What things are “very Mumsnet”

Lighthearted of course before anyone says otherwise.

I really enjoy the threads that remind you of things that are quintessentially MN but rarely come up in real life. They always throw up lots of quips that I’ve forgotten about.

Such as:

(24 year old man with 2 children and a mortgage cheats on his wife, wife posts about it)

MN: have you considered that he doesn’t yet have a fully developed frontal lobe and this may contribute to his impulsive behaviour?

OP posts:
Tiredalwaystired · 27/10/2024 11:41

If they were that invested. Which in itself is very Mumsnet.

I’m still being thick lol because i don’t get why they’d be linked to their other posts if they’ve changed their name.

Basically, people name change when they post a new thread for a few reasons.

  1. So people can't go back through their old posts and drag stuff up to try to catch them out, with some kinda 'gotcha!' (Like they may have said they have 2 children under one name, and 3 children under another name. People do this so they are not so easily recognised by people, and they don't twig their 'regular' username.)

  2. So people in real life can't fish through their old posts and pick up something in their posts that identifies them in real life.

  3. Because if they DON'T say 'name changed for this' they will get the inevitable dreary trope that's trotted out on here... 'hmmm, interesting first post OP.' Wink

Ah I think it’s probably the third option that makes a lot of sense. I wouldn’t know if it’s a poster’s first post but I notice there are posters who seem much more familiar with the workings of MN than I am. I don’t usually notice people’s user names (unless they’re particularly obnoxious posters). I guess I’m a very surface user of MN.

Thank you for the explanation.

People say if they are a regular poster but have changed their name because otherwise they might get accused of being a troll. You get comments like "interesting first post OP" and similar useful comments.

(sorry just noticed someone else made the same point I'll shut up :) )

DM, DP, DSS, DSD, DSIL, DF & STBXH coming to a BBQ empty-handed. What a bunch of CFs.

WTAF?

Calling someone Hun as a put down. Thankfully I never hear hun in real life.

username3678 · 27/10/2024 18:20

The paranoia is off the scale.

I've been accused of being a man, being the person mentioned in an article and being a secret representative of a political party because I commented on a tweet.

If you deny the accusations, you're told that you're giving yourself away.

Tiredalwaystired · 28/10/2024 07:21

Someone asking a question and then having the AUDACITY not to update people on the outcome.

SpiggingBelgium · 28/10/2024 11:56

Assuming everyone lives in a house with a garden. Flats don’t exist, or are somewhere you would only live if you can’t afford a house in suburbia - no such thing as city centre living (or indeed much of London).

Well they really should. If they have posted on here asking for help and advice, and a bunch of people have taken the time out of their day to help - and be a listening and sympathetic ear, the least the OP can do is come back with an update.

Very rude, and very bad form not to.

very nosey to expect it.

Your anxiety being ‘through the roof’ and your ‘head being all over the place’

StarlightLady · 29/10/2024 08:33

Anyone who does not wear 100% cotton everything will die of thrush and go to hell🔥.

London seems to be a place of 2 extremes - half of MN can't compute there are theatres/museums/culture/restaurants/festivals/things to do and a diverse cross section of people outside London.....
...the other half can't go because they won't know how to use the tube and will be robbed and stabbed the moment they arrive....

StarlitBeauty · 29/10/2024 17:10

"Just leave him" is always the only solution to marital discord.

tuvamoodyson · 29/10/2024 17:40

Adults finding it extremely difficult to be able to make the tiniest of decisions without consulting MN.

’do these shoes go with this dress?’
’which coat is suitable for the school run in the rain?’
’what should I wear to a funeral?’
‘wedding invitation, would you go?’

How they hold down these 6 figure salaries in niche industries, I will never know!

Newname1989 · 29/10/2024 19:13

The number of people who have ‘unicorn’ full time jobs where they do a couple of hours work a day for 100 k salaries and explain they are paid for their skill set not hrs worked.

Kibble29 · 29/10/2024 21:33

The blanket “violence is never the answer” idea from people who would probably thank someone for punching them in the face.

Like it or not, sometimes you have no other choice. Why pretend that it’s never the solution?

It's scary how often I read a dilemma on MN and long to say, “Just punch them in the face”.

sharpclawedkitten · 30/10/2024 16:29

Just now, I saw a post where someone said they had a genius IQ and good emotional intelligence. This was in response to someone saying that their overgeneralisation about millennials was a bit dim.

It wins MN today!

There was a thread somewhere (in Chat?) today about someone being on holiday in Adelaide and not liking it It was the most bizarre thread and the weirdest thing to come onto MN to talk about!

Though to be fair I might look for advice about what to wear to a funeral as well. I did poke around MN to find advice about what to wear for a graduation, although I didn't post myself.

Answer: anything! At my son's graduation people were wearing dresses, trouser suits, skirts, even jeans! (I wore a dress from Seasalt).

Crikeyalmighty · 30/10/2024 18:53

@Newname1989 in fairness there are actually some jobs like that where you effectively get paid ( and often salary or a retainer) for your contacts or as an example your ability to deal close and these pay very well indeed- but you may work 6 hours some days and 2 others - but still get a full time salary - chances are to get to that level though at some point you have worked your arse off and very long days
