Saddest songs?

Crying my way through Don McLean's The Grave and wondered what songs make you absolutely sob?
No particular emotional connection to the song either other than it was on a CD when I was younger, but the other songs on the album don't make me cry - it's just a genuinely heartbreaking song

Moonriver
Somewhere west side story
Bright eyes
Have I told you lately that I love you

Yes to Moon River. For two reasons, one being that I have a great picture of my late mother sitting on a rock by Moon River in Canada, her homeland. I have a picture of me there too. Secondly, I was on holiday with DH in Croatia and our hotel dining room was next to the hotel function room. There was a wedding and this was their first dance. The line "two drifters off to see the world, there's such a lot of world to see..." just hit a nerve and I snivelled through the rest of my dinner 🥲 We have since seen such a lot of [the] world.

Wind beneath my wings gets me everytime.

Clawdy · 19/09/2024 08:16

I Get Along Without You Very Well. The last line : "Except perhaps in Spring.....But I should never think of Spring.....For that would surely break my heart in two."

ProsperoBloom · 19/09/2024 08:59

Songs that always make me feel emotional -

Don’t Give Up - Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush
Vincent (Starry Starry Night) - Don McLean
‘this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you’ gets me every time.

The Night We Met - Lord Huron
500 Miles - Joan Baez version
Flowers and Football Tops - Glasvegas
Awake - Josh Groban (picked it for my dads funeral)
How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - Al Green ( dad picked this for his funeral)
Wonderful Life - Black
Return To Innocence - Enigma
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley version
Everybody Hurts - REM
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack

For some reason Canon In D by Pachelbel always makes me feel incredibly sad. It’s not even a sad song but it just does something to me.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 19/09/2024 10:00

Gladys Knight's "On the Radio" but that's because I always link it with the movie "Foxes" which used it as the theme.

Puff the Magic Dragon. I can’t sing it either.

Plus the theme tune for The Littlest Hobo, Maybe Tomorrow - even reading the lyrics without the music gets me!

Nobody's Child. About an orphan who is blind and no-one wants to adop him

Nobody's Child gets me too. And also The Bonnie Lass O' Fyvie, even while I'm thinking, "Good girl, holding on to your boundaries."

For a Friend by The Communards. It's beautiful and makes me cry. It's dedicated to the chap in Pride. He was called Mark something, and he died of AIDS. When I listen to it, I think of all the men who died a shitty death with awful stigma and can't believe it.

My friend in the 80s Chris, died of Aids...he "went home to die". He lost his partner to Aids.
I was a student nurse and lived next door to him; he was a charge nurse in theatres.
He introduced me to opera.
We used to read the librettos and listen to Maria Callas and drink Tio Pepe.
I miss him so, so much.

salsmum · 20/09/2024 03:26

Bring him home from le Mis

topflower123 · 20/09/2024 04:17

Slipping Through My Fingers, by ABBA! I listened to it on my DC1's first day of school and had a mini-breakdown 😂

Also love Go Easy On Me, by Adele, and This Woman's Work, which made me cry on the bus.

Robin60 · 20/09/2024 17:17

The one that gets me every time is Time after Time by Cyndi Lauper, just beautiful
