Told at New Look they "don't do paper receipts"

Anyone else had this?
I was in New Look in the trafford centre today and was asked for my email address for the receipt (standard practice now I know)
I said no thank you I would prefer a paper receipt (standard acceptable reply) and the cashier said no they dont do paper receipts. I said I wasn't going to give her my email address and after a bit of this back and forth and a short stand off she eventually produced a receipt from under the counter.

Is this what New Look staff are asking of their staff now? To lie in order to harvest personal information?
It was really uncomfortable for both me and the poor NMW cashier and has made me less inclined to want to shop there again.

“My email address? What’s that, then?”

Every time.

”You can send messages on the internet? Since when? No one told me..!”

Have some fun with it.

Lol love this

I remember once a worker in a shop asked for my email and when I said I wanted a paper receipt they said something like "you DO know that paper receipts can fade quickly", to which I explained I'd just take a photo of it and save it to my online drive, so no need for me to give them my email.

Arafon · 30/09/2024 03:23

Next made an error on a return I made from the Directory to store once, they keyed in the wrong account no. Luckily I had a paper receipt as that was the only proof I had to get my money refunded, I didn't get any emails about the return as they had the wrong account no. against the item. I always get a paper receipt there now.

Arafon · 30/09/2024 03:24

If the assistant mistypes the email address you are not going to get a receipt are you

coxesorangepippin · 30/09/2024 03:26

Just say you don't have email

That'll sort em

UserNameOfShame · 30/09/2024 04:09

I did really feel for the cashier, she looked like she was going to cry as she handed over the receipt. I did say to her that I know it's not her fault but it's not on.

It was the fact that NL are actively encouraging their staff to lie to customers faces that bothers me the most. Then when those poor staff get caught in the lie it must make them feel like shit.

Email addresses are free and you can have as many as you like. Just make one solely for receipts/rewards programs and be done with it.

If your regular email is janeparker97@ whatever then make one called janeparker97receipts (or janeparker97shopping or janeparker97junk or janeparkergoespaperless). Paper receipts are wasteful and I’m sure lots of places will do away with them in the next few years. Plus that way if you need to find anything it’s all neatly arranged by date/time in an inbox that only has your spending and receipts in it.

Edited to add: If she looked like she was going to cry, it’s probably because she was either going to be penalised or had just lost an incentive because of your email refusal. Stores track email capture and require employees to keep it above a certain percentage. They may also offer a reward for keeping it at 95% or 100% or whatever the daily goal is.

itsgettingweird · 30/09/2024 04:32

I always say no Thankyou I'll have a paper receipt.

When a shop refused o asked for a refund then.

They said "no - because you don't have a receipt" Hmm

My reply was "give me one then".

Eventually I got a receipt and I then returned the items anyway - because I was in a point proving mood 😂

I don't want another email address. I wanted a paper receipt.

I feel sorry for the cashier but her targets are not my problem. New Look are at fault and need to sort it out.

I thought New Look were struggling, they closed down the store in our very nice mall where there are lots of clothes shops, surely they don't want to lose anymore customers.

I actually find it really annoying, anything really spendy I order online anyway, and they come with invoices/ normal acknowledgements.

Most of the other things are just an attempt at data capture. Added to which it’s annoyingly time-consuming at the till, to spell out my non-Anglo name. I now just say no ta unless it’s a benefit for me.

You don't have to use your name or anything identifying in an email address.

As others have said, set up a generic email address for all this stuff.

garlictwist · 30/09/2024 04:58

It's not really harvesting data though,it's an email address that tells them nothing about you personally. Legally they are not allowed to email you anything other than te receipt and can't use it to sign you up to marketing emails.

If that's true why are they so desperate to get people to give them the email addresses?
And I don't believe it's anything to do with saving the planet.

Arafon · 30/09/2024 06:14

Emails don't save the planet anyway, they are not energy free, probably worse than a small paper receipt

AutumnComing2 · 30/09/2024 06:21

We stopped shopping in person at our local new look because the lady on the till is SO aggressive over providing a paper receipt- her rudeness was horrid and after two visits experiencing her we just shop online now. Even my 12yr won’t go in there now.

Theunamedcat · 30/09/2024 06:36

Personally I resent paying a convenience charge to pay for my parking via app that I downloaded and use rather than paying in cash that they have to pay someone to empty surely that is more expensive to manage?

rainfallpurevividcat · 30/09/2024 06:45

What is annoying is to be asked for your email even when you are happy to be on their mailing list and are already on it. So there is no benefit as it still takes ages tapping in your details.

Strictlymad · 30/09/2024 06:47

I refuse the email too, I’m loving some of the responses! Especially the Gdpr one I might adopt it! I can’t stand them wanting name and address when you make a return, quite happy to take my money in a nano second, but when I returning a dress delivered with a huge hole in it want to make me wait 5 working days and need to now the colour f my knickers

rainfallpurevividcat · 30/09/2024 06:47

Another thing that is crap and possibly illegal is on some sites it asks you to accept cookies or say no "and pay!" That's not how GDPR works.

EveryDayisFriday · 30/09/2024 07:16

Big data is big business. I ask for a paper receipt every time, don't care how outdated it is. I do have a spammy email address if absolutely necessary with the words spam and junk in the title. I refuse to give any other personal information at the till, it's not their legal right to know those things from their customers. I don't know their data protection policy and whether they sell the data on.

@Stagsflying "i caught a train today and love being able to buy the ticket on my phone prior to travelling, no wasted paper and took nanoseconds. "

That's all well and good until your phone runs out of battery or stops working for some reason or it's lost or stolen. And then you have no ticket and all the associated stress and hassle that comes with that.

I'll keep my paper ticket thank you.

Exactly. I was meeting dd at the O2 for a gig recently and got very stressed as I couldn't get a signal to bring up my Ticketmaster ticket on my phone, or to call dd to let her know what was going on. Took an age to eventually get helped to log in to the O2 WiFi. So much can go wrong when you're solely relying on your phone. I always print out train tickets beforehand.

GeminiGiggles · 30/09/2024 07:35

Just from the pov of a retail worker - we hate asking as much as you hate being asked I promise you but the berating we get over it is crazy.

We have targets to hit for both the receipt and the opt in for mailing list. If we don't meet it there's extra training and in extreme cases I've seen disciplinaries handed out.

So we get moaned at from ends the customer and the employer for something that we hate too.

mitogoshigg · 30/09/2024 07:38

If they ask just say "I don't have email " it flummoxes anyone under 40, sometimes they need their manager as they don't know how to deal with it but they have to give you a paper receipt. There is no legal obligation to have email

Lovelysummerdays · 30/09/2024 07:43

I’m normally a bit sniffy about stuff like this . However I got emailed a receipt in Halfords and then when a piece broke in my hand six weeks later it made for an easy exchange, I’d absolutely of discarded paper receipts by that time. I’ve opened a spare email for receipts for all stuff electric/ under guarantee or with a warranty.

Tumbleweed101 · 30/09/2024 07:47

My email has a fairly straightforward normal word in it yet the number of people who can't spell it is amazing. I never realised this until they started asking for email addresses. I'd imagine someone who suffers from dyslexia or similar must find this part of the job a nightmare.
