This morning I was shopping, I saw a young woman who looked really well groomed & put together, as I passed her I said how glamorous she looked for so early in the morning. She looked surprised and said thanks. I smiled and kept going. About 30 seconds later she found me and said thank you that she really needed to hear that. She looked quite emotional. I told her she was very welcome.

I quite often compliment people I see in public if they have a pretty dress on or their hair looks great etc. I’m so glad I did today especially. A little thing can mean something to someone.

I hope you understand that not everyone welcomes unsolicited comments about their appearance.

A couple of days after my husband died, I went out shopping. I hadn't been out of the house in months as I was caring for him. I put on a brightly coloured skirt and a purple vest top with embellishments on, to try to cheer myself up. Two ladies, walking together, stopped me as I was walking to compliment me on my outfit. That really made my day and helped to lift my spirits.

How miserable can you get...

I find it bizarre that people would take offence at someone saying "I love the colour of your coat!" What would an inoffensive comment be?

About as miserable as you sound. You have no understanding or acceptance that people are different and that for some of us, random comments on appearance aren't welcome. There are usually reasons for that.

It's not an indictment of people who insist on giving them, they'll do what they want regardless and the recipients will cope but your insult to somebody who tells you that not everyone enjoys comments about their appearance does say a lot about you and it's not positive.

The flavour of this thread doesn't need to be 'you're with us or against us', people are more nuanced than that, otherwise we'd be 'the borg'. Live and let live.

But its not live and let live?
Its me centric people who have a weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth that another person has had the audacity to notice that they have hair, or shoes on, and that they are nice, and then spiral this into some sort of vicious attack.
It must be exhausting spending so much time centring yourself in other people's lives!

Fucking hell is there any need for this kind of carry on? No one is gnashing or wailing or being me centric. Sone people have just said they don't especially enjoy compliments. They've no doubt accepted them gracefully anyway but on a thread about compliments are going against the norm to say it wouldn't "make their day". Funny that you profess to enjoy spreading kindness but have been very rude and hurtful to strangers on here. It's very "you will react as I say". Reminds me of men who tell women to smile.

I always try and compliment someone if I’ve noticed their children have behaved well.

I wish I had the courage to tell them when they're not!
