Tesla cars: are you getting rid of yours?

CrazyOldMe · 13/03/2025 21:16

Disclaimer: I can't afford a Tesla anyway!

However, I do know of several very decent people who own Tesla cars. They paid a lot for them and know that they can only sell them at a loss. It doesn't seem fair really.

If you have one, what are your future plans with it?

On that note, what will happen to the cars next do you think? Will the company go bust?

I won't be selling mine, I enjoy driving it.
I bought it around 18 months ago and I imagine it would be a bad decision to sell it now for financial reasons anyway.
I also don't make financial or life decisions based on politics. The virtue signalling around Teslas annoys me and makes me less not more likely to get rid of mine.It is nobodys business what car I drive.
My main concern is that while I charge at home around 90% of the time on longer journeys I do sometimes need to charge and prefer the Tesla chargers, so if there are fewer of those I won't be happy
Even so I will make it work

MrsTheodoreLogan · 13/03/2025 21:23

I have no idea what the political leanings of the CEO of Volvo or Toyota are, I don't think it matters to most people, they just choose their car based on what they need/like don't they?

watchseehear · 13/03/2025 21:24

If I had one I would definitely think about getting rid of it OP. Swasticars are not cool!

Edit this is not a judgement on anyone who owns one. I appreciate it is not their fault that Elon is doing as he currently is.

But I would definitely be wary of someone who bought one now knowing what he is up to.

See this is the kind of shite that makes me even more determined to keep mine

Mespher · 13/03/2025 21:26

Most of them will be company cars, most EVs are company cars

I completely agree. Everyone I know who has one is a really decent person and not aligned with Elon in any way. I do feel bad for them.

Of course they're selling them at a loss; that's second hard cars for you!

2dogsandabudgie · 13/03/2025 21:29

I've never sold a car for more than I paid for it. I thought everyone made a loss when it comes to selling cars.

No need to feel bad for me, I have a nice car I enjoy driving and really couldn't care less if anyone wants to judge or think they know anything about me becaause of it.

LameBorzoi · 13/03/2025 21:56

I won't be selling mine, but it does make it hard to buy another. In practicality, I'm not sure any other brands are actually more ethical.

Do you own a car made by a VW or Ford owned brand, though? Less dramatic, but just as bad.

TonerNeedsReplacing · 13/03/2025 21:59

I have a Tesla, I enjoy driving it and I intend to keep it until it is no longer practical to do so. Elon Musk’s politics are neither here nor there.

ethelredonagoodday · 13/03/2025 22:06

Ours is through my husband’s work, and is due for renewal later in the year. We’ve liked it, but it does have a couple of niggly, annoying features, so I think we might go back to a German car.

No I don't own any car.

So whilst I like the catchiness of the term "Swasticar", it would feel rather hypocritical to use it against Teslas while we happily own a Volkswagen......

I think sales figures are showing that people are stopping supporting Tesla. Not sure it makes sense to get rid of your car early at a loss just because hes such a dick…

But with Tesla chargers being burnt down all over the place in the states, it may well become less practical to own one eventually.

I’ve always slightly judged anyone who buys one because Musk has always been a prick, although I understand they’re relatively inexpensive and tax efficient as a company car.

But I’d really judge anyone who bought one now.

Notjustabrunette · 13/03/2025 23:12

If I had one, I wouldn’t sell it. Not sure what that would achieve? But I wouldn’t buy one new.
We were talking about going to Florida next summer, but I won’t be doing that now.

Derbee · 13/03/2025 23:13

We were planning on going to the states this winter for skiing, but I wouldn’t travel there currently. I’m disgusted by the political landscape.

JustSawJohnny · 13/03/2025 23:46

I think most reasonable people understand that most Tesla drivers had them before Musk revealed himself as Vice Twunt and don't expect people to inconvenience themselves by changing cars.

Would I drive one now, though? No.

Would I quietly judge someone who bought one at the moment (or in the future)? Yes.

And those who continue to buy them, knowing what a scumbag he is?

That's the kicker, for me.

The point is you don't know the political leanings of those CEOs because they keep quiet and focus on their role in the company. The company wouldn't hire someone very politically loud.

If a person is vocal about politics, then customers are potentially going to a) notice b) care.

Exactly! Also see the history of Porsche and the nazis.

Amonyme · 14/03/2025 00:20

I wouldn't particularly judge anyone who owned one pre 2024, although I do judge people a little if they spend more than they can afford on cars.

But I would judge anyone who bought a Tesla now. Musk has shown how antidemocratic and extreme right he is, so giving money to Tesla is popping up a fascist. It is quite reasonable to form an opinion about someone who is happy to give money to someone who is so flagrantly trying to shatter any sense of fair and proper government in the US

But buying a Tesla now is like giving money to Hitler then. Tesla is actually owned by a dangerous fascist right now.
Chatting about other car brands etc is just, at best, silly whataboutery
