Saddest songs?

Crying my way through Don McLean's The Grave and wondered what songs make you absolutely sob?
No particular emotional connection to the song either other than it was on a CD when I was younger, but the other songs on the album don't make me cry - it's just a genuinely heartbreaking song

Mike and the mechanics.....the living years. It came out just after my grandad died. The line "I wasn't there that morning, when my father passed away" always gets me. My dad wasn't around much as a child, spent a lot of time with my nan and Gramps.

MyNamesGaryAndImAddictedToChips · 17/09/2024 17:33

Please Don't Go by Stephanie Rainey. Take my advice and don't watch it on YT.

Live With Me by Massive Attack. Beautiful, and sad song about unrequited love.

Portland Maine by Donovan Wood.

Jealous by Labyrinth.

The one that always gets me though is Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen.

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 17/09/2024 17:36

Echoing others totally agree with many...
Dance with my Father
Supermarket flowers
Songbird
Dancing on my Own
edit. Added Jealous As above. Beautiful song

Every single time 😢

AutumnLeaves1990 · 17/09/2024 17:37

A new one "Die with a smile" by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. The line "Wherever you go I will follow, nobody's promised tomorrow". Very apt for my beautiful dog that was PTS nearly a
month ago. She was always by my side 😭

Victims by culture club
Bright eyes
This woman's work
Starmaker by the kids from fame
Black beauty theme tune

😭😭😭

Vincent by Don McLean

he is written some really beautiful songs

I had this at my Dad's funeral. It didn't occur to me as one to cry to until I dreamt the night before his service that it was played as the last song. So I called the celebrant and asked her to change what I'd previously chosen.

"This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you" ❤️

A Winter's Tale-David Essex

That was played at my dad's funeral. Beautiful song & played a lot at Christmas so I prepare myself!

CherryBlo · 17/09/2024 18:01

Oh I thought of a couple more
Grace Petrie, This House. Generally sad as a song about loss of an unspecified man, more sad after I read it was supposed to be about an old man losing his male partner and not being able to be openly gay, almost even to himself, and the pain of losing something you were never allowed to quite put a name to.

And Streets of London.

Also yes to whoever said Vincent, Don McLean really knows how to deliver an emotional gut punch

Dear Mr President by Pink. The lyrics are so powerful. Always makes me 😢

Sourisblanche · 17/09/2024 18:08

The music score from Out of Africa.

LoveTheProms · 17/09/2024 18:09

Dance with my father as others have said. Has me bawling every single time.

This is a bit of a weird one but " this is how it feels to be lonely" gets me choked up.

Bridge over troubled water

Drivingoverlemons · 17/09/2024 18:13

There is a song on a record my Dad had by Harvey Andrews called Margarita that always used to make me bawl.

Also, Pentangle Maid that’s Deep in Love I find really haunting.

Luca by Suzanne Vega.

Also agree with
Tears in Heaven, Clapton
James Taylor, Fire and Rain
Vincent
Streets of London

Spanglybangles · 17/09/2024 18:13

Don’t Cry - Guns n Roses
Scarlet Ribbons - Sinèad O’Connor version
The Parting Glass - Ed Sheeran version
Wide Open Spaces - The Chicks
She Moved through the fair - Sinèad O’Connor version

There are definitely others though.

Runningupthecurtains · 17/09/2024 18:17

Do you know that it's a cover? The original by the Waterboys is quite jaunty but they do a fantastic stripped back live version gets me every time

Fly by Celine Dion. It's about the death of her neice. It's beautiful but makes me sad every time.

Margarita45 · 17/09/2024 18:23

Auld Lang Syne every single year - no idea why 😂
