Gail’s warning

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:10

My husband bought a tea and a hot cross bun in a Gail’s in central London yesterday, and they refused to toast it.

That’s it, that’s my PSA. Idk if it’s Gail-wide or if he was unlucky. I found some guff on their website about their HCBs being good enough not to toast but no actual confession. DH had no time to argue so just ate it: it was rubbish. I’d have asked for a swap for something that is meant to be eaten cold, but he is less good at sticking up for himself so had to live with the sadness.

Vipers, be warned.

If he had no time to argue with hospitality staff, he wouldn't have had time to have the HCB toasted.

Cornishmumofone · 27/03/2025 16:13

Have a tea cake if you want something toasted. A good hot cross bun is nicer cold!

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 27/03/2025 16:14

Much prefer them untoasted with tonnes of butter. Only toasted if getting a bit old in our house.

ExtraDecluttering · 27/03/2025 16:14

Do others toast them? I've never really noticed coffee shops selling them, for me they are something you have at home and definitely always toasted. I agree that a cold HCB is a very sad thing indeed.

TennesseeStella · 27/03/2025 16:14

I'm with Gail's tbh, life is short and HCBs are just as nice cold.

It’s Gail’s. Used to be good, upmarket. Now just as ubiquitous as Costa. Not surprised.

HauntedBungalow · 27/03/2025 16:17

Isn't it just a teacake with a cross on it? I'd expect it to be toasted just as teacakes are.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 27/03/2025 16:18

I'm with you OP. A HCB needs to be split horizontally and have the cut surfaces toasted. Let me guess, if they gave him butter with it it was straight from the fridge and rock hard? Heathens.

Chersfrozenface · 27/03/2025 16:19

I never toast HCBs.

If it's horrible cold, it's a horrible HBC full stop and not worth eating.

FlowerUser · 27/03/2025 16:20

Well there's one opened up and I have a voucher but I definitely will not be going now. I think I'm going to have to boycott it forever on principle and in solidarity with you.

Maybe we should mount a protest and a petition to Parliament?!

HauntedBungalow · 27/03/2025 16:22

Parliament? Screw those amateurs. I'm going straight to the Pope on this one.

See what so-called "Gail's" does when the wrath of God Himself descends on them.

Not so. A HCB is a type of teacakes ergo splitting and toasting is required.

VenusClapTrap · 27/03/2025 16:25

I’ve never been to a Gail’s, I don’t think. Thank you for the warning. I shall avoid if I stumble across one.

CitizenofMoronia · 27/03/2025 16:27

the clue is in the name HOT cross bun! trading standards an no less!

SomethingFun · 27/03/2025 16:28

Hot cross buns are not meant to be eaten cold! Minging. I imagine they’re worried they’ll get raisins stuck in their middle class artisan toasters or something.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 27/03/2025 16:30

Their carrot cake is quite nice though.

FrenchandSaunders · 27/03/2025 16:31

Gails is a travesty ... so expensive and not much nicer than other basic bakeries.

Endofyear · 27/03/2025 16:31

Ah that's a shame 🙁 I much prefer them toasted with lots of butter!

To be fair, they do yummy food. But I shall swerve the hot cross buns as they absolutely should be toasted and slathered in butter.

SummerInSun · 27/03/2025 16:34

I’m a big fan of Gail’s, but you are rights - they done toast Hot Cross Buns. Discovered this last Easter or maybe the one before? Not sure why it’s their policy, but it is really disappointing. I don’t buy them to have in store for that reason.

I agree, they've lost their touch as they've gotten so big.

Cognacsoft · 27/03/2025 16:34

No butter at all?
They’re psychopaths!
