorry, sp?) who described putting something/one on a 'pedal- stool'. 🤣

I then remembered there was an episode of the IT crowd where Jen mispronounced it like that and Roy ripped the piss out of her...and they all ended up in a courtroom? I forget the whole story but it was funny.

PegDope · 06/11/2025 10:30

Draws instead of drawers
Noone instead of no one (I’d die on this hill)
Recommend me a good cafe - yes I’ll recommend you to the cafe with the great coffee Sharon, anything else?

Periwinkletoes · 06/11/2025 10:30

Invite used as a noun. I would like to invite you to the wedding. I will send you an invitation.

Anonycat · 06/11/2025 10:31

"Asterix" when they mean "asterisk"!

A lot of "loose" when it should be "lose" (but given the spelling of "choose" that’s not really surprising).

Yes! It sounds so babyish to me, not sure why.

goldtrap · 06/11/2025 10:34

If you could have a word with my phone I'd appreciate it 🤣

Mine auto corrects on to UN… because obviously I’m far more likely to be talking about the United Nations than use the word “on” 🙄

Picpac876 · 06/11/2025 10:35

Defiantly instead of definitely! It seems to be used more in indie books where it appears no editing has been done.

PutYourSpecsOnJean · 06/11/2025 10:45

Slither instead of sliver "Another piece of cake?" "Well maybe just a slither" (saw it in a book yesterday)

Distain instead of disdain seems to be gaining traction too

ETA maybe I shouldn't be so quick to judge! - had to edit my post twice for an erroneous extra 's' and a missing 'a'!

AgeingDoc · 06/11/2025 10:52

Independant. I don't know why it irritates me so much but it really grates! Also dependant/dependent used incorrectly. I once worked in a hospital that had a sign over the door of the "High Dependancy Unit" and couldn't believe that it had reached the stage of being put up in public without anyone realising or caring about the error.

Pricelessadvice · 06/11/2025 11:04

“We was…”
Urgh. Go back to school.

Madamblueshoes · 06/11/2025 11:09

The one that irritates me is the use of 'nickname' when a poster means 'diminutive' on the names threads. So for example Flo is the diminutive of Florence and a nickname is different to suit the person e.g. smiler 😀

Abit and alot
Myself instead of I or me

I'd come to post these. I've seen social workers use "rest bite" when writing up care needs. For god's sake, how does rest bite even make any sense?

I used to see this on a forum for carers of people with dementia. The poor things were desperate for a ‘bite’ of rest!

Social workers getting it wrong, though, appalling.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/11/2025 11:18

Phase when they mean faze.

MeouwKing · 06/11/2025 11:19

I saw "there" instead of "their" on here yesterday. In my day, that would have meant lines.

SparrowFeet · 06/11/2025 11:24

Hang on - don't you 'tow' a line? I never knew it was toe a line..

Lavenderandbrown · 06/11/2025 11:26

Mute instead of moot
my 63 y.o co worker an extremely well educated woman says …pacifically all the time. I cannot believe she doesn’t recognize there’s a S at the beginning 🤦🏼‍♀️

Somersetbaker · 06/11/2025 11:34

There,their, they're

smallglassbottle · 06/11/2025 11:49

Wondered around instead of wandered around. Sets my teeth on edge.

Giddykiddy · 06/11/2025 12:01

Mixing up borrowing and lending - -I asked my friend to borrow me £50.
Saying obviously as a sentence filler when the matter is in no way obvious.
Saying pacifically rather than specifically

... and the George Bush special - Nucular instead of Nuclear
