Crying my way through Don McLean's The Grave and wondered what songs make you absolutely sob?
No particular emotional connection to the song either other than it was on a CD when I was younger, but the other songs on the album don't make me cry - it's just a genuinely heartbreaking song

Into My Arms - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Oh gosh OP I hadn't heard that Don Maclean song so just gave it a listen. I was feeling pretty low today anyway but that was really desperately sad.

Some one mentioned Tracy Chapman up thread. I find her song Behind the Wall incredibly moving. It's portrayal of domestic violence is just so evocative.

No Frontiers by The Corrs (although I think it's a cover)

Supermarket flowers by Ed Sheeran

The show must go on by Queen, because Freddie was dying. Must have been so hard for him to sing it.

Travelin' soldier by the Dixie Chicks

Honey - Bobby Goldsboro
Ebony Eyes - Everly Brothers

Three to begin with. I have so many, sometimes they sound cheery, but then you read the lyrics and see it’s just a pretence.

Slipping Through My Fingers

I was just about to say that. I used to associate it with my darling dad moving away when he got remarried but now I have 2 dds who are growing up! Couldn't believe it when that bloody song popped up in Mamma Mia at the cinema with no bloody warning!

EngineEngineNumber9 · 17/09/2024 16:05

This woman’s work - Kate Bush

it makes me ugly cry.

I came here to say this. It makes me pour tears.

When she says ' I should be crying but I just can't let it show' '

Some things I’ll never know by Teddy Swims

TeamPolin · 17/09/2024 16:15

These are the Day of our Lives by Queen. Freddie Mercury's swan song. And also released around the time my Dad died so can't listen to it within full-on ugly sobbing.

hereismydog · 17/09/2024 16:17

Top of the World - The Chicks

Baby Mine - Betty Noyes (from Dumbo 😭)

Hear You Me - Jimmy Eat World (one of my favourite songs, but the meaning behind it is very sad)

Slipped Away - Avril Lavigne

SO many songs make me cry, and this list could easily hold hundreds of songs, but those are the first ones that spring to mind.

SleepyTraveller · 17/09/2024 16:20

I saw the thread title and immediately thought of The Grave. I'm right with you, OP

Danascully2 · 17/09/2024 16:23

Sacrifice by Elton John. I don't know the lyrics so am not actually sure what it's about but there's something about the tune that just sets me off.
Also tears in heaven as for a pp.
And the slow movement of saint-saen (spelling?) organ symphony.
