Disgusting dog poo, busy seaside town, owner made it worse by pouring water!

I'm just coming to the end of my holiday in a popular seaside town. Today I was walking through the centre when I saw a couple with a dog picking up most (but not all) of a disgusting sticky dog shit, right in the middle of one of the busiest pedestrianised streets, lots of people and kids walking around, buying ice cream etc.

There was quite a large sticky mess remaining in the street, so the woman half heartedly poured her water bottle over it. This did nothing to dislodge the mess, it just created a brown river of poo that snaked over half the street. They then walked away laughing.
Within 30 seconds, scores of people were unknowingly walking through the shit.

When I walked back an hour later it was almost totally gone, obviously stuck to the shoes of 100+ tourists.
I'm not a dog owner, but I just couldn't leave something like that in such a busy area.
It's also made me wary seeing how quickly all trace of it disappeared. How often have I walked through smears of dog shit without knowing it?
Can't owners feed their dogs special food to make their poo less disgusting?

Way too many don’t pick it up though.
It’s horrible and toxic.

and every dog owner should carry large floor wipes & disposable gloves too in case their dog makes a mess that’s not solid.

Floor wipes do fuck all on a rough concrete path.. and even less on grass.... unless you want me to get on my hands and knees and wipe every blade of grass?
If my dog has the runs in my own garden, I put water on it. It is all you can do. Outside is not sterile, and you should not expect it to be.

I live in a town, so according to some people I should keep my dog housebound, or not have her to start with.

Yeah I didn't really think it through, just generalised off my dogs, apologies.

Grass is OK as if you put water on to dilute it, it generally doesn't run. On pavement, water (if most has not been picked up) runs everywhere and it is disgusting.

They are better than leaving the crap lying there!

Which will have been picked up in a bag anyway. The rest is residue... and again, outside is not sterile.

Nonbio46 · 01/09/2024 22:19

I usually carry a small tub with washing powder in it as sometimes my dog does watery poop. I sprinkle it over the ‘ puddle’ ( after getting as much up as possible ) and hope it’s easier for people to see/avoid and when it rains it’s better washed away. 😊

Outside is not sterile so let’s leave dog shit residue there. What a shitty attitude.

LameBorzoi · 01/09/2024 22:20

My word this thread is bonkers. People who expect sterile streets, and dog owners to carry full biohazard decontamination kits. People who expect owners to magically be able to tell their dogs to cross their legs and hold it when they've suddenly got the runs in a place where they are out of routine.

It sounds like this woman with the dog was trying her best, and just got caught out. People aren't perfect, and you need to cut them a little slack sometimes.

My dog rarely poos in my garden he saves it for walks, always on grass though.

This thread is ridiculous, sounds like the family involved did their best, not many people carry a jet wash and disinfectant in their back pocket. And as you've said it was all gone a few hours later no harm done

You have no idea if harm was done or not.
Dog dirt is toxic. It can cause blindness.

When my children were small any day out inevitably resulted in at least one of them getting it on their shoes- then they take their shoes off, they risk getting it on their hands. It’s completely unacceptable.

They did pick it up and attempt to wash it away. Do you struggle with reading comprehension?

There's only so much you can do in these situations op. Been there many times with my ddog. I am open to suggestions on how to sufficiently remove doggy diarrhoea from the pavement because it's really not easy when only armed with poo bags and bottled water.

Carry some large floor wipes and disposable gloves with you then. Pick up what you can and wipe up the rest. Bag it all & bin it. Job done.

I always pick up after my dog. But there will always be residue as you can not make clean the outside environment.
Come on... wet wipes on rough concrete? You can't get into the nooks and crannies of it all. There will always be something left behind.

Do you ever get diahorrea? So do dogs sometimes. I'm always mortified if my dog gets runny poo and has to go on the pavement. It's impossible to clean it up completely successfully.

Has it never occurred to you to try to clean up the residue? To carry some large floor wipes with you & disposable gloves? Pick up what you can, wipe up the rest, bag it all & bin it.

StarDolphins · 01/09/2024 22:30

i got as far as ‘snaked’. You’re far too invested in this shit!

Or get the old Dr Beckmann out that’s cleverly concealed in your handbag?

StarDolphins · 01/09/2024 22:32

All those sanitary sort that expect a full deep clean, you do know that streets are literally full of rat piss, right?

No... I think they want us to carry a jet wash and a can of Jeyes Fluid at all times. Then spray the air with some Dettol spray just in case someone catches a whiff of poo.
Never mind that a few foot away, the pavement was soaked the night before in piss from men leaving a pub.

Wipes will lift some of it though.
Isn’t it worth trying to clean it a bit more of it up rather than just shrugging and leaving it for someone to push their pram or wheelchair through?

So’s cat shit, shall we ban them too ?

Kids as well? I saw a small kid having a piss in the gutter in the High St the other day. Why should non kid owners have to put up with kids who have no need to be in a town centre shopping. 😁

Why the snark? I carry some baby wipes in my dog bag for this purpose - only had to use them once but it was easy enough to pick up what I could, wipe the rest, bag and bin. I don’t like walking in other dog’s shit, I don’t expect others to do the same in my dog’s shit.

Have you ever used a wet wipe on concrete? It just gets shredded.

I think the truth is coming out loud and clear here. Dog owners just can’t be bothered doing anything more than the bare minimum (if that) and are more than happy to inflict what their dear dog leaves behind on the rest of us.

while they’ve got their disposable gloves on & floor wipes out, they may as well extend the cleaning area to get up all the rat wee etc. make a thorough job of it I say.

MiaFeysImprobableBosom · 01/09/2024 22:41

People are talking about how ridiculous it would be to expect pristine sterilised pavements without even the slightest scientifically detectable trace of anything left behind, whereas I was under the impression we were discussing

quite a large sticky mess remaining in the street, so the woman half heartedly poured her water bottle over it. This did nothing to dislodge the mess, it just created a brown river of poo that snaked over half the street.

Leaving behind enough of the central shitpile for it to still be described as a "large sticky mess", which now also has an additional river of shit-water flowing away from it, is disgusting. Somebody could still step in the main pile, and lots of people will step in the runoff.

I don't expect or want people to get down on their hands and knees and scrub every microscopic fleck out from between the crevices in the tarmac, or sanitise the street to the point I could eat my dinner off it.

I want people to leave the pavement clean enough that children, distracted people, blind people or unlucky people won't accidentally end up with actual visible dogshit material squidged into the soles of their shoes, or dogshit gravy splashed on their trouser hems.

or you could train your dog to do its dirt in your own garden, rather than making it everyone else’s problem to sort out. 🤷🏼‍♀️
