Disgusting dog poo, busy seaside town, owner made it worse by pouring water!

Saniflo33 · 31/08/2024 21:49

I'm just coming to the end of my holiday in a popular seaside town. Today I was walking through the centre when I saw a couple with a dog picking up most (but not all) of a disgusting sticky dog shit, right in the middle of one of the busiest pedestrianised streets, lots of people and kids walking around, buying ice cream etc.

There was quite a large sticky mess remaining in the street, so the woman half heartedly poured her water bottle over it. This did nothing to dislodge the mess, it just created a brown river of poo that snaked over half the street. They then walked away laughing.
Within 30 seconds, scores of people were unknowingly walking through the shit.

When I walked back an hour later it was almost totally gone, obviously stuck to the shoes of 100+ tourists.
I'm not a dog owner, but I just couldn't leave something like that in such a busy area.
It's also made me wary seeing how quickly all trace of it disappeared. How often have I walked through smears of dog shit without knowing it?
Can't owners feed their dogs special food to make their poo less disgusting?

“People who expect sterile streets, and dog owners to carry full biohazard decontamination kits.”

yes, of course that’s exactly what those who find dog dirt disgusting expect. 🙄

It’s all just such a big joke to the doggy people. And that’s the problem.

The doggy lot inflict their animals’ filth on the whole of society and expect us to agree that they’re entitled to and that we’re being unreasonable to want to live without having to dodge dog dirt every time we go outside our own front door.

It is pretty funny, actually, the outrage and preciousness.

Look, I'm really, really careful about picking up after my dog. And I really get annoyed when people don't pick up after their dog (although I personally think that other people's cats pooing in my veggie garden is worse).

But I just feel a bit sorry for this woman, who was trying, and probably mortified.

That's also disgusting, selfish and antisocial. But at least I've never had to sit on my back step and scrape embedded piss chunks out of shoe treads and off the sides where it's squidged up, or had someone get in the car and been hit with a wave of unbearable stink because earlier they stepped on a pavement with dried piss on it, or had to cut an outing short because someone stepped in an unexpected piss-moist patch.

It's not exactly new information that the soles of our shoes touch unhygienic surfaces. Obviously there's going to be a lot of invisible filth whether it's rat piss residue, human piss residue, dog shit residue, vomit residue, saliva residue, etc., plus all the stuff that's naturally there. It's not a problem. Shoes can handle walking on an unsanitised pavement. The problem is when people leave one of the most disgusting substances known to man in areas where people are likely to walk, in sufficient quantities that if someone steps in it, it'll likely fuck up their trip out, or their shoes, or both. Assuming the OP's description was accurate, the dog owners left behind enough shit to ruin someone's day.

The dog owners in the OP tried to wash the poo away with water. What else could they have done?
I have a dog, and I don't routinely carry about with me a jet washer or can of Jeyes Fluid.

Their dog, their problem to troubleshoot.

And washing away with water is fine to me.

It is an OP problem, because she wanted a surgery ready sterile field on the floor. Not going to happen.

Hyperbole. OP didn’t say anything about wanting a sterile pavement, she just wanted visible dog shit cleaned away before others trod in it

I don't know whether you didn't read the OP, or you're making up your own scenario just for fun — either way, when you're ready to talk about the actual situation the OP described, let me know and I'm sure I'll be thrilled to discuss it with you.

Using wet wipes & disposable gloves to clean up residue is a brilliant idea.

LimeSqueezy · 02/09/2024 04:00

There's a guy in my neighbourhood who carries a dog poo bag on an extendable stick. When the dog squats to poop he puts the bag under its butt so the poop goes in the bag, avoiding scenarios like this!

HelenWheels · 02/09/2024 05:36

go back to covid times
wash your hands when you come in

but what i want to know, what would you say about the bird shit?

Re dog diarrhoea - back in the days when my sister had a dog and my parents used to get guilted into looking after it, the dog once had a dogshit-soup attack on the pavement. My mother was beyond mortified, went into a nearby shop and bought a newspaper to soak the filth up, then somehow managed to pick up the newspaper sheets by the corner and get them into a bin. Absolutely foul, but she really did do her best and that is what people should do in such circs. Needless to say she never took the dog again after that - said it one of the most embarassing things ever to happen to her in a public place!

