Zelensky - feeling quite sad

Bakewelltart1 · 01/03/2025 20:18

I know that there are several threads about him, but I’ve watched the interview again today.
I don’t know what’s made me feel more sad - how exhausted and disappointed he looked, the fact that English isn’t his first language and it must have been hard to speak, let alone speak whilst being verbally attacked, or the suit question.
When the war is over, I want to buy that man the best suit money can buy!
How can anyone kick someone when they are so down anyway.

I agree with you but felt better today seeing him getting on so well with Keir Starmer and knowing he has a meeting with the King tomorrow. Small things maybe but symbolically huge.

Bakewelltart1 · 01/03/2025 20:21

Agreed! He needs support right now. I hope these meetings have lifted him slightly.

It was a horrible display. "Why aren't you wearing a suit?". They have no idea what war means.
To hector and bully him like that was shameful.
Zekensky was right, before they shut him down, that they have a big ocean to protect them. They have no idea what it's like to have a large, powerful aggressor on your border.

Yes, he knows Starmer and the King support him. He looks exhausted, poor man.

TheDublin3 · 01/03/2025 20:24

English isn’t even his second language - and having to face into an ambush like that with a bunch of fucking oiks was disgusting.

Wildflowers99 · 01/03/2025 20:24

I agree. I hadn’t really thought about Zelenskyy as a person before, but the attempted humiliation and ambush of him yesterday was fucking awful to witness. He knew he couldn’t respond in the way he wanted to, so had to take the beating so to speak. I hope his visit to the UK lifts him a bit, there were crowds cheering for him at downing st which is nice.

CarmelaBrunella · 01/03/2025 20:26

And then afterwards the Americans cancelled the press conference and the meal and basically kicked him out. They should be ashamed, and I'm sure many decent Americans are.

Patterncarmen · 01/03/2025 20:28

Well, Sir Keir just pledged £2.26 billion to Zelenskyy of support. It is a loan guaranteed by frozen Russian assets. I am grinning ear to ear. Thank you Sir Keir for doing the decent thing which Trump is incapable of. Just reported by the BBC. Let’s hope a European alliance drives back Putin and makes the USA irrelevant and Trump is held to account for the nasty piece of work he is.

This American surely is ashamed of Trump. I am also a British Citizen and see that the PM did the right thing.

It's going to be tough, but I really hope so.

He should read the other thread to cheer himself up 😂

So do I. So do I. I voted for Harris, and find the current American administration disgraceful. America is capable of being so much better.

Yes, I'm sure that there must be many like you. All the decent US citizens must be horrified by that dreadful show of bullying - against a man leading a nation in war against a Russian invasion.

Of course. I hope they take every opportunity to challenge this current regime.

The suit question when they had Elon Musk in the Oval Office with what looked like jeans, t shirt and baseball cap on and his son picking his nose... The rank hypocrisy, the lack of grace or manners. Appalling behaviour against any guest.

That said I've listened to some reporting/analysis saying the behaviour from trump is not unusual, it just usually happens in the closed door meetings. And that Zelensky may have been aware what he was doing in not pandering to Trump's ego.

MarvellousMarch · 01/03/2025 20:33

Well he may have been ambushed but he handled himself extremely well!!
Imagine how tired and frustrated he is.
He didn't shout or loose his temper and the way he said "i know" when they said your country is in big trouble.
He also made some remarks about the suit the guy was wearing who made the comment. The guy that made the comment looked dreadful!!

Even trump said he thought zelensky looked good. Unfortunately I think they sounded and looked like gangstas, talking about suits and looking good and respect and showing thanks.
In fact isn't that the opening of the godfather, showing respect coming here aksing me for a favour?

There are a lot of us who are horrified by what is going on. I still have a vote in the USA even though I live in the UK, and I’ve been contacting my representative repeatedly about what is going on.

The guy who made the comment was the boyfriend of Marjorie Taylor Green, a Trump apologist. It was disgusting.

I’m afraid £2bn is a drop in the ocean - he did very well to stand his ground. He came out of that Oval Office situation as the PR victor and Trump and Vance have irritated and misread a huge proportion of their own electorate. Starmer and other European leaders have been galvanised to reiterate support. Trump looks bad.

I am extremely glad Starmer is standing with Ukraine as he did prior to his election and I’m afraid I’m just as glad Labour haven’t ousted him and put Angela Rayner in to run the show. She is good at other things but Starmer should remain leader while the misogynists of the world unite.

Zelensky's choice of clothing is a calculated decision. He could wear a beautiful suit if he wanted to but if he suddenly switched to formal suits, it might create a disconnect between him and the people enduring war.

This- said little nose picking charmer told Trump he wasn’t the president , to leave and reporters to shush their mouths.

CarmelaBrunella · 01/03/2025 20:38

Yes, it's a gesture - he's wearing simple, practical clothing. It's a clear message that his nation is at war.

It is a drop in the bucket, yes. But if it helps galvanise the Europeans into action, then that is really good. The special relationship between the UK and the USA is over with, at least when Trump is in power. We’ll see what happens at the European summit. It is going to take some concerted effort and coordination to stand against Putin, but it is in Europe’s self interest to defend itself against him.

Trump is showing his true colours to the world for sure…. America is going to be very isolated indeed.

Molly70 · 01/03/2025 20:39

I don’t think that meeting was the time and place for Zelensky to start lecturing Trump and Vance. He called Vance, JD, which was very disrespectful. Trump ribbed him about his attire when he greeted him but it was a journalist who brought it up in the meeting. Zelinsky was there to sign the mineral agreement and he should have stuck to that and discussed other concerns privately. It was Trump and Vance who were ambushed

Odras · 01/03/2025 20:40

I don’t think we should even treat our enemies like this. Humiliation, bullying. It’s horrific.
