Disgusting dog poo, busy seaside town, owner made it worse by pouring water!

I'm just coming to the end of my holiday in a popular seaside town. Today I was walking through the centre when I saw a couple with a dog picking up most (but not all) of a disgusting sticky dog shit, right in the middle of one of the busiest pedestrianised streets, lots of people and kids walking around, buying ice cream etc.

There was quite a large sticky mess remaining in the street, so the woman half heartedly poured her water bottle over it. This did nothing to dislodge the mess, it just created a brown river of poo that snaked over half the street. They then walked away laughing.
Within 30 seconds, scores of people were unknowingly walking through the shit.

When I walked back an hour later it was almost totally gone, obviously stuck to the shoes of 100+ tourists.
I'm not a dog owner, but I just couldn't leave something like that in such a busy area.
It's also made me wary seeing how quickly all trace of it disappeared. How often have I walked through smears of dog shit without knowing it?
Can't owners feed their dogs special food to make their poo less disgusting?

Yes ban all dogs from all towns. Why do we non dog owners have to deal with literal shit so that you can play with a dog?

It is people who are the problem, not dogs.

You sound mad, and that can't be good for your blood pressure. Maybe think about getting a dog.

How ? If a dog’s got diarrhoea there’s not much else you can do, you can’t pick it up

If a dog has diarrhoea they probably knew before they went out for a walk with it. Don't take the dog out if it has got diarrhoea.

Jugglingarsehole · 01/09/2024 21:45

Pettyhangingbaskets · 01/09/2024 21:42

How’s that going to work then ?

Impose a £1,000 fine for taking dogs into certain areas. Frankly I would be happy if only farm dogs and service dogs were allowed anywhere.
It is insane that people think that the public should deal with toxic shit and random dog attacks just because you enjoy playing with Fido.

Not really. It can come as a total surprise. And in the warmer weather, some dogs are more prone to softer poos as the day goes on... or after they have had a good run.

So it is mad that I don’t want my kids and I to walk through dog shit residue? It is mad that I don’t want dog shit on the streets? It is mad that I don’t want people killed by dogs?
Yes owners are the problem but the only solution is banning dogs.

I don't like dog shit in the streets, or dogs attacking people either. But both of those issues are people issues.

The vast majority of dog owners pick up after their dogs, and have dogs that don't randomly attack people in the street.

I know it CAN come as a surprise, but generally, I know if my dog has a bad tummy without having to take her out for a walk. You can usually smell the farts.

I repeat what I said to a previous poster. I know it CAN come as a surprise, but generally, I know if my dog has a bad tummy without having to take her out for a walk. You can usually smell the farts. It is not rocket science.

Never had a dog then?

Think you need to inform my Goldie

My dog loved it in St Ives yesterday. She had a train ride, a walk on the beach, she had my lotus biscuit while I drank my coffee, we went in some shops, we shared a sausage roll, got back in the car and went to another beach. We’re here on holiday, she’s having a great time. I’m hardly going to leave her in the caravan. She’s had a whole day walking today with no town visit you’ll be glad to know. Rain is forecast for tomorrow, we might go to Falmouth. She’ll probably shit on the pavement at some point but I’ll bag it and bin it.

I guess I've never had a townie dog!! Mine just hate the people and the bustle and the cars, glad there are some dogs who like it!

Several over the past 30 years or so. Do you not have a sense of smell? It is usually pretty obvious (to me at least) when one of my dogs is going to produce copious amounts of runny shit. If you are careful with their diet, then it does not happen often. People feed their dogs from the table with human food, and this is clearly not good for them.

of course - all of the MN dogs are totally different. Or perhaps none of you have a sense of smell.

Calm down Jilly Goolden.
Like you say, it CAN take you by surprise.
There's not much you can do when it does.

Wipes.
You can carry those thick floor wipes and get some disposable gloves on and sort out what your dog left behind!

And my dog has softer poos as the day goes on. Nothing wrong with her... is just how her body works. I still pick her poo up, but accept that some residue will be left. But the outside is not sterile, and it is batshit to expect anything outside should be a surface you can eat your dinner off of.

So far all I have had are 100% comments that people cannot tell if their dog has an upset tummy before they take it for a walk and it does runny shits on the pavement. So I can only assume that all dogs on MN manage to hide their symptoms. Fortunately, my dogs and my sense of smell are functioning pretty well, so I usually know in advance. Lucky me.

Wipes are crap on anything other than a smooth surface.

I live in a town, so according to some people I should keep my dog housebound, or not have her to start with.

Way too many don’t pick it up though.
It’s horrible and toxic.

and every dog owner should carry large floor wipes & disposable gloves too in case their dog makes a mess that’s not solid.
