Crying my way through Don McLean's The Grave and wondered what songs make you absolutely sob?
No particular emotional connection to the song either other than it was on a CD when I was younger, but the other songs on the album don't make me cry - it's just a genuinely heartbreaking song

"And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by the Pogues.

Also another vote for "This Woman's Work" (although I think she got better and went home, per video)

Seriously79 · 17/09/2024 18:32

In the arms of the angels Sarah Mclachlan

Riapia · 17/09/2024 18:42

Empty chairs. Don McLean.

Violetparis · 17/09/2024 18:42

Another vote for Seasons In The Sun, as a child I knew a girl called Michelle who died of cancer aged 7 or 8 and I always think of her when I hear this song, I hate it but thankfully don't hear it much now. Everybody Hurts by REM is another sad song though I like it.

SewingBees · 17/09/2024 18:46

How long will I love you - Ellie Goulding. I heard it on the radio on my first birthday after my dad died and for some reason it really got to me.

Wind beneath my wings, just because of the association with Beaches.

I had this at my Dad's funeral. It didn't occur to me as one to cry to until I dreamt the night before his service that it was played as the last song. So I called the celebrant and asked her to change what I'd previously chosen.

"This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you" ❤️

Aurora2023

that line is so beautiful it says so much, your post has made me feel emotional what a lovely relationship you appear to have had

bryceQ · 17/09/2024 18:47

I wasn't expecting that

I can't not cry to that!!!

Dazedandconfusedma · 17/09/2024 18:54

Hope there’s someone by Anohi and the Johnson’s makes me cry every time. such a gorgeous song. I feel it won’t be loved on mumsnet however as the lead singer is trans. She sings lots of beautiful and sad songs about being trans.

Lansonmaid · 17/09/2024 18:56

Two songs by a folk singer called Eric Bogle, both about the First World War - they really bring home the pity of war

'And the bands played Waltzing Matilda'
'No Mans Land'

Fields of Gold, sung by Eva Cassidy - it was played at my dads funeral and I can't listen to it without getting a huge lump in my throat

Those are the days of our lives - Queen. The video with Freddie looking so ill but singing so beautifully gets me

Aurora2023 · 17/09/2024 18:57

@HRTQueen thank you ❤️. We had our moments, as we all do with parents - but he had the purest soul and that line said it all x

This woman’s work - Kate Bush

it makes me ugly cry.

100% agree with this, convulsive crying

Drivingoverlemons · 17/09/2024 19:05

Agree with Wing Beneath my Wings! 😢

Dear Theodosia from the Hamilton soundtrack gets me every time. There's a line about his father not being around so he will make sure he is for his daughter that makes me think of my DH and the tears start flowing!

I find it extra sad because in reality Hamilton and Burr outlived the babies they are singing to in this song. So makes it feel very bittersweet when they are singing about laying a strong foundation and a better world to ‘pass on’ to them.

Agree with those saying Kate Bush & This woman's work.

Also this song

The Cocteau Twins did a fantastic version of a song called another day, on this mortal. Coil album which is so haunting, this was covered by Kate bush and Peter Gabriel as well. So moving and worth checking out if this connects with you ✅

raspberryripplecheesecake · 17/09/2024 19:10

Daniel, Elton John

redtrain123 · 17/09/2024 19:10

‘ Sorry, Love Daddy’ - Brian Mcfadden

  • The words just get to me.
Mistymorin · 17/09/2024 19:16

Vincent- Don McLean
The living years- Mike & The Mechanics
and more recently
Monsters - James Blunt

LyndaSnellsSniff · 17/09/2024 19:22

So many I agree with! Especially Song To The Siren and Another Day by This Mortal Coil. Along with This Woman's Work, I get weepy at Hello Earth and Moments Of Pleasure by Kate Bush.
In This Shirt by The Irrepressibles floors me too.
Outro by M83
Bridge Over Troubled Water. A cliche but the "Sail on silver girl, sail on by. Your time has come to shine" line is do poignant.
Classical music wise... Elgar's Nimrod is gut wrenching.
The Shepherd's Farewell by Berlioz is a hauntingly beautiful Christmas carol.

Runningupthecurtains · 17/09/2024 19:23

If we are admitted to listening to James Blunt 'The girl that never was' has me in bits every bloody time. 💔

goestheweasel · 17/09/2024 19:29

Whiskey Lullaby is pretty devastating!

IBlameTheDog · 17/09/2024 19:30

You'll Never Walk Alone for me.

It was adopted by Bradford City after the fire disaster. A boy in my class died at the age of 11 along with his 13 year old brother and his dad. We had an assembly for his mum and sister and an older girl sang this as a solo. It will forever make me think about that poor family.

Absolutely heartbreaking.

ChannelLightVessel · 17/09/2024 19:33

It’s Quiet Uptown - Hamilton soundtrack
Kindertotenlieder - Mahler

Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone again.

I always thought it was quite a fun little song, until I was sitting in my car and it came on and I listened to the lyrics.

The last verse makes me think of my Mom when my Dad died.

I can't listen to it at all now 😓

Yes, I've heard it described as one of the darkest pop songs.

MsAWK · 17/09/2024 19:43

Assemblage 23 - Old.

Danikm151 · 17/09/2024 19:46
