What things are “very Mumsnet”

Lighthearted of course before anyone says otherwise.

I really enjoy the threads that remind you of things that are quintessentially MN but rarely come up in real life. They always throw up lots of quips that I’ve forgotten about.

Such as:

(24 year old man with 2 children and a mortgage cheats on his wife, wife posts about it)

MN: have you considered that he doesn’t yet have a fully developed frontal lobe and this may contribute to his impulsive behaviour?

Just seen a thread that reminded me of another one:

Getting your kids out of the car when you go to pay for fuel.

I live in an area where pay-at-pump is almost non-existent and you still never ever see children in the shop at a petrol station. Everyone just leaves them in the car.

Yeah I just read that thread, when my dad used to go and pay I’d always climb into the drivers seat and pretend to drive while I waited for him to return. I guess nowadays the parent is worried that in the thirty seconds it takes to pay, within full visibility of the car, that they will return to a burnt out shell of a car on bricks and the kids sold to a cleaning company because their little hands can get in all the small gaps, very mumsnet 😂

Spa days, I’m 42 and I’ve literally gone through my WHOLE life without anyone, female or male mentioning or going on a spa day. It seems to be trotted out on here for the patronising solution to absolutely everything that has annoyed someone. So when your husband has mildly upset you, storm out of your semi rural home and go on a spa day, I still have no clue what the hell!

‘Do something nice for yourself…have a bubble bath’

SirChenjins · 23/10/2024 11:39

'My DH works long full time hours, goes to the gym 5 nights a week and plays golf/football/cycles/insert other manly sport of choice here every Saturday. I would really love us to have some family time together'

The response is either - 'he has a busy job and needs to de-stress. Exercise should be a priority for everyone, I'd be furious if my DH tried to stop me from doing my exercise, stop moaning', or it's 'you need to book yourself into a spa/go to an art gallery/meet friends/insert other womanly activity of choice here every Sunday and leave him with the DC'.

When it's pointed out that neither give the OP her much-wanted family time there are huffs.

Massive pretend salaries and massive salads. Heaps of veg!

I do eat massive salads.

I don't have the matching massive salary though :)

People who ask for advice and/or thought and then, sometime abruptly, challenge everything that others suggest.

Even worse, ask for advice and then when given advice tell you that they've already tried it all. Didn't mention any of that in the OP though.

Having people think you are odd for admitting to liking sex!

A female who admits to liking sex is a bot.....clearly. Can't be real.

Men who would like to have more sex with their wife.......outrageous, non-understanding and selfish.

SirChenjins · 25/10/2024 14:55

Depends on the context of course.

SpiggingBelgium · 26/10/2024 11:40

Asking “Had drink been taken?” in threads about arguments or unpleasant scenes. It’s so over-formal (and reeks of judgement) - I just can’t imagine anyone saying it in real life.

Well, do they help around the house? Thats the first question that’s always asked….

StarlitBeauty · 26/10/2024 12:18

First wives lurking in the step-parenting board and telling them that they are all 'vile' 😆

Babadookinthewardrobe · 26/10/2024 12:31

DM, DP, DSS, DSD, DSIL, DF & STBXH coming to a BBQ empty-handed. What a bunch of CFs.

WTAF? 🤯

One thing that always astounds me on MN is how many people despise hot weather, and would much prefer a 12* grey day. I have never met anyone in real life who doesn't agree that it's so much nicer when it's warm and sunny. Even people who struggle in extreme heat still like summer days. In here, there are whole threads of people actively hating summer 🤷‍♀️

SirChenjins · 26/10/2024 20:19

This is so true @thenewaveragebear1983 absolutely no-one I know in RL loves the pouring rain, especially when it means that events are cancelled, trips rained off, crops are affected or transport delayed, but on MN there are posters who absolutely insist this this is the best type of weather we have. Weirdos.

SirChenjins · 26/10/2024 20:32

Oh, and ditto the endless darkness of short days and long nights in winter. Nobody I know is thrilled at the prospect of snuggles under blankets and months of hot chocolate.

Yes everyone seems to love autumn, I don't hate it but I don't start looking forward to it in August, in fact I whinge (a lot) about it getting dark early!

Mn is full of misanthropes and people who struggle socially and would prefer to be on their sofa in their pyjamas. Bad weather means cancelled outings, and winter means less pressure to leave the house. Bingo, from their POV.

Reading genuine posts that are worded like this actually make me cringe 🤢

Tiredalwaystired · 26/10/2024 23:28

Yep acronyms are so cliquey. Plus ambiguous. I read a whole thread thinking it was about a grandson when it was a godson.

DD - daughter or dog?

And SS is apparently a step son and not a Nazi paramilitary group. I was MOST confused on that occasion. Who knew..?

Kibble29 · 26/10/2024 23:41

Haha STBXH is a daft one in particular.

Can we give a shout-out to step-mums on this site?

”I’m a step-mum and bought my stepson a bar of chocolate today. It was nice and he said he enjoyed it.”

”omg what?! Did you check with his mum first? What if he was allergic? Does she allow processed sugar? He already has two parents, OP! Completely overstepped the mark there. Are you always this controlling?”

But think of all the puddles you can splash in and the bracing wind to clear your cobwebs and crack your lips. I mean who wouldn’t rather be soaking wet and shivering just so you can extra appreciate that cup of hot chocolate, instead of enjoying the warmth of a bit of sun. Only on MN 🥶

BunnyLake · 27/10/2024 07:21

DinahSlade · 22/10/2024 08:34

I find it odd on MN when posters have to announce/explain at the end of their post the reason why they had to edit the post "*edited for spelling mistake."

It doesn't really bother me but I wonder why they feel the need to do it? I see it a lot. I sometimes catch a spelling or grammatical error once I've pressed post and I edit it. Why should I need to explain, surely its obvious?

I also wonder why people say they’ve name changed in their OP. Maybe I’m missing something but what does it matter to other posters that they’ve changed their name?

tuvamoodyson · 27/10/2024 07:29

I think it’s so they can’t be linked to their other posts.

I’m still being thick lol because i don’t get why they’d be linked to their other posts if they’ve changed their name.

They would be linked if they DIDNT change their name. People could put two and two together and work out their identity.
