Told at New Look they "don't do paper receipts"

Anyone else had this?
I was in New Look in the trafford centre today and was asked for my email address for the receipt (standard practice now I know)
I said no thank you I would prefer a paper receipt (standard acceptable reply) and the cashier said no they dont do paper receipts. I said I wasn't going to give her my email address and after a bit of this back and forth and a short stand off she eventually produced a receipt from under the counter.

Is this what New Look staff are asking of their staff now? To lie in order to harvest personal information?
It was really uncomfortable for both me and the poor NMW cashier and has made me less inclined to want to shop there again.

Is that not against gdpr?

It's in the Ts and Cs which no one reads.

schloss · 29/09/2024 23:10

"Sorry I do not have a mobile or pc, so no email address"

Get very strange, almost pitiful looks from many, but always produces a paper receipt!

fallenbranches · 29/09/2024 23:12

I worked in retail for a while and I understand the annoyance, especially for people who don't have emails or have been subjected to a lot of spam. However, all retailers should give every customer the option to choose either receipt only and then ask to opt out of marketing etc...we were always told this was mandatory to ask. If someone chose receipt only then by law they could not receive any other marketing emails apart from the receipt as it would be in serious breach of GDPR. Also, please remember it's not the sales people or cashiers fault. These decisions are made from the top and where I worked it was a policy to save massive amounts of paper due to the pressures of having more sustainable practices and to save costs.

MattBerningerstrophywife · 29/09/2024 23:14

I had that the other day where the lady on the till insisted that she needed my email address (think it was curry’s). I told her that she really didn’t. She gave me the receipt.

T4phage · 29/09/2024 23:14

Ds works in marketing. You'd be surprised what goes on with people's data and companies are making a lot of money from it.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 29/09/2024 23:17

OP I had the exact same experience in TC New Look a few months ago.
The annoying thing for me was that they weren't upfront about it. I'd already paid for the item and it was just presented like fait accompli. Like you, I also refused and said I would only accept a paper copy. I had to stand my ground as they wouldn't back down.
For me, the receipts get lost in the emails, and when you type in the search bar to find them - they never show! Also, I don't know about others - but my signal is awful everywhere. Even WiFi is unreliable. I'm honestly fed up with technology and although I embraced it for years, the closer I get to 40, the more I feel like rebelling against it because things are so god damn awful!
I had to pay for my parking on an app last week - the bloody car park had no signal in it! It was a nightmare to do! No other options available! Who puts an app only car park where there is no data signal?!
Don't get me started on phone storage being too full to download all these apps. And battery life being so awful on phones! Mine is a bloody Samsung s23, just over a year old ffs!
So yeah. It's not for me. I keep all my paper receipts nice and organised where I can access them.

@StMarieforme No, you're not getting money "off". The non-loyalty card price is a tax the shops are putting on those of us who refuse to sign up for their blasted loyalty cards. You do know the supermarkets make thousands by selling on the data from these "loyalty cards", don't you?

The data they sell isn't personal data though. It's stuff like:

'People who buy crumpets often have honey in their basket at the same time'
Or
'On Fridays people are more likely to buy crisps with beer, but on Wednesdays they have crisps and Coke'
Or
'Sales of imperial leather shower gel have declined and the people that used to buy it are now buying Radox'
Or
'Butter is most likely to be bought by women aged 35-50, whilst Stork is typically bought by men aged 18-25'

Companies (the manufacturers of all these products, who buy the data) use it to plan, to grow their share of market, and to understand shopper behaviour. They don't have access to any of the personal (identifiable) information attached to it.

I had a dilemma with this before because a few months ago I spent over £200 at New Look, was told no paper receipts, gave my email, had no signal in shop and checked when I got home; they must've typed it in wrong because I never received it. What would have happened if I needed to return something?

Yeah this is my argument with email receipts - I much prefer a paper one that I can produce from my purse in seconds rather than an email that I can't find or was was never sent in the first place

GogAndMagog · 29/09/2024 23:19

I always say [email protected]

But always get a paper receipt in case I need to take something back!