Yea but it sounds like the family in the OP did this and more so that's ok right?

Wipes - I’ve already told you. You claimed they shred - I’ve told you they don’t(I know from experience). No-one has claimed it needs to be left in a sterile condition or that you need to carry a jet washer so you can tone down the drama.

Yes, there were loads of dogs just cutting about the place in the 70s. I remember when my sister and I were out playing there was a particular wee brown dog that used to appear and spend the day with us on our various shenanigans. Then he would bugger off wherever he went for the night.

There was dog shit all over the bloody place back then!

I'm an 80s child, so was out and about as a teen in the 90s and it was the same then! My friend's dogs used to just be let out in the morning and they'd reappear when they were hungry!

Dogs shouldn’t be allowed on narrow streets.

You have to be on the wind up 🤣 if you are, very funny.

If you aren't, how does one define a 'narrow' street? How're you going to police Albert going in his mobility scooter to get some fish and chips with his little terrier in whitby? How aboht folk who live on 'narrow' streets, they're not permitted to own their dog now? Who's going to sanction this? Who's going to go around measuring street width?

Sartre · 02/09/2024 08:59

I don’t have dogs but do sympathise with this couple, although I wouldn’t have laughed it off as they did and would have been pretty embarrassed. I’m not sure what else they could have done in this situation, short of dashing off to a shop for baby wipes and scrubbing the pavement?

Uriahsnose · 02/09/2024 09:01

MiaFeysImprobableBosom · 01/09/2024 20:22

As I said, it's up to the dog owners to provide the ideas. Maybe dog owners should prepare better.

Pet dogs and cats are deliberately bred to meet demand. There are established techniques for dealing with nuisance feral dog and cat populations. You might as well argue that we all became vegan, we'd have millions of cows and pigs and chickens roaming the streets 24/7, so we might as well down trousers and crap in the street.

If we all became vegan, cows etc wouldn't be roaming the streets. They wouldn't exist. We're not falling over piles of cassette tapes, mangles and analogue tvs. They've stopped being produced as people do not buy them now.
Don't be thick on purpose.

Pettyhangingbaskets · 01/09/2024 21:42

How’s that going to work then ?

It could work absolutely fine! We'd just have to ban all humans too! Easy peasy!

m00rfarm · 01/09/2024 21:45

If a dog has diarrhoea they probably knew before they went out for a walk with it. Don't take the dog out if it has got diarrhoea.

How? The dog woke them up that morning asking for some Imodium?

Uriahsnose · 02/09/2024 09:25

Jugglingarsehole · 01/09/2024 21:45

Impose a £1,000 fine for taking dogs into certain areas. Frankly I would be happy if only farm dogs and service dogs were allowed anywhere.
It is insane that people think that the public should deal with toxic shit and random dog attacks just because you enjoy playing with Fido.

A lot of the time, it isn't about 'playing with Fido'. It's about safety, protection, anxiety, companionship, preventing loneliness, giving oneself a purpose, helping teach your children about compassion and the joys of companion animals, exercise... I could go on.

Uriahsnose · 02/09/2024 09:34

XenoBitch · 01/09/2024 22:58

Why do we have public loos?

We don't, in many areas. Or if we do they're closed, not maintained or the realm of drug users. There's a public loo on my local park that the park wardens use to dump rubbish in. I tried using it once, dark, no lights, syringes and god knows what all over the floor, of course no loo roll or running water. I ended up hiding behind my friend/a bush. The ones in my local village have been closed for as long as I remember and the only ones in my nearest town are in Tesco.

Not a dog owner but I have tried to use wipes to clean up a childs sick and they did shred for me, guess it depends on the wipe

There is not a shop attached to my local park.
And you think it is ok to leave a dog house bound because it had the runs once?

Can't do that if you're walking a dog alone either. Unless you leave it tied up somewhere to be stolen/attacked.

Yep, wipe dependent. The eco ones are rubbish.

We had a few days in Margate last week and there wasn't a shitty dog mess to be seen.
