Inspired by the Sweets you used to hate as a child thread, I thought I’d start one about the sweets I loved as a child (and probably still love too).

Chocolate cigarettes - they has edible paper round them and came in a pack that looked like a real cigarette packet.

Anything coffee flavoured.

Swizzels double lollies.

Walnut whips - and the coffee walnut whips in particular.

I’m sure there are more - my memory is not as good as it used to be - even for sweets.

Icy Cups

-the most delicious chocolate ever created (unless you accidentally bit the foil 😖)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/05/2025 17:32

I have a love-hate relationship with Creme Eggs, @GroovyChick87 - I crave them, but they are so sweet that I find them a bit much while I eat one - and then I want another!

I also love the sweets made with that fake chocolate - like the jazzies with the hundreds and thousands on them - I can’t explain why because I also love really good, dark chocolate, and jazzies couldn’t be further from that.

And then there was the chocolate fudge my mum used to make - it wasn’t a chewy fudge - she used to beat it as it cooled, so it went grainy, like Scottish tablet - and it set hard, but ohhh my it was delicious. I make it myself, very occasionally - I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic last autumn, so can’t have too much sugar.

Talking about it is fine, although it is making me crave sweets!

Giant buttons (actually don't think they existed until I was an adult but I love them too much to leave em off)

Back in the mists of time ...1970s
Fruit flavoured sticks , (lime/orange.strawberry) slightly chewy , slightly fizzy
Bags of fruit flavoured sweets that were hollow but had bumpy texture ( not sugar , more like bubbles)
Fizzy sherbety sweets which were like a honeycomb rock inside and bright red sherbet on the outside
Fruitella when they were in foil wrappers
Toffee BonBons
Toffee Pillows ( weird shaped crunchy butterscotch)
Opal Fruits (as they were) with a lemon one not the rank blackcurrant

Are you Scottish by any chance @ChocolateGanache ? I ask because I think Wham Bars were by MacGowans and not that well known outside Scotland? I do remember the lurid pink colour and the fizzy sprinkles….and the 10p ones were MAHOOSIVE…absolutely excellent at pulling out fillings!

Yourinmyspot · 30/05/2025 18:13

We used to get 20p on a Saturday to spend on sweets at the post office. They had them in jars or penny sweets. We used to be able to get 2oz of something out of a jar for around 12p and spent the rest on penny sweets.

My favourites were:
Yorkshire mixture,
sherbet pips,
bonbons,
sherbet,
chewing nuts,
blackcurrant and liquorice (though they were 18p),
needlers fruits,
kola cubes,
kop kops

They used to have these a team bars that were chocolate with strawberry filling for 5p that I loved. I used to like football shields too, basically the same as love hearts but with football teams on instead. Happy days.

Tooty Frooties. Don't think you can get them any more.

Yamyamabroad · 30/05/2025 18:26

There's a chocolate covered bar I've been wracking my brain over for at least 10 years now and no one seems to remember it. It was about the size of a mars bar ( olden day size) and was a hard meringue type filling with milk chocolate over it. Flat on one side and semi circle for the rest. I think it was strawberry flavour meringue. Not hard like a crunchy and not soft like an aero.
Did it really exist or was it me confusing fantasy with fact??
