Disgusting dog poo, busy seaside town, owner made it worse by pouring water!

Saniflo33 · 31/08/2024 21:49

I'm just coming to the end of my holiday in a popular seaside town. Today I was walking through the centre when I saw a couple with a dog picking up most (but not all) of a disgusting sticky dog shit, right in the middle of one of the busiest pedestrianised streets, lots of people and kids walking around, buying ice cream etc.

There was quite a large sticky mess remaining in the street, so the woman half heartedly poured her water bottle over it. This did nothing to dislodge the mess, it just created a brown river of poo that snaked over half the street. They then walked away laughing.
Within 30 seconds, scores of people were unknowingly walking through the shit.

When I walked back an hour later it was almost totally gone, obviously stuck to the shoes of 100+ tourists.
I'm not a dog owner, but I just couldn't leave something like that in such a busy area.
It's also made me wary seeing how quickly all trace of it disappeared. How often have I walked through smears of dog shit without knowing it?
Can't owners feed their dogs special food to make their poo less disgusting?

This is why I never take my dog to busy towns or anywhere there are lots of people around.
You can guarantee your bottom dollar that dogs will save the shittiest of shits for times like this, it's sod's law and carrying a bucket of disinfectant and a broom on every walk is a little inconvenient when out and about so I stick to fields and woodland areas for my dog walks.

I honestly don't know why they can't do their business at home and then go for a walk. How we have got to the point as a society where it is acceptable to let our pets crap all over the streets to get trodden into our homes and classrooms baffles me. Little kids and carpet time always worries me.

Try harder!

That is unfair, unless a business had a bucket of hot water, then of course a h/s hazard

What did you expect them to do ? They tried to clean it up

Maybe walk the dog in a more suitable area rather than letting it shit in a busy shopping centre

I was in St Ives last week and there was dog crap all over the roads/pavements. Proper rank.

Where are the wardens?

What happened to dog owners getting fined for not picking up their dog shit? It's everywhere!

They did pick it up and attempt to wash it away. Do you struggle with reading comprehension?

There's only so much you can do in these situations op. Been there many times with my ddog. I am open to suggestions on how to sufficiently remove doggy diarrhoea from the pavement because it's really not easy when only armed with poo bags and bottled water.

Gunz · 31/08/2024 23:31

Tip I learned after owning a few dogs over the years is to give the dogs a daily probiotic. This saves the trauma of 'messy poos'. I noticed that this advice was given out on the Crufts coverage on Channel 4 this year. I wouldn't walk my dog around busy tourist towns.

Jl2014 · 31/08/2024 23:33

I’m with you, OP. It’s disgusting and it’s getting worse in the UK.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 31/08/2024 23:35

I would never take my dog walking round a town, I have no idea why anyone does. They'd hate it, they would get nothing from it. They're not toys or accessories, they shouldn't be put in situations like this.

FiveShelties · 31/08/2024 23:35

I hope you achieved what you wanted from this thread OP.

Just to add, my family & friends laugh at me for carrying a small spray of disinfectant and a cloth, to clean the swings. Often you can't see the pathogens, for want of a better word, but they are there. Public health risk.

Tbh, if that’s your thought process, you would need to spray and clean everything touched by the human hand. Shop door handles, public toilet handles and facilities, theme park ride seats - endless list. People can also be grim with their personal hygiene, and you just don’t know what they’ve transferred from their grubby hands onto all manner of things.

BankHolidayReset · 31/08/2024 23:51

I was walking g alone the beach today and there was loads of dog poo on the sand. It's definitely got worse over recent years.

Very low percentage of people who don’t clean up after their dog. When was the last time you trod in dog poo? Decades ago for me. If you say you and your children tread pet faeces into their school/home on a daily basis, then I would very much think you are over exaggerating the point….

I walk my dog in town because that is where I live.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 01/09/2024 00:17

The thing is, we have a hugely increased number of dogs, combined with hyper-vigilent pet-care trends where it is increasingly unacceptable to leave a dog in a car (even briefly and safely) or to leave it at home for more than very short periods of time. The result is that increasingly dogs tend to be wherever their owners are. I agree it’s tiresome.

OP was in a seaside town... and lots of people take their dogs on holiday to such places. I have never met a dog who did not love the beach. My own dog loses her mind once she feels sand on her toes, and it is such a pleasure to see her enjoy herself.
You are not allowed to leave dogs alone in holiday accommodation, so it stands to reason that people will have their dogs with them when out and about.

I agree OP. I carry a karcher pressure washer machine with me whenever I walk the dog- just incase she has a soft poo! Doesn't everyone???😆

Goes to show how all dogs are different.

My dog seems to quite enjoy a walk through a busyish pedestrian area. And if we sit at a cafe or somewhere she seems very content to sit and people watch.

Mine loves a walk around the town centre. Half eaten sausages and a couple of chips here and there. Melting ice cream and ketchup splatter, not to forget chewing gum, the odd discarded cigarette bud and fruit flavour vape.
Honestly, it's great mental stimulation for your dog. Also referred to as sniffy walk.

coronafiona · 01/09/2024 07:20

@Livelovebehappy posters are saying it is all over the streets, which it is. So whether it's been cleaned up or not there are still bacteria and bits left after someone has picked it up.
My view is that owners are welcome to deal with that on their own property and then bring the dog out, rather than let it "go" in a street where everyone has to walk. I honestly don't know why it has become socially acceptable it is absolutely disgusting.

I agree, it’s not good, but maybe the owner does toilet the dog before they leave the house, but if the dog had a dodgy tummy that particular day, toilet routine would go straight out the window, so would presume a one off situation.

Are you able to shit on demand?

Are you able to shit on demand?

Not If I don’t need one.

Dogs do control their bowels overnight so they can stop themselves from going. They are just trained to shit when they are out.
A friend trained hers to poo in her own garden and was always sent into the garden prior to a walk.

Flossflower · 01/09/2024 10:30

If your dog has diarrhoea you take something with you to mop it up. Even caught unaware most people have tissues with them or they should.
