Disgusting dog poo, busy seaside town, owner made it worse by pouring water!

Saniflo33 · 31/08/2024 21:49

I'm just coming to the end of my holiday in a popular seaside town. Today I was walking through the centre when I saw a couple with a dog picking up most (but not all) of a disgusting sticky dog shit, right in the middle of one of the busiest pedestrianised streets, lots of people and kids walking around, buying ice cream etc.

There was quite a large sticky mess remaining in the street, so the woman half heartedly poured her water bottle over it. This did nothing to dislodge the mess, it just created a brown river of poo that snaked over half the street. They then walked away laughing.
Within 30 seconds, scores of people were unknowingly walking through the shit.

When I walked back an hour later it was almost totally gone, obviously stuck to the shoes of 100+ tourists.
I'm not a dog owner, but I just couldn't leave something like that in such a busy area.
It's also made me wary seeing how quickly all trace of it disappeared. How often have I walked through smears of dog shit without knowing it?
Can't owners feed their dogs special food to make their poo less disgusting?

@MiaFeysImprobableBosom with respect, you are being ridiculous. Dogs exist. Cats exist. Birds that shit all over your windows exist. There is no way to avoid certain things and if you want to live in a society where others people's choices will occasionally inconvenience you I think you need to be a little more tolerant. For your own wellbeing.

The owners did all they reasonably could to clear up the mess. If they'd ignored it and walked on by then of course it would be unreasonable and immoral. But that's not what happened. Unclench.

Why should we be tolerant? It's intolerance of vast numbers of dog turds on the pavements, in play parks etc. that moved us forward from the state of affairs people describe in the 70s. It's not a massive step forward to extend that intolerance as far as leaving visible shit smears that can still stick to people's shoes and still need scraping out with a toothpick while trying not to heave.

And if anyone's being ridiculous, it's you, bringing up wild birds. When shit from someone else's pet dog or pet cat causes problems for somebody, that shit was where it was because another person wanted the benefits of that pet and didn't care that someone else is paying the costs. When shit from a wild bird causes problems for somebody, that's just a wild bird.

The 70's were better though

Dog poo was white!

yumyum33 · 01/09/2024 18:18

This is such an unreasonable thread. They tried their best to pick it up. What were they expected to do? Lick it clean?

The Young Ones called it The Magic White Dog Turd.

Absolutely. Also, dogs in the 70’s were literally allowed to wander out and about by themselves. Just dogs roaming the streets. Many a time when I was little I would be playing out on the streets and take a dog home to my mum asking if I could keep it. And no rules on dogs crapping everywhere and anywhere. No-one picked up after their dog. Unbelievable when you think about it.

Now it's cats in that rôle.

SirChenjins · 01/09/2024 18:28

Firstly, not feeding your dog crap food will help firm up their poos - raw is brilliant. Secondly, carry baby wipes with you in your dog bag - that way you can clean up most/all of the remaining shit after you’ve picked up as much as you can with the poo bag.

Far fewer dogs in the 70s as well.

MajesticWhine · 01/09/2024 18:36

Sometimes dogs don’t go where you want them to. I’ve taken mine for an hour long walk around the park before now and they crap on the pavement on the way back. Arseholes.

Owmyelbow · 01/09/2024 18:40

If it was Hunstanton I saw the same and thought the same. Absolutely stank

WalkersAntler · 01/09/2024 18:44

As long as you aren’t planning to lick the soles of your shoes you should be ok
OP. Chill out.

wastingtimeonhere · 01/09/2024 19:13

You know the gravelly dust in the gutter/ under hedges..it makes a good soak up for runnys...its then easier to clean up..
My dog is trained to go in the garden before we go out, and she will go to the loo if she needs it.. but like us, on holiday, her routine is out of sync. Her habits won't necessarily be normal.
Occasionally, she will get an upset tummy.. I deal with it the best I can.

On holiday she will be with us, we do visit towns with old and actually interesting streets.

Pavements are generally very dirty anyway. Most mess is human. I walked down the steps to the beach today. No dogs allowed this time of year...stunk of piss, human shit beside beach huts, rubbish strewn everywhere.

@MiaFeysImprobableBosom but dogs and cats exist. If people didn't keep them as pets they would be roaming free and shitting where they like.

I'm with you on people not picking up dog shit, it's a massive pet hate of mine, the same as off lead dogs. But I genuinely don't know what you think the owners could have done differently in this case. Do you actually have any ideas or do you just want to vent about how much you resent dog and cat owners?

Whackadoodledo2i1 · 31/08/2024 21:50

Shit happens.

Huge companies are literally loading shit, human shit in oceans. Where’s your anger @Saniflo33 @sunnygardens
Our tap water is screwed.

You worry about a bloody dog turd? FML

All you hear is dog, dog shit- what about human shit!!!!!! In our mouths not on pavements, shoes, drive ways.

As I said, it's up to the dog owners to provide the ideas. Maybe dog owners should prepare better.

Pet dogs and cats are deliberately bred to meet demand. There are established techniques for dealing with nuisance feral dog and cat populations. You might as well argue that we all became vegan, we'd have millions of cows and pigs and chickens roaming the streets 24/7, so we might as well down trousers and crap in the street.

I would never take my dog walking round a town, I have no idea why anyone does. They'd hate it, they would get nothing from it

Goes to show how all dogs are different.

My dog seems to quite enjoy a walk through a busyish pedestrian area. And if we sit at a cafe or somewhere she seems very content to sit and people watch.

I have a dog who treats her walk like a visit to her constituents 😆 she struts past people and if they show even the tiniest bit of attention or fuss she loves it. Obviously she’s on a lead and I keep her away unless asked, but she thinks people are there to see her, and to be fair she does get a lot of fuss from passers by which proves her right lol!

Nw22 · 01/09/2024 20:36

We live in the city centre. Our dog loves walking in busy places. I haven’t seen a dog poo on the pavement here in years yet used to all time when I was a child.

bittertwisted · 01/09/2024 20:37

@MiaFeysImprobableBosom I am so glad I have brought my children up to enjoy the absolute joy of loving pets

Watching my boys only tonight showing that kindness and compassion for living things

And they always pick the shit up

Good. Having pets is fantastic, life-enhancing, educational, and can have a wide range of benefits for children as well as adults. I've had so much joy from every one of my pets.

I’ve seen a similar situation recently where someone got a load of sand from the beach and pit that on the runny poo she couldn’t clear up. That did a good job of soaking it up then she scraped up the shitty sand. Very affective and admirable amount of effort from the owner.

I remember from my school days when the caretaker would chuck sawdust on any vomit, let it soak up, then scoop the whole lot up. Same thing.

Jugglingarsehole · 01/09/2024 21:34

Dogs need to be banned from towns. They leave filthy shit residue even when the poo is picked up. Often it is never picked up. I am sick of scrubbing shit off my children’s shoes. Some dogs kill people. It is unfair to inflict these consequences on non dog owners.

Pettyhangingbaskets · 01/09/2024 21:36

Ban dogs from towns ? That’s a new one, all dogs ? All towns ?

Mothermummymum · 01/09/2024 21:39

You sound like someone who would expect a horse rider to pick up their horses shit.

Jugglingarsehole · 01/09/2024 21:42

Yes ban all dogs from all towns. Why do we non dog owners have to deal with literal shit so that you can play with a dog?

Nope because horse shit is not toxic like dog shit.

So’s cat shit, shall we ban them too ?
