Disgusting dog poo, busy seaside town, owner made it worse by pouring water!

I'm just coming to the end of my holiday in a popular seaside town. Today I was walking through the centre when I saw a couple with a dog picking up most (but not all) of a disgusting sticky dog shit, right in the middle of one of the busiest pedestrianised streets, lots of people and kids walking around, buying ice cream etc.

There was quite a large sticky mess remaining in the street, so the woman half heartedly poured her water bottle over it. This did nothing to dislodge the mess, it just created a brown river of poo that snaked over half the street. They then walked away laughing.
Within 30 seconds, scores of people were unknowingly walking through the shit.

When I walked back an hour later it was almost totally gone, obviously stuck to the shoes of 100+ tourists.
I'm not a dog owner, but I just couldn't leave something like that in such a busy area.
It's also made me wary seeing how quickly all trace of it disappeared. How often have I walked through smears of dog shit without knowing it?
Can't owners feed their dogs special food to make their poo less disgusting?

In fairness to them, they picked up what they could and then attempted to wash the rest away.
Surely thats preferable to just leaving it?

And have you never had diarrhoea/soft poo before? It happens.

What do you think happens when it rains?

saveforthat · 31/08/2024 21:54

Do you ever get diahorrea? So do dogs sometimes. I'm always mortified if my dog gets runny poo and has to go on the pavement. It's impossible to clean it up completely successfully.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 31/08/2024 21:54

We've just come back from two weeks by the sea in Devon. Dogs everywhere. I've never seen so many dogs in my life.

Had to scrub my eight year olds legs and crocs one day due to there being dog poo all over her. Tiny narrow pavements, loads of people and dogs shitting hither and thither. Grim.

Pettyhangingbaskets · 31/08/2024 21:57

What did you expect them to do ? They tried to clean it up

How ? If a dog’s got diarrhoea there’s not much else you can do, you can’t pick it up

Would you not be prepared for a few differences in the dogs stools just in case. My sister looked after a friends dog while they were on holiday and took poo bags and kitchen towel out with her. She soon found out she needed a disinfectant spray sometimes.

How did she get dog poo on her legs?

Rattatoille · 31/08/2024 22:31

"How did she get dog poo on her legs?"

The little girl may have sat on a swing at a park. Kids run all over the grass. then climb on swings, climbing frames, etc with dog faeces on their shoes, then another child will sit on swing and get it on their clothes.

Absolutely! Me too

Rattatoille · 31/08/2024 22:35

Just to add, my family & friends laugh at me for carrying a small spray of disinfectant and a cloth, to clean the swings. Often you can't see the pathogens, for want of a better word, but they are there. Public health risk.

Noshowlomo · 31/08/2024 22:38

I was in St Ives last week and there was dog crap all over the roads/pavements. Proper rank.

Bluesandwhites · 31/08/2024 22:40

I'm with you on this, OP. How do you know if the dog has even been wormed?
Toxicara Canis everywhere, disgusting.

I’m lucky with my dog and he goes on the grass in a park/ field area, never at home. He wouldn’t do that on a pavement, but I guess the dog may have been desperate, not far short of the owners cleaning it up with their tongues, what did you want them to do? The dog clearly had the runs. It can’t wait to go on the local Armitage Shanks public toilet.

sunnygardens · 31/08/2024 22:45

What happened to dog owners getting fined for not picking up their dog shit? It's everywhere!
