What foods are you obsessed with at the moment?

I go through phases of being obsessed with particular foods - sometimes whole meals and other times just ingredients.

Right now, I'm obsessed with basil. I'll eat anything with basil on or it in, and I like randomly chewing on basil leaves while I'm pottering in the kitchen.

I'm also obsessed with alioli. Anything that can be dipped in alioli, will be.

I bought some linseeds at the weekend for a recipe and then read about sprinkling them on to yogurt. Linseeds in strawberry yogurt is now fully lodged in my brain and I'm genuinely looking forward to stopping by the shop tomorrow to buy some yogurt.

What's floating your boat at the minute?

Thin crumpets (or Crumpet Thins - which is a phrase I hate!) with salt-crystal butter.

Mammma91 · 09/09/2024 12:39

Cream cheese bagel - would be nice with some basil. I usually add bacon, lettuce, a sprinkle of cheese and a small amount of cheese sauce. So tasty and nice and filling 😋

Pilotingmyownlife · 09/09/2024 12:40

Seeded bread with tinned tomatoes on.

AHFBridport · 09/09/2024 12:41

Just had some M&S mushroom pate on poppy seed rolls, god, it's glorious.

ButterAsADip · 09/09/2024 12:41

Unearthed cream-cheese-stuffed green chillies. I am not a chilli person at all but omg I could easily eat 2 pots of those.

ButterAsADip · 09/09/2024 12:43

In fact now I’m pissed off that I didn’t order any in my groceries which are arriving any minute 😤

Olika · 09/09/2024 12:43

Chicken Caesar bagel from a nearby bakery.

loropianalover · 09/09/2024 12:43

I’m like this too, completely fixate on things. My last one was mac & cheese but I’m completely gone off it now, it turns my stomach! A few months ago I was making it by the tray.

A new obsession will roll around soon I’m sure…

squeakandbubble · 09/09/2024 12:44

I have an annoying one at the moment, it’s onigiri 😂 no where nearby sells it and sushi rice is a faff to make

amoreoamicizia · 09/09/2024 12:45

M&S cheese clouds (the version with chilli is my favourite). Very expensive for how many you get but totally delicious and addictive!

Wineandcupcakes · 09/09/2024 12:46

Nduja. Nduja pasta to be precise. Love it. Would slather Nduja on everything if I could.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 09/09/2024 12:47

Current quick WFH lunch
Half a pack of microwave veg rice, crack an egg into it, nuke for a minute, stir in a splash of soy sauce. I'm sick of wraps and sandwiches!

Davros · 09/09/2024 12:50

M&S smoked salmon pate

Cerialkiller · 09/09/2024 12:51

Sainsburies chicken pakora, surprisingly spicy and they've been in every shop since we discovered them.

I'm currently exploring very dark chocolates of various types

After years of dry felafel even from Turkish restaurants, i found a place on a local market that makes and fries them fresh in from of you. They are bright green in the middle from fresh herbs, crunchy on the outside and so moist on the inside. Bit of a revelation, I'm now on the hunt for a recipe to make myself.

I didn't realise how terrible fajita we had here until I ate at a mexican restaurant in California. Staggered by the difference and have been seeking ways of improving my mexican food every since. I've got salsa down, making it at home is a quick improvement over shop bought and it only takes a minute. Surprisingly simple.

Turnitoffnonagain · 09/09/2024 12:52

Yes, If it's the roast mushroom pate from M&S I love that too, it's delicious.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 09/09/2024 12:53

Miso butter on roasted green leafy vegetables like kale or savoy cabbage

EveryKneeShallBow · 09/09/2024 12:53

Nduja. Nduja pasta to be precise. Love it. Would slather Nduja on everything if I could.

Nduja paste on celery sticks is awesome.

Domoda · 09/09/2024 12:55

Kimchi cheese on toast, yum

Limth · 09/09/2024 12:56

@Cerialkiller Fuck me, those falafels sound amazing.

Thanks for all your responses. I worried a bit that responses would come back:
"Could you be pregnant?"
"Are you neuro-diverse?"
"Too much basil gives you [insert terrible Medieval disease]"
"Doesn't your husband mind your stinky garlic breath"

But I'm pleased you're all weird food obsessives too.

Itsu noodle cups 😳

Cerialkiller · 09/09/2024 13:01

Come to Cambridge market, you can find them at a little turkish stall that sells wraps and salads with halloumi and hummus etc, try some op!!

Red cabbage. I braise it in sugar and vinegar, stir fry it, make red slaw etc.

I'm having a similar moment with broccoli. I never boil it any more what a waste. Roast it, stir fry it, pan fry with oil and garlic.

KohlaParasaurus · 09/09/2024 13:05

Caramelised onions. And if money was no object I could develop a serious smoked duck habit.

RuggedHairyTortoise · 09/09/2024 13:05

For a few months now I have been making a paste of olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, sweet paprika, turmeric, cinammon and honey and smearing it all over chicken thighs then roasting them.

Limth · 09/09/2024 13:05

@Cerialkiller I'm based in Yorkshire so its quite a long way to go for a falafel. If the stall owners have an online shop, I'd definitely order from there. I love falafel but they're always so so dry 😩

I've been obsessively making and eating the same work week lunch recently, it's more of a rough blueprint than a recipe - a bowl of rice with a scoop of kimchi, whatever veg I can find (cucumber and avocado is nice) with pretty much any protein and a pack of seasoned seaweed from the Korean supermarket. You can use the seaweed sheets to make little bites with a bit of rice and toppings as you eat, like deconstructed sushi, and it's great.
