Disgusting dog poo, busy seaside town, owner made it worse by pouring water!

Saniflo33 · 31/08/2024 21:49

I'm just coming to the end of my holiday in a popular seaside town. Today I was walking through the centre when I saw a couple with a dog picking up most (but not all) of a disgusting sticky dog shit, right in the middle of one of the busiest pedestrianised streets, lots of people and kids walking around, buying ice cream etc.

There was quite a large sticky mess remaining in the street, so the woman half heartedly poured her water bottle over it. This did nothing to dislodge the mess, it just created a brown river of poo that snaked over half the street. They then walked away laughing.
Within 30 seconds, scores of people were unknowingly walking through the shit.

When I walked back an hour later it was almost totally gone, obviously stuck to the shoes of 100+ tourists.
I'm not a dog owner, but I just couldn't leave something like that in such a busy area.
It's also made me wary seeing how quickly all trace of it disappeared. How often have I walked through smears of dog shit without knowing it?
Can't owners feed their dogs special food to make their poo less disgusting?

People are talking about how ridiculous it would be to expect pristine sterilised pavements without even the slightest scientifically detectable trace of anything left behind, whereas I was under the impression we were discussing

Leaving behind enough of the central shitpile for it to still be described as a "large sticky mess", which now also has an additional river of shit-water flowing away from it, is disgusting. Somebody could still step in the main pile, and lots of people will step in the runoff.

I don't expect or want people to get down on their hands and knees and scrub every microscopic fleck out from between the crevices in the tarmac, or sanitise the street to the point I could eat my dinner off it.

I want people to leave the pavement clean enough that children, distracted people, blind people or unlucky people won't accidentally end up with actual visible dogshit material squidged into the soles of their shoes, or dogshit gravy splashed on their trouser hems.

Dog shit gravy on their trouser hems?! I’m crying🤣

Kids as well? I saw a small kid having a piss in the gutter in the High St the other day. Why should non kid owners have to put up with kids who have no need to be in a town centre shopping. 😁

There is a thread in Chat about nappies being changed on cafe tables.
People are gross.

I guess I've never had a townie dog!! Mine just hate the people and the bustle and the cars, glad there are some dogs who like it!

She genuinely loves it. She’s the nosiest dog going so loves seeing the hustle and bustle.

"How did she get dog poo on her legs?"

The little girl may have sat on a swing at a park. Kids run all over the grass. then climb on swings, climbing frames, etc with dog faeces on their shoes, then another child will sit on swing and get it on their clothes.

And then they get it in their hands…
it’s TOXIC
can cause BLINDNESS.

But so many doggy people here just think it’s hilarious 😡

Very low percentage of people who don’t clean up after their dog. When was the last time you trod in dog poo? Decades ago for me. If you say you and your children tread pet faeces into their school/home on a daily basis, then I would very much think you are over exaggerating the point….

The amount of dog dirt on the footpath and beach where I live is shocking. The beach seems to be regarded as a dog toilet for many of the dog walkers who use it. I actually started carrying poop bags with me & pick it up anytime I see it because I hate the thought of little children being harmed by it. It’s absolutely disgusting and disgraceful.

JC03745 · 01/09/2024 00:33

I agree OP. I carry a karcher pressure washer machine with me whenever I walk the dog- just incase she has a soft poo! Doesn't everyone???😆

Oh isn’t it all so hilarious!!
The health risks to little children from the filth left behind by lazy dog owners and their Furbabies - best laugh in ages.

It will lift some of the residue.
or you could train your dog to do its dirt in your own garden, rather than making it everyone else’s problem to sort out. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Why do we have public loos?

No you can't. Not for most dogs.

You can house-trained dogs because they don't want to foul the nest. Limiting poo out walking is guide dog level training.

Toxocara is very rare, is carried by foxes, and is killed by de wormer.

Yes, people should pick up after their dogs, but can we wind back the Hyacinth Bucket a bit?

AgileGreenSeal · 01/09/2024 23:20

XenoBitch · 01/09/2024 22:11

Which will have been picked up in a bag anyway. The rest is residue... and again, outside is not sterile.

No one expects it to be sterile!

So many dog owners here asking for suggestions on how to clear up runny residue and when suggestions are made come off with straw men like “outside is not sterile”.

Wipes may not clear it all but they will certainly lift some of it - IF and it’s a big IF dog owners can be bothered.

Marnieloves · 01/09/2024 23:22

I don’t know what you expected them to do! What a non issue. Presumably nobody was eating off the floor.

