What things are “very Mumsnet”

Lighthearted of course before anyone says otherwise.

I really enjoy the threads that remind you of things that are quintessentially MN but rarely come up in real life. They always throw up lots of quips that I’ve forgotten about.

Such as:

(24 year old man with 2 children and a mortgage cheats on his wife, wife posts about it)

MN: have you considered that he doesn’t yet have a fully developed frontal lobe and this may contribute to his impulsive behaviour?

OP posts:

So many posters seem to take extreme positions on parenting. Either their DC are fed nothing but organic food made from scratch, drink only water/milk and are escorted to 'extra curricular activities' every evening and weekend, and given an allowance of £££ every week, and have their social lives arranged for them until they are 38. Or they are expected to do all their own washing from that age of 10, provided with alcohol for parties from about 14, encouraged to have boyfriends/girlfriends staying over as soon as they are 16, and as soon as they turn 18 they are expected to be totally self sufficient because they are adults.

Many Mumsnetters like to wash their underwear with their dishcloths and tea towels!

It goes in together in one wash here! We’re all fine (apart from the skin lesions)

Another thing that mumsnetters think is ok is for their other halves to go off on lads weekends or holidays, usually leaving them with very young babies. Not hobby or sports occasions but stag type dos when we all know what they get up to, because they don’t want to be the odd one out among their friends! However, the men do not want their other halves doing the same. Can’t think why!

Same, I separate into light and dark but bedding towels, cloths, clothes and undies etc go in the same wash, if they are similar colours

Not really light-hearted, but:

Every woman on MN who isn't married to the father of their DC gives DC their own surname.

Every woman I've met in real life who isn't married to the father of their DC gives DC their dad's surname.

DH has MIL's surname 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tea towels in with underwear! Clutches pearls. Very MN.

Everyone hoovers, sweeps and mops multiple times a day as well as cleans the bathroom(s) daily. This is on top of cooking 'from scratch' and their daily workout routine, not to mention their 12 hour a day very important job. But then they weep at the thought of 'life admin'

Moknicker · 22/10/2024 03:45

Everyone cleans their house before their cleaner gets there.

And they have time regularly post on MN to tell everyone how busy/ organised/ important they are!

If you’re a character in an Enid Blyton novel, maybe…

But at the other end of the scale my circle never ever use the c word (hate it so not using it here either) . I don’t deny that others do though…

Tiredalwaystired · 22/10/2024 08:03

Oh and it’s very Mumsnet to tell people they’re grown ups here and they can use it as much as they like here

I find it odd on MN when posters have to announce/explain at the end of their post the reason why they had to edit the post "*edited for spelling mistake."

It doesn't really bother me but I wonder why they feel the need to do it? I see it a lot. I sometimes catch a spelling or grammatical error once I've pressed post and I edit it. Why should I need to explain, surely its obvious?

So it’s obvious you aren’t editing to change the sense of your post. I sometimes do that if I’m midway through an argument with another poster!

I get this. There was a post changed recently to insert more detail. People were responding saying the OP explained at the outset. She hadn’t but edited afterwards.

Because on MN, they pick you up before you fall!

Threads like this 🙄

SirChenjins · 22/10/2024 21:59

And 🙄 from posters who could have simply scrolled on by

Crikeyalmighty · 22/10/2024 22:19

Lots of first time buyers- budget up to £750k

We are all completely 'unfashionable frumps ' if we dress mid range from M&S, Fat Face , Next etc - regardless of age/budget/job etc

The number of women here with £200k plus family incomes- I realise there are some yes, but the amount here seems abnormal relative to population

SatinHeart · 23/10/2024 09:14

Just seen a thread that reminded me of another one:

Getting your kids out of the car when you go to pay for fuel.

I live in an area where pay-at-pump is almost non-existent and you still never ever see children in the shop at a petrol station. Everyone just leaves them in the car.

cookiebee · 23/10/2024 09:19

Spa days, I’m 42 and I’ve literally gone through my WHOLE life without anyone, female or male mentioning or going on a spa day. It seems to be trotted out on here for the patronising solution to absolutely everything that has annoyed someone. So when your husband has mildly upset you, storm out of your semi rural home and go on a spa day, I still have no clue what the hell!

StarlightLady · 23/10/2024 09:59

People who ask for advice and/or thought and then, sometime abruptly, challenge everything that others suggest.

Someone I used to work with was run over on a petrol forecourt (he survived, with broken bones) - I always leave my children in the car.
