Zelensky - feeling quite sad

Bakewelltart1 · 01/03/2025 20:18

I know that there are several threads about him, but I’ve watched the interview again today.
I don’t know what’s made me feel more sad - how exhausted and disappointed he looked, the fact that English isn’t his first language and it must have been hard to speak, let alone speak whilst being verbally attacked, or the suit question.
When the war is over, I want to buy that man the best suit money can buy!
How can anyone kick someone when they are so down anyway.

@ForAzureSeal The suit question when they had Elon Musk in the Oval Office with what looked like jeans, t shirt and baseball cap on and his son picking his nose... The rank hypocrisy, the lack of grace or manners. Appalling behaviour against any guest.

They also had John Fetterman wearing shorts to the inauguration...but it's ok because it's his "thing" apparently.

What do you mean about potential second term? Trump can’t stand again. I thought 2 terms was the maximum a president can do.

Presidents can only serve 2 terms in the USA, yes. THe law was changed after FDR served three terms.

I don’t think that meeting was the time and place for Zelensky to start lecturing Trump and Vance. He called Vance, JD, which was very disrespectful. Trump ribbed him about his attire when he greeted him but it was a journalist who brought it up in the meeting. Zelinsky was there to sign the mineral agreement and he should have stuck to that and discussed other concerns privately. It was Trump and Vance who were ambushed

Disrespectful 😂 I can’t possibly type how I would have addressed Vance because it would take too long and have my post deleted due to offensive language. I read his book. It was extremely dull and self-aggrandising. I won’t be reading his next one.

I live in the US so it is a bit early

Put it back in the kitchen then.

I would love to have seen Zelensky with an interpreter. That would have slowed things down a bit and taken the wind out of the terrible two's motormouth sails.

But they had come ready to pounce and it was a totally orchestrated setup, so maybe nothing would have worked anyway.

Good to see a nice welcome in the UK. The contrast between Statesmanship and Trumpism is so stark. I say that whether or not you are a fan of Starmer.

Yes. We were saying that as we watched. It would certainly have evened things up a bit.

Trump said before the election, “Vote for me and you’ll never have to vote again.” A clear signal that he intended to install himself as a dictator and ban elections.

Have you been drinking the Fox News kool-aid?

Seriously though, you must have watched a different edit from the rest of us.

Anyone seen the vid of him with Starmer this evening? He had tears in his eyes when Starmer was talking about the British public and how much we support him. It’s all been so uncomfortable to watch.

I dislike Starmer very much but today I slightly warmed to him. He made a big effort to welcome Zelensky and show him support.

I think you meant to write "I don't think the meeting was the time and place for Trump and Vance to humiliate a president of a supposedly ally nation who looked almost broken after fighting a brutal invasion of his country for three years and to try to browbeat him into signing a minerals agreement that would provide zero security guarantees to stop Putin continuing to kill hundreds and thousands of Ukrainians. They deliberately ambushed him, even inviting a reporter from Russian state media inside the Oval (then pretending to kick them out) so their puppet master Putin could see what good and loyal little boys they were being."

There, fixed it for you.

Mucholderlittlewiser · 01/03/2025 21:34

Trump is testing the waters for a potential second term

This IS Trump's second term.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 01/03/2025 21:34

Wildflowers99 · 01/03/2025 20:24

I agree. I hadn’t really thought about Zelenskyy as a person before, but the attempted humiliation and ambush of him yesterday was fucking awful to witness. He knew he couldn’t respond in the way he wanted to, so had to take the beating so to speak. I hope his visit to the UK lifts him a bit, there were crowds cheering for him at downing st which is nice.

This entirely. It actually reminded me so much of being bullied at high school that I had to turn over before I had a panic attack. That makes me sound like a massive snowflake but it's true. It was a horrible, horrible uncomfortable watch.

