The video of the coffins being handed over was horrific to watch. I'm glad to read that Shiri's remains have now finally been given to the family. It's truly awful ❤️

Storm Rachel due to land in April.
I rarely read the telegraph, but this is a good round up of what's to come when the budget really kicks in.

This guy has to go. Will we see another minister 'resign' this week? Jonny Reynolds can't continue as business secretary under these circumstances.

I feel like this thread is going to be a little raft in choppy seas, tg!

That article is comprehensive

Practicepracticepracticeagain · 22/02/2025 17:40

Yep. Cannot see how this is not going to be a clusterfuck. I own a business and am battening down the hatches. I laugh out loud whenever Labour talk about their plans for “growth” 🤦‍♀️

Welcome aboard shipmate.
You're not alone. We run a small business too. Dh started it from nothing 25 years ago. It's stressful isn't it.

TheNuthatch · 22/02/2025 19:33

Politics without the pom poms would have made a brilliant thread title!
A little sanity away from all the Starmer worship and Trump threads :-)

Really interesting article here:
https://telegraph.co.uk/gift/cf05fa4f5f22f6d9

It's suggesting that January tax receipts are unexpectedly low because the self employed have adapted around punitive tax measures by working less, or have called it quits, taking early retirement.

Obviously, this puts Reeves in the shit because she is several billion pounds down but, I think it also speaks volumes that the situation is now so toxic that the small sector of the population who gave up sick days and holidays to satisfy their own ambition have seemingly picked up their ball and gone home.

EasternStandard · 22/02/2025 20:02

Oh yes 'faster and further' every blinking time.

Their script gets tired quickly, every interview has the same lines

I half expect the next robotic phrase to be "to infinity and beyond"

If things carry on I think 'stop, drop and roll' might be more appropriate!

Agree.

I’m employed and am very careful with how much I work now.

If reducing my hours means my tax bill will be lower, then that’s what I’ll do.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 22/02/2025 20:58

Sorry, that should have been self employed!

TheNuthatch · 23/02/2025 10:58

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat

I don't blame you. The Chancellor obviously doesn't understand that being self employed means that you can control how much you earn.
My hairdresser and window cleaner have both gone cash only since Xmas. I wonder why!

Someone linked to unemployment figures on another thread. I think they've gone down a bit and people on payroll has gone down

But you can still get a bigger downward push on receipts because behaviours outside that can change

Eg self employed or not counted as unemployed as not actively seeking work

PuttingouttheFirewithGasoline · 23/02/2025 11:35

Checking in I was very late to the last party.

TheNuthatch · 24/02/2025 11:34

I see the free breakfast club announcement has gone down like a lead balloon with schools. On what planet does 60p pay for 30 minutes of childcare and a meal?
Labour mp Mike Amesbury is being sentenced today for punching a man in the street. Sentence could be anything from high level CS to prison so could lead to a bi election.
Macaroon will be schmoozing his way in to the Whitehouse later today.

Breakfast clubs are interesting in that those in schools who likely voted for it will now have to work with little

Merz is making bold statements on the US

I'm not sure how we become independent at the same time as some asking US to be a security backstop

TheNuthatch · 24/02/2025 12:37

Labour MP has been jailed.
