Tesla cars: are you getting rid of yours?

CrazyOldMe · 13/03/2025 21:16

Disclaimer: I can't afford a Tesla anyway!

However, I do know of several very decent people who own Tesla cars. They paid a lot for them and know that they can only sell them at a loss. It doesn't seem fair really.

If you have one, what are your future plans with it?

On that note, what will happen to the cars next do you think? Will the company go bust?

Does he even care? Tesla is only a portion of his income / financial holdings. I don't see people boycotting PayPal.

( I know PayPal is less visible. I'm just not sure that a total collapse of Tesla would really hurt him)

Edited

Musk sold his interests in PayPal. I checked because I use it.

You do need to start somewhere, and I'm certainly not buying a new Tesla, because that would fund these crazy politics.

On the other hand, I'm not going to sell my current one, because doing that changes nothing.

And it's not whataboutery, it's more "does Musk even really care? What is it that will make an impact?".

Musk cares. Imo, he wouldn’t have conscripted Trump into turning the White House grounds into a car sales lot, otherwise.

This is what I don't understand. I assumed Musk would have understood that acting the way he did would be taking an Axe to Tesla and that Musk just didn't care.

But it's clear he actually does, from the effort to get Trump to promote the car etc.

It was surely so obvious that this would be the outcome. That most people around the world were going to be horrified by either the Nazi symbolism or the riding roughshod over constitutional arrangements (and many people would be horrified by both)

I'm boycotting paypal, and so are many people I know. I've seen several people on MN also mentioning it.

NB it is not owned by Musk but there are many good reasons to boycott it.

I hope so - that means there's a chance that the boycotting sends a message.

Tell me more? I feel like I should have some idea of this stuff, but I have zero headspace right now.

See this is the kind of shite that makes me even more determined to keep mine

100% agree. This kind of virtue signalling is almost certainly coming from people who don’t even own an EV, let alone a Tesla, so it’s very easy to smugly say they’d get rid of their car. I call bullshit. We’ve got an EV and plenty of people think we’re idiots but I don’t care 🤷‍♀️ We’ll do what we want thanks.

Interesting that Tesla's sales have plummeted though.

But I can imagine people who own them will hang on to them because the resale value will have dropped substantially too. So I can understand the defensiveness from current owners

So iyo someone shouldnt be allowed to object and protest that they don't agree with this nazi because they dont own an ev/tesla. It's only you that gets that choice because you own one. Everyone else is 'virtue signalling'.

OK. How patronising.

Personally I don't care if you keep your Tesla or get rid of it...he has made his money from you and other customers ...its inhibiting the new purchases that can now make the greater impact.

Owning a Tesla might make you feel superior and in a position to belittle peoples objections, no matter how big or small that objection is, but dont expect others to be convinced you are superior.

outofofficeagain · 17/03/2025 20:57

Yes, "I don't care if he's a Nazi, and only my opinion counts because I'm better than you" is not the look they think it is.

I have a Tesla and I love it, I have no intention of selling it or being embarrassed or sorry about what car I drive.
I DO care that Musk is a Nazi, he is a horrible human being but that bears no relation to me buying a car 18 months ago.
If I had bought it becasue of Musk you may have a point but I bought it in spite of him.

Kendodd · 18/03/2025 07:34

I wonder if the MAGA lot are in a real dilemma about Tesla? They love Trump and Musk and want to cheerlead them in every way, loved the White House lawn showroom but... electric cars, that's all woke, climate change nonsense.

What is a MAGA supporter to do ???

Well they aren't the most rooted in reality group of people so I am sure they will manage to be ok with it.
Democrats are (were?) 5 times more likely to buy a Tesla than Republicans apparently

outofofficeagain · 18/03/2025 09:21

Tesla are fucked because Musk’s fascism has coincided with a lot more luxury electric cars on the market - so it’s easyto choose an alternative and the MAGA nuts will never buy electric.

EndlessWashingWhenWillItEnd · 18/03/2025 10:05

I hope those getting rid are not shopping at Amazon or temu/ shein or anywhere apart from the ethical brands really! Privileged virtue signalling! I couldn’t afford a Tesla and if I had one, I’m certain I couldn’t afford to sell it at a loss and buy another car!!

I am. For anyone who wants to boycott Amazon, find what you're looking for on Amazon then click to the supplier's website and buy direct.

Jobs a good'un.Grin

Ive avoided Amazon as much as possible for years. Unfortunately they seem to be the default gift card people give. My shopping choices are far from perfect but I really don't understand this 'all or nothing' mentally. Do posters with this view extend it to other areas of their lives? So, for example, if I can't eat the perfect diet then I might as well just eat junk? Or if can't live the perfect eco life there's no point bothering to recycle? Surely most people just do the best they can even if not perfect? That's what I try to do with my shopping and investment choices. I would certainly think about ethics with big purchases like a car. I would imagine a lot of Tesla drivers did make a considered choice to get electric rather than petrol. They might well care what their money is now funding.

Well, I care, but I mafe the best choice I could at the time. Selling the car now would not change that. The only person that selling it would disadvantage would be me.

If I had one I would definitely think about getting rid of it OP. Swasticars are not cool!

Edit this is not a judgement on anyone who owns one. I appreciate it is not their fault that Elon is doing as he currently is.

But I would definitely be wary of someone who bought one now knowing what he is up to.

It absolutely is judgmental!

Why are you trying to pretend it’s not? Own your judginess 🙄

Yes, I completely agree, buying a Tesla WAS the ethical choice. I feel sorry for people who bought them then .

Did you read the comment? Clearly not.

I will always judge people who support fascism but if they bought a Tesla before Musk's recent twattishness and extent of fascist behaviour became obvious it clearly isn't their fault. So I am not judging them.

Buying one recently on the other hand.... no excuses. And yes I will happily judge anyone for that.

But how would you know when someone has bought a Tesla? We've had ours 3 years but won't put a shitty sticker on it. It's no one else's business.

GasPanic · 18/03/2025 12:41

I like the idea of boycotting something I can't afford in order to make myself feel morally superior.

I'd like to announce I am boycotting private jets. It's my contribution to saving the planet.