BatchCookBabe · 01/03/2025 21:34

100% with you @Bakewelltart1 I really feel for Zelenskyy! 😢

He was a comedian before he was a politician. He’s used to hecklers. He did have an interpreter for the later Fox News interview but only needed a couple of words to be explained. He has learned English in three years while leading a nation at war and I thought he came across well when he was allowed to get a word in over Vance’s shouting.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 01/03/2025 21:36

Vance was just a rude bully.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 01/03/2025 21:38

Also massively petty but knowing how much Trump idolises our royals, I love the fact that Zelensky is getting to meet them before him. I know they'll all be impartial in front of the cameras but bet Chas will tell him behind closed doors that they all think Donald is a massive tosspot too.

SunDash · 01/03/2025 21:38

The Putin-TrumpVance thing reminds me of the Molotov-Ribbintrop Pact, where they just chop up the cake between themselves..sorry if I spelt that wrong history buffs.
Trump has behaved dispicably, with his amateur troll in tow. They were right, he's not president material 😢

Tucking Netanyahu in his chair, hosting a civilian like god in the Oval Office with his son wiping his bogies on the table to treating a sovereign county's leader with such despicable behaviour live on TV is absolutely disgusting. I'm not a fan of Zelensky, for his politics, for getting into bed with the wrong guys from the very start and his wife spending thousands in Cartier whilst their fellow citizens have become refugees but no one deserves to be treated with such abhorrent behaviour. Shame on them!

You've fallen for Russian disinformation fact checked here:

I don't mean to be unkind, but I think the OP has a fair bit of projection in it, I'm sure he's made of tougher stuff than that - they all are, they didn't get into positions of huge power by being thin skinnned.

DivorcedMumOfAdults · 01/03/2025 21:39

The part I saw ( on BBC iPlayer) was Trump expecting Zelenskyy to be more grateful and then getting angry- Trump came across as a bully and I couldn’t bear to watch any more

TheOliveFinch · 01/03/2025 21:40

As Trump does idolise the Royal family do sign a petition on change.org to rescind Trump’s invitation to a state visit

With wanting to step back from alliances and global support, trade tariffs and isolationist politics, I feel like the US is making itself less relevant on the global stage. This will embolden Europe to collaborate more in terms of defence and security.

Meanwhile Americans can watch prices go up and up and up as they put tariffs on everyone, which will harm Americans in the long run… their grocery prices are already outrageous (I paid $6 for a normal loaf of bread when I was last there). So long America being the leader of the free world.

Edited

$5 for a cauliflower, $5 for a head of broccoli. Impossible for disabled Americans to eat when he takes away their welfare payments.

Livelovebehappy · 01/03/2025 21:41

Dandelion193 · 01/03/2025 21:23

I don't think that's the case, people are disappointed and disgusted in trumps behaviour and he will serve natural consequences of his actions when other countries stop treating them so favourably. I've yet to see anyone say Europe should start a war with America and Russia 😂
No-one should accept such poor behaviour from another country. So far other countries seem to working out how to support Ukraine without America as they're clearly excluding themselves

Yep, and ‘these other countries’ have been supporting Ukraine for three long years. And where are we now? Millions of pounds out of pocket, and absolutely no progress made. There comes a time when surely a rational person would say that throwing money and weapons at the problem isn’t working. Europe give weapons and money to Ukraine. China and Iran provide weapons and money to a Russia. And so on and on it goes. There needs to be another option, otherwise this war could potentially go on for years.

JudgeJ · 01/03/2025 21:43

TheDublin3 · 01/03/2025 20:24

English isn’t even his second language - and having to face into an ambush like that with a bunch of fucking oiks was disgusting.

He seems to have a better command of English than Trump!
I would love it if he showed up to meet the King wearing a superb suit, metaphorically putting Trump back in his box.
I know that many Americans on this site are appalled by the Trump/Vance show but there are millions of Americans who will be cheering him on, people like the January 6th morons who not only couldn't find Ukraine on a map but a few I've encountered would struggle to find their own state without a named map! That's the scarey thing, they'll be voting in 2028.

SuperTrooper14 · 01/03/2025 21:43

Thankfully the backlash is building: hundreds of anti-Trump and Vance protesters lined the streets of a Vermont town where Vance had gone skiing with his family this weekend. Some of the protest signs were deservedly brutal.
