What foods are you obsessed with at the moment?

I go through phases of being obsessed with particular foods - sometimes whole meals and other times just ingredients.

Right now, I'm obsessed with basil. I'll eat anything with basil on or it in, and I like randomly chewing on basil leaves while I'm pottering in the kitchen.

I'm also obsessed with alioli. Anything that can be dipped in alioli, will be.

I bought some linseeds at the weekend for a recipe and then read about sprinkling them on to yogurt. Linseeds in strawberry yogurt is now fully lodged in my brain and I'm genuinely looking forward to stopping by the shop tomorrow to buy some yogurt.

What's floating your boat at the minute?

Pickle fans: the Vadasz sweet & hot jalapeno relish (I found it in Sainsburys) is epic and truly worth trying. It's crunchy and hot but not super-hot, and really fresh and green tasting. Very good on a cream cheese bagel!

StaunchMomma · 10/09/2024 10:05

The last few months have been a constant lunch of sourdough with houmous and kimchi or Vadasz garlic & dill pickles but I've reached saturation point.

I had a miso soup from Itsu a few weeks back and have been craving it since but can't warrant the daily drive into the nearest city to get one. Have tried making it at home but the seaweed & tofu just don't hit the same.

Added the M&S mushroom pate to our weekly order and crossing fingers.

I hate being in between obsessions. It's so taxing having to actually decide what to have!

I'm a Vadasz fan too. SO good.

Although, again, I've overdone the pickles to the point of rejection 😩

At the moment I've been making and eating my own granola also leek, carrot and lentil soup made with ham stock.

For ages my favourite lunch was roast chickpeas, cucumber, lettuce, bulgar wheat, feta and a hummus dressing but It's dead to me now. Same with frozen cherries, Greek yogurt and almond butter.

If I didn't have to cook for family I'd eat steak, chicken or salmon with tenderstem broccoli and asparagus for dinner every day.

Pregnantandconstantlyhungry · 10/09/2024 11:13

I’m pregnant and this thread is such a joy and source of inspiration. My obsessions are sometimes changing daily but recent ones have been:

omelettes with plenty of diced veg, chilli and cheese, slathered in tomato chutney
avocado and chopped tomato with chilli and rock salt on buttery toast
filled pasta in homemade basil pesto with balsamic dressed leaves and Parmesan
crusty warm buttery bread also double dipped in extra virgin and a good quality balsamic 🤦‍♀️
ice cold full fat milk specifically in a nice glass tumbler with two triple chocolate cookies from M&S
rice cakes slathered with peanut butter and sliced banana
sparkling water

So not much. 😂

Another one from a while ago: toast almonds under the grill, pour over nice dark chocolate, scoop little almond clustered and place them on some baking parchment. Sprinkle with a little bit of sea salt. I put them in the fridge to cool and harden so they have a bite.

@StaunchMomma Itsu have their miso available in ready made packets. My local Tesco stocks it but it's also available online

murasaki · 11/09/2024 15:43

@StaunchMomma the itsu ones don't seem to have the seaweed in, or at least the soup sachets I can see, but the yutaka ones do, i get them from Morrisons online, I'm sure other places do them. Squeezes into your mug with no visible signs of seaweed, add the hot water and there it is. You'd have to add your own tofu though, I don't bother.

Sounds good, I'll give it a try. Thanks.x.

Otherwise with the Itsu ones I just put a bit of baby spinach in the mug, it wilts down with the boiling water and works fine.

@StaunchMomma I’ve been using up my pantry stores and rediscovered an instant miso soup with seaweed and fried tofu. https://www.japancentre.com/en/products/4391-marukome-instant-miso-soup-fried-tofu

Here’s a version with just the seaweed www.amazon.co.uk/Marukome-Instant-Miso-Wakame-Seaweed/dp/B00H12ZA4G

A new obsession has entered the building… crumpet thins, with butter and marmite.

I love marmite on wholemeal toast, never had it on a crumpet. Lets just say it’s a bloody good job I only bought one packet Blush
