What foods are you obsessed with at the moment?

I go through phases of being obsessed with particular foods - sometimes whole meals and other times just ingredients.

Right now, I'm obsessed with basil. I'll eat anything with basil on or it in, and I like randomly chewing on basil leaves while I'm pottering in the kitchen.

I'm also obsessed with alioli. Anything that can be dipped in alioli, will be.

I bought some linseeds at the weekend for a recipe and then read about sprinkling them on to yogurt. Linseeds in strawberry yogurt is now fully lodged in my brain and I'm genuinely looking forward to stopping by the shop tomorrow to buy some yogurt.

What's floating your boat at the minute?

Oh and Sainsburys crinkle cut gherkins
I ate that many I got an email saying I was the biggest purchaser of them for 2023 Blush

I'm enchanted by that! How many did you have to buy?

[I LOVE crinkle cut gherkins. But I'm wondering if Aldi might send me a similar e-mail about their own-brand prosecco........ ]

Blarn · 09/09/2024 15:00

Buratta. I stick to one a week, sometimes two. I could eat one every day so have to enforce a two a week limit!

Sunnycolours · 09/09/2024 15:01

Mine is that viral marry me chicken. So annoying it’s not the healthiest and ds doesn’t like it. Otherwise I’d make a big pot of it every week 😋

This is the most amazing thing I've read on MN in a while.

Well done I think

Oh that sounds amazing. I was disappointed to find that Choc Dips have changed their recipe and now taste foul. This could be a good (superior) replacement!

Oh, and polish cottage cheese,

It's just delicious!!!

I tried the Polish cottage cheese, honestly, it's not a patch on Langley Farm's.

I'm currently in a cottage cheese, ritz cracker and everything bagel sprinkles phase. It's lasted about 10 weeks so far, I can't get enough of the stuff.

Vadasz fresh pickles with garlic and dill. Just delicious best pickles ever. I make a special trip to M&S food just for them, as my local Sainsburys doesn't stock them!

You have my sympathies, it is addictive (as is their kimchi) luckily all my local supermarkets stock it, just as well as they have closed our nearest m and s food store.

Meadowwild · 09/09/2024 15:05

Pul Biber. It's a salty, tangy chilli flake and I put it on everything. I now buy it in bulk.

Unashamedly obsessed with my daily lunch which is a salad/rice bowl:

  • spinach
  • purple cabbage
  • purple onion
  • shredded carrots
  • sweetcorn
  • half cup brown rice
  • walnut/cauliflower taco meat
  • spicy cashew garlic sauce

I'm probably only obsessed with it because I make the taco meat and cashew sauce myself so I have to use it all before it goes bad. I'm no friend to vampires but I don't care.

This sounds like the veg bibimbap I make, you could try it with gochujang (diluted a tiny bit to make it runnier) instead of cashew sauce, mix it all together and voilà. You have to like hot food, though.

@RuggedHairyTortoise I think I was buying 2 jars. A week Blush
They taste like McDonald's ones

AdaColeman · 09/09/2024 15:12

Basil
Try it in gin....Bruise two or three basil leaves with the back of a spoon, put in a glass and add gin, let it infuse for a few minutes before adding tonic.... Delicious!

spikeandbuffy · 09/09/2024 15:14

Cupboard looks a bit low actually...

Limth · 09/09/2024 15:16

@AdaColeman YES - I love basil in gin. I'm not drinking at the moment so this might need to wait a few months but it really is lovely.

I go through phases with this type of thing. At the moment it's Itsu frozen gyozas and miso soup.

I'm feeling a challenge coming on...... Wink

Seriously though- this will sound silly but I'm not good at buying things that only I like and nobody else in my house does. I'm going to change that right now and buy a few jars.

I'm not from the UK originally and my dad used to make me 'genuine posh English cucumber sandwiches' which was white bread, butter and crinkle cut pickled gherkins. I did not know the real proper way was raw cucumber until I came to live here. I think I know what tomorrow's lunch is going to be!

(On that note, my other favourite sandwich is white bread, cream cheese and those pepper stuffed olives).

M&S Double stuffed custard creams and pickled onion space raiders. Not together of course !

OldTinHat · 09/09/2024 15:24

I'm obsessed with something I'm desperate to try but can't justify the cost. The freeze dried veggies. I'm not advertising, trust me, but ooooh I want to try them!

Strokethefurrywall · 09/09/2024 15:25

Thanks @amoreoamicizia - I'll check to see if we have gochujang on island (live in Caribbean) and will try this.

I love spicy - typically I add a lot of hot sauces (practically a food group in itself here!) so will give this a go too!

Are they the ones that do herbs too? I was eyeing those up

shellyleppard · 09/09/2024 15:27

My obsession is dark chocolate ginger biscuit bars......i allow myself one a day!!! Absolutely gorgeous ..... gutted cos none till shopping arrives tomorrow

Wineandcupcakes · 09/09/2024 15:30

overnight oats. Nothing like porridge at all. And so good,

chia seeds, jumbo rolled oats, vanilla essence, chocolate chips , Greek yoghurt, skimmed milk, a squirt of honey, dried fruits, either cherries, pineapple, or mango,,,add fresh fruit in the morning, currently my fave is strawberries and blackberrries, stir it all up and leave over night, add fruit in the morning. The Chia seeds make it pudding like.

Ocado is bringing maple syrup, almond milk and cocoa tonight, so am going to try that next.
