Things that really should have been invented by now

I'm sick of seeing ads for a nice dress on my feed, clicking 'shop now' only to see it's petite (I'm not), or maternity (no again) 😆. I need an ad blocker that only shows me clothes in my size. Is this too much to ask the fashion bots for??

What else needs to be invented?

<secretly hoping this exists and some clever person can tell me>

An electric blanket that cools instead of heats, would be amazing in this heat with menopausal flushes added

If you have lots of £££££, you could buy something similar to what you describe. It’s a very clever mattress topper which heats or cools, depending on how you set it. My sister and brother in law have one, they rave about it. Each person can set their own side to suit.

Being able to search for an email in Outlook.

Having the option to listen to all books on Audible read by a British person. Sorry American friends, I need to listen to books at warp speed and American accents don’t speed up as well. Missed out on so many good books by American authors 🥲

That exists

I agree about smear tests. But home testing has been brought in for certain cohorts and hopefully the NHS will expand home testing for all.

Tablets so that people don't produce nonenal. I was reading about this the other day, it's 'old people smell' that can't be washed off etc.

Self driving cars. I know they have been invented but I look forward to the day they're safe enough that we can choose to use one.

Specs that don't fog up when you go in a hot room and which resist rain drops.

Hmm, I wonder if rainex would work on specs. It's all glass.

An app that lets you know how many calories are in a plate of food in front of you when you hold your camera phone over it.

Chatgpt does a fair job at this and tells you what it thinks each item is and what it estimates as a portion size.

Sorry, I know people hate AI.

“A robot vac that can climb stairs”

Or hover? A tiny little housework Dalek that can clean stairs and surfaces, fly up and clear the gutters, and unblock the sink with its plunger!

I was thinking it could go down stairs like a slinky. See, the technology is already there!

GinToBegin · 14/07/2025 22:09

Electricity that doesn’t need leads for small/medium appliances. Like wireless charging, but for your lamps, tellybox and the like.

Corned beef tins that are easy to open! (This always gets moaned about whenever corned beef is mentioned).

Also, more pockets (that are functional, rather than stylish) in women's clothing!

I see your corned beef tins and raise you anchovies. How is it possible to get the tin open and not splatter yourself with oil? Money to be made there I reckon.

Time travel

Delicious food with virtually no calories

A machine that if you put the fabric , a pattern and your measurements in, will create your perfect outfit.

Yes like a 3D printer for clothes, that would be amazing! I always have really specific clothes I want but they never exist.

I’d like a pill invented that you can take instead of eating meals and it gives you all the nutrients you need and fills you up.

3678194b · 14/07/2025 22:11

I also think some time travelling device should have been invented by now!

At least one that can zap you from holiday to back home in real time, that doesn't involve all the queueing and travelling to and between airports!

Vaccinations thaf don't have to be injected into the skin, just zapped in somehow from the surface!

A comfortable bra. Millions would be made.

I remember years ago, there was a new kind of bra that came out that was soft but moulded to shape all over. It would stand up on its own. Marks had them and I bought one and tried it. It was blissfully comfortable but looked like I had 2 loo rolls stuck out in front of me. It went back. I think others must have thought the same because it vanished quickly....gonna say some 30 years ago, might have been longer.

Hotel rooms that accept 5 people without charging you for two rooms.
central locking for houses.

I have central locking at my house! Not windows, though, just doors.

Second this.

there are (or used to be) those too. I got vaccinations with one in the early 70's but I gather there was an infection risk, also they didn't work reliably. https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co148073/ped-o-jet

A group like the scouts that is not run by volunteers (the waitlists in my town are insane).

A way to identify bright kids that doesn’t rely on the heavily-tutored 11+

PureBlackVoid · 14/07/2025 22:18

A way to put electricity somewhere without having to chisel walls and connect to existing wires inside walls and create a whole mess. If I need an extra plug here or a light there, just attach it to the wall and it just picks up electricity through the air.

Drive through shops for top ups or when you forget/run out of bits (these may well exist somewhere, but they should be everywhere). I don’t know why it’s possible get a whole bucket of fried chicken, but not milk, some biscuits and an onion without having to get out of the car.

3678194b · 14/07/2025 22:20

Liquid/tablet form of food/nutrition that people would actually enjoy and even crave.

I know there is Ensure liquid feeds etc that are nutritionally balanced, but how much more convenient would it be if we didn't have emotional attachment to cooking/dining out.

It would certainly save having to think what to cook for dinner and then having to shop for it.

Not have to kill animals and breed purely for food. Yes there would be much wider implications but if we were satisfied and just to be satiated by something simple that would be nutritious and produce everything we needed, and also enjoyed!

Windows that have changing views, as in the 1990 "Total Recall".

A roof that stays on in strong wind and does not leak!

💯 Why are roofs so shit!? We've been putting roofs on houses for THOUSANDS of years and they are just as shit as when we started. Pretty much.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 14/07/2025 21:20

Yes!

A hotel with a teeny-tiny bunk bed room, why doesn't that exist? I stayed in an apartment with a sofabed, but it had a maaaassive closet, and a huge hall cupboard too. I'd gladly budge up a bit in the shared space or pay a premium for somewhere to sling my son in his own room.

We've stayed in some like this- Efteling was ny favourite

I grew up in a tiny African country and had amazing biology and history teachers (unresourced). When my biology teacher taught us about synovial fluid, I thought of inventing little synovial fluid pillows to transplant into joints. Didn't know about osteoarthritis or bursa (and bursitis then). I was 12/13. Almost 30 years later watched my dad's pain from osteoarthritis and now my amazing Mil. Its hell. . I wonder why these haven't been invented.

Also a highly personalised microchip that checks your hormones and brain chemistry nonstop and responds by dosing you with just the right amount of the required chemicals to keep you balanced. For persons with mood or brain chemistry disorders, peri and menopausal women, period disorders, certain types of insomnia, etc

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 14/07/2025 22:28

Yes to packages that peel open rather than break off, delaminate or remain struck.

Also some sort of automatic clamp that will hold a cat still, with it's claws out the way and head still whilst you administer tablets or spot on. It would need to be a stealth clamp so is can be put in place without the cat noticing.

3678194b · 14/07/2025 22:28

@godmum56 i have seen similar in films/TV.

Guess they still break the skin though. I'm thinking more one that penetrates into the system not by breaking the skin!

A hairdryer that dries your hair in under a minute and doesn’t make it frizzy