AgileGreenSeal · 01/09/2024 23:23

SirChenjins · 01/09/2024 22:38

Why the snark? I carry some baby wipes in my dog bag for this purpose - only had to use them once but it was easy enough to pick up what I could, wipe the rest, bag and bin. I don’t like walking in other dog’s shit, I don’t expect others to do the same in my dog’s shit.

Thank you! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

"People who expect sterile streets"

Well i've never seen dog cak in the rest of Europe, Germany in particular, where the streets are hosed down early in the morning.

It’s all very funny isn’t it?

When really all that’s needed is a little respect and effort from the people creating the problem which they’re inflicting on everyone.

but no, that’s asking too much, let’s just make stupid jokes and snarky comments.

My word this thread is bonkers. People who expect sterile streets, and dog owners to carry full biohazard decontamination kits. People who expect owners to magically be able to tell their dogs to cross their legs and hold it when they've suddenly got the runs in a place where they are out of routine.

It sounds like this woman with the dog was trying her best, and just got caught out. People aren't perfect, and you need to cut them a little slack sometimes.

“People who expect sterile streets, and dog owners to carry full biohazard decontamination kits.”

yes, of course that’s exactly what those who find dog dirt disgusting expect. 🙄

It’s all just such a big joke to the doggy people. And that’s the problem.

The doggy lot inflict their animals’ filth on the whole of society and expect us to agree that they’re entitled to and that we’re being unreasonable to want to live without having to dodge dog dirt every time we go outside our own front door.

ScienceGreek · 01/09/2024 23:40

This is why anyone who comes to my house is asked to take their shoes off.

It is the outside. Dog shit is the least of your worries. The streets are covered in human piss too, because like dogs, humans can't just wait to do it at home either.

Catinavat · 01/09/2024 23:43

We saw a family driving back from Cornwall with a dog poo bag hung on their rear windscreen wiper having clearly forgotten to put it in the bin.....if he turned the wiper on it was going to hurl the bag at the cars around him. He must have wondered why he was being given such a wide berth!

Shit happens!

XenoBitch · 01/09/2024 23:45

It is not caught from fresh poo residue. And it can be caught from fox poo (feel free to chase them and bag their poo), and cat poo. Most dogs and cats are routinely wormed, so it is not even an issue.

And it is caught from swallowing the eggs. Teach your kids not to eat dirt.

Depends on the area, but some streets are full of dog crap.

It's not just about "When did you actually step in it last?" or "Toxicaris is rare." It's about the fact that people want to enjoy walks and let their kids walk about freely, yet in practice everyone has to be constantly fucking vigilent about dog shit. Peering down at the streets with every step, instead of looking at the sky or flowers or trees or noticing what's in shop windows or catching sight of someone we know or other things we'd prefer to do while walking.

Cannot fucking wait for the post-2020 doggy tidal wave to start receding, and I'm not the only one.

Re dog diarrhoea - back in the days when my sister had a dog and my parents used to get guilted into looking after it, the dog once had a dogshit-soup attack on the pavement. My mother was beyond mortified, went into a nearby shop and bought a newspaper to soak the filth up, then somehow managed to pick up the newspaper sheets by the corner and get them into a bin. Absolutely foul, but she really did do her best and that is what people should do in such circs. Needless to say she never took the dog again after that - said it one of the most embarassing things ever to happen to her in a public place!

There is not a shop attached to my local park.
And you think it is ok to leave a dog house bound because it had the runs once?

No one is arguing that in normal circumstances, people shouldn't pick up after their dog. It sounds like this was an unusual circumstance, though. I don't think it's worth wasting vitriol on.

That's also disgusting, selfish and antisocial. But at least I've never had to sit on my back step and scrape embedded piss chunks out of shoe treads and off the sides where it's squidged up, or had someone get in the car and been hit with a wave of unbearable stink because earlier they stepped on a pavement with dried piss on it, or had to cut an outing short because someone stepped in an unexpected piss-moist patch.

It's not exactly new information that the soles of our shoes touch unhygienic surfaces. Obviously there's going to be a lot of invisible filth whether it's rat piss residue, human piss residue, dog shit residue, vomit residue, saliva residue, etc., plus all the stuff that's naturally there. It's not a problem. Shoes can handle walking on an unsanitised pavement. The problem is when people leave one of the most disgusting substances known to man in areas where people are likely to walk, in sufficient quantities that if someone steps in it, it'll likely fuck up their trip out, or their shoes, or both. Assuming the OP's description was accurate, the dog owners left behind enough shit to ruin someone's day.
