Wynne Evans - another “incident” re: Strictly

Mittens67 · 27/01/2025 13:55

Have just read that Wynne had made an inappropriate remark on the Strictly Tour last month and is now taking time off his radio show.
Having rather dismissed the hand thing on Strictly this year and speculation that there were issues between him and Katya I am now having a rethink.

@InSearchOfMartin those shows you quoted - On the Buses, Carry On films, Benny Hill - were actually funny and it was pretty harmless stuff. I know because I watched them and wasn't offended. Unfortunately, younger generations have been brainwashed into finding everything offensive. You're pretty naive if you don't realise men think about sex a lot of the time.

However, Wynne's remark was crass and misjudged, especially with the husband there. I think we are seeing the effects of Internet porn in that a term such as 'spit roast' has been normalised and entered everyday vocabularly. Online porn has had a far worse effect on men's attitudes and really does encourage misogyny. The way women are objectified in porn is revolting and there is a real nasty edge to it which wasn't there in the 70's.

So it's ok to make sexually degrading comments about women if their husbands aren't there, but disrespectful if the husband is there?

Because women's feelings and experiences aren't as important?

Because respecting a man's masculinity and his ownership of his wife is the priority?

Harris? Who? surely not Whispering Bob?

Good lord no! Rolf.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 29/01/2025 12:48

On The Buses - funny?? Wasn't then, isn't now. The "humour" was for a large part about the unattractiveness of Olive, and how awful it was for her husband to have to "keep her happy".
I have noticed though that a lot of shows from back then that I remembered fondly are full of misogyny when I see them now.
We were groomed into accepting it all as normal.

MysticMel · 29/01/2025 13:46

The word spitroast is disgusting. Even without the sexual connotation it implies a piece of meat.

They're probably thinking about claiming on their death and disgrace insurance, if they have any. It's not a good look for the Go Compare brand that people will now associate it with this sleazy s'leb.

Edited

They could sack Wynne off and offer the Go Compare gig to Paul Potts!

InSearchOfMartin · 29/01/2025 14:15

What makes me sick about this is not only the hard line offenders named eg Rolf (not Whispering Bob thank god) Harris, Gary Glitter, Savile, Jonathan King etc who are rightly vilified and cancelled but the others who seemingly got away with it because it was dismissed as a joke or "banter" 😡like Dave Lee Travers, Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross. There may well be others.

And then we have (so I am told. I didn't see it) - Lorraine Kelly lifting up a bloke's kilt to see what he had under it. Shirley Ballas making innuendo to male contestants on Strictly (Pete Wicks and his pink leather pants). Again there may well be others.

We can't have two-tier sleaze for men and women.

Bignanna · 29/01/2025 14:17

Love the headline in the Mirror-
Go Wynne, Go Wynne Gone!

Don’t think JR and co would get away now with what they said many years ago!

Mittens67 · 29/01/2025 19:43

From reading comments on fb it appears to be mostly (judging from their profiles) women aged 40+ who support this disgusting behaviour, although I am not sure some have actually understood what his comment meant. It seems instead to be turned into a right wing vs left wing anti woke thing. So fed up with every issue being awarded to one side or the other in our increasingly polarised society.

I think the fact that many women can’t see how awful this is makes me even angrier. A lifetime of subconscious conditioning to accept men’s shitty behaviour as normal. I remember my grandmother thinking this way but she was born in 1911 so you might have thought things had moved on since then.

The sexual practice Wynne referred to is undoubtedly painful and probably harmful. I can’t imagine many women outside of porn agreeing to such a thing. But apparently it is foremost in Wynne’s mind as soon as he stands close to a female colleague in the workplace. He then talks to the nearest other male over the top of his female colleague’s head as if she isn’t even a person to be included in his disgusting conversation.

Bizarre comment from a pp regarding Aliaz being present making it worse?!?
I might expect this from neanderthal males who see women as property and can only feel outrage if their own property is involved but from a woman??

So his gf has dumped him (I don't blame her). His brother has died recently so he is grieving. He's now arguably unemployable because of his stupid comment. Strictly stars are supposedly standing by him despite what he said because of his fragile mental health. I can't see this ending well.

HollyBerryz · 30/01/2025 01:11

SassK · 29/01/2025 08:54

I can't believe strictly hasn't been canned.