I hate tills that ask do you want a receipt and give you five seconds to respond whilst you are still packing your bag. I had this at WHSmith, didn't press yes in time and then got challenged by a security guard.

BrieHugger · 29/09/2024 23:19

Both New Looks (as well as H&M) near me have shite internet reception. I can never get into the app to use discount codes, or to open a digital receipt in my emails.

So unless they change that, I’ll continue to ask for a paper receipt.

Username198800 · 29/09/2024 23:20

It's a good point what leg do you have to stand on if you provide an email address in good faith and they type your name wrong Stephanie.greene instead of Stefanie.green how can you prove it?

This isn't true as how do you think targeted marketing works? Names aren't involved, but the marketing companies still know which demographic you belong to etc.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/09/2024 23:21

I’m fine with email receipts but have a surname that people invariably spell wrongly, even if I spell it to them, so often end up with no receipt. (I know I could set up a new address with a different name just for shopping.) I mainly shop online and would click and collect in eg New Look for this reason.

PadstowGirl · 29/09/2024 23:28

I hate this, superdrug and River Island do this too. Not to mention the ridiculous queues in H and M as the staff try to sign up everyone for loyalty cards.
I refused in River Island as I've had to return things previously and sometimes emails don't come through. The cashier was really rude and pointed out that I'm destroying the environment (with my 3" slip of paper).

Yes this happened to my friend and she did need to return the item.

It was the same reason as yours - incorrect email address typed in and there was no signal so she didn't know it hadn't turned up. It's a bloody scam!!

T4phage · 29/09/2024 23:31

Not to mention all the people stood behind you earwigging to hear the personal details you're handing out. Creepy men anyone?

76evie · 29/09/2024 23:32

Same happened to me at New Look, asked for email for receipt and I said I just want a paper receipt like I always do but this time she said I can’t give you a paper one. Told her I don’t want to give my email out, she said I can do you an email one and a paper one but can’t do paper only. I stood my ground and said I just want a paper one, she stared at me for a short while before producing a paper one from under the counter and handing me it. She seemed might pissed off.

personally I don’t want an email receipt incase it doesn’t come through, happened to me a few years ago in H Samuel, it never came through so presumably they typed it in wrong. Have stuck with paper ever since.

neilyoungismyhero · 29/09/2024 23:32

ObliviousCoalmine · 29/09/2024 22:19

Yes exactly. Just have a burner email address for them, it's not really anything to get worked up about.

Yes, but if you don't get a receipt you can't take the item back can you?

TroysMammy · 29/09/2024 23:36

I'm tempted to get an email address just for receipts and when asked at the till for it I can gleefully say notanothersoddingshopthatusesemailreceipts etc etc.

Farting · 29/09/2024 22:02

When they abolish cash they’ll track everything anyway, it’s just one step closer to that.

If and when they totally abolish cash, the hackers and criminals will be having a field day stealing us all blind and the only one at fault will be ourselves.

I like the idea of a very very long complicated email address which takes an age to type

itsmylife7 · 29/09/2024 23:39

I just look at them blankly and say
" whats an email " 😃
they just do paper receipt then.

nobodygoes · 29/09/2024 23:39

I had a nightmare in new look a while ago, I had got a load of stuff for my dd and I wasn't 100% sure about sizes and when I was about to leave the shopping centre I realised I still hadn't received an email. Went back to new look and it turned out they had entered my email wrong and I had to wait an age on the manager hunting down my transaction on their system. Now I always ask to check they have the right email address entered.

Fighting against everything? You and whose army as my Dad would say.

I'm not 'blindly' accepting anything. I caught a train today and love being able to buy the ticket on my phone prior to travelling, no wasted paper and took nanoseconds. Same with the carpark, I sat in the car and it picked up which car park I was in and it was paid for with a swipe of the bar. I just don't get why you'd want to fight all that efficiency??

You are a dinosaur and I'm baffled .

Next time they try to shame you like that, point out it’s far better to get a one off receipt than have your details exist on a customer database, ever increasing in size, sat on a server that is online 24/7 for an indefinite period of time 😁