It's been exposed, on several occasions now, to not be the one big happy family show it's sold as. The dancers who've been removed for bullying their partners, and the dancers who're willing to ignore and dismiss blatant sleaze (it seems clear now that the wandering hand clip wasn't a private joke), show how ruthless it all is. Ignoring/excusing shit like that makes you part of the problem.

I guess because people are still watching it!

There was a simple way he could have avoided being sacked and his girlfriend dumping him though. Cry me a river.

CerealPosterHere · 30/01/2025 07:02

Disgusting sleaze bag who seems to think it’s the 1980s still

myplace · 30/01/2025 07:16

Right. I hate what he said. I hate that he said it in the work place. It’s right that he is facing consequences.

But- people can say crap and be nice people. You can grow up in an environment where swearing is the norm, sexist banter is the norm, and casually copy that norm.

He could be a nice guy who would never hurt anyone- and still have a potty mouth. So I can see why the strictly team would stand by him.
His girlfriend must have been half out already, I think.

We have done people a disservice by tolerating banter for so long. It’s ingrained in some men’s manners that that’s how you get a laugh and be the life and soul of the party.

ExtraDisorganised · 30/01/2025 07:23

How is he not hurting anyone by groping and making sexually lewd comments to his female colleagues. You can grow up in an environment where that is the norm and realise it's wrong.

Freysimo · 30/01/2025 07:34

Surely every man today, especially one in showbusiness, would realise what a vile comment this was? It wasn't banter, it was demeaning to every woman there and I only wish one had called him out on it.

ExtraDisorganised · 30/01/2025 07:52

Also, did he not learn anything from the Gregg Wallace business? It's not than they don't realise, it's that they don't care.

This is what gets me thinking! But the conclusion is that men like this don’t give a shit, they are entitled enough to think everyone around them loves the “banter” (despite warnings from bosses that they don’t).

I suppose it’s the same as criminal behaviour, they always think they’ll never get caught and suffer any consequences.

Tissuesandfluff · 30/01/2025 09:54

Yeah they don't care then they go all poor me instead of reframing their thinking and attitudes.

I went to a school where sexist banter was the norm. I used to think it's was pretty harmless. I am younger than WE and I know now it is not.

Don't excuse him.

I don’t know what his background is or whether he’s a nice guy or not( I suspect not). But a grown man in a position that potentially makes him a role model should be able to understand professional boundaries . And should be able to keep his dirty thoughts to himself and behave appropriately.
This sexist attitude needs to be called out every single time if things are ever going to change. No one would accept people making racist remarks as just banter any more.

I am over 60. I would absolutely call this out as would all the women I know. When I look back at TV etc when I was growing up the level of misogyny was breathtaking. But it was seem as “ humour” We didn’t speak out then as it was seen as the norm. I think that is very sad.

ThePolarBearWhoLostHisCrown · 30/01/2025 11:21

From today's DM:
Wynne Evans made 'repulsive' joke about my bald head says breast cancer survivor
Cath Jones, 51, said she was so mortified at the insensitive joke about her appearance that she stormed out of the black-tie charity event where Evans was a celebrity guest. And the dog grooming business owner said she has never forgiven the opera singer for humiliating her. The 'joke' came when Evans was jokingly flattering fellow celebrity guest Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen about his hair. Cath recalled: 'Evans commented about Lawrence's hair and said that some of us had had their hair especially done for the occasion. Then he said that some hadn't bothered and he turned and looked at me.' Evans has been under intense national scrutiny in the fallout from a row prompted by a crude remark he made at the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing live tour.

What a piece of shit.

Lottapianos · 30/01/2025 11:42

He sounds like one of those blokes who feels the need to be 'hilarious' all the time. This is bloody tiresome to be around, even apart from his revolting sexual comments and putting his hands on Katya where they weren't wanted. Absolutely no sympathy for him

OSU · 30/01/2025 13:19

Male dancers bully and demean female celebrity partners. Male celebrities demean and harass female dancers.

Male presenters found to make demeaning comments and harassing others. Or committing illegal offences. Always male.

Yet the TV bosses cannot seem to deal with this. The perception that the 'talent' is all important needs to be upended. They are just one cog in the machine. Stop paying them crazy amounts and kowtowing to them.
