So, one of the brothers has a divorce bill to pay. Apparently they have magically ‘got over’ their acrimony and will stage a come back - what an amazing coincidence! I still maintain:

a) they were a derivative, naive, band with absolutely rubbish lyrics.

b) they mercilessly exploited the hard man, brotherly feud shit in pursuit of loadsamoney

c) they should just go away and not inflict any more of their talent on us

d) I am cross with myself for even posting about this because it gives talentless white macho males the oxygen of publicity.

Discuss.

How do you know none are very good if you don’t know them? 🤷‍♀️

Music is so personal but to me some bands get so much unjustified fame.

I’m so sick of sub-par white male dudes ruling the airwaves. Although it does feel a bit like things are changing slowly.

I didn’t say that none of them are very good, I said I don’t know who they all are but none of them stand out as being any good.

So there’s no one on the list that makes me think ‘they’re great’ but I don’t know them all.

Your second paragraph is exactly how I feel about Led Zep, I just don’t get it. But I don’t have to, I’m not the arbiter of good musical taste.

Tumblingjungleofchaos · 25/08/2024 22:51

They were a bit shit. Always annoyed me they got so much attention. Preferred the Verve and Blur. Much better songwriting.

Loved Oasis. Blur were too smug.

DH likes Led Zeppelin, ugh.

You lost me at white man dudes.

Why? I’m white.

@Oochiesmoochies I was 16 when their music was everywhere, loads my age loved them and Blur, Pulp etc, we were also into old school house, so alternated between amazing clubs/raves and Indie nights and Britpop…Ahh the best days

Yeah the house and rave and general dance scenes were huge in that era. Hard to understand if you didnt live through them. My town had a huge rave club but alas I was just too young to get in before it promptly shut one day in 95 and the scene died out gradually. It was always more underground than chart stuff, with mixtapes getting swapped about in the playground. We never knew it at the time, but what a bloody time to be alive!!! Girls and Boys by blur at the school discos then some Italian piano house or rave with crazy MC'ing on the ghetto blaster at home. Nowadays the kids have Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift FML.

If a load of 50 year old men want to take coke and shout “You’re my Wonderwall” at each other for 90mins, and Liam Gallagher can charge them each £250 for the opportunity to do so, who am I to stop them? 🤷‍♀️

Haha this is exactly what it's going to be like, isn't it. Saddos.

Blur were a class act, looking back now. They aren’t in my top 20 but they are musically pretty skilled. and they’ve gone on to develop musically,

So you reckon Oasis are white boy, capitalists. But Blur, all white, privileged public school boys were a class act? LOL.

Turnitoffitsboring · 25/08/2024 22:56

@Oochiesmoochies A very special time, ideally I’d like to have been born a few years earlier, I was around 13 when all the great clubs and music was out…by around 17/18-95/96 it was starting to become more commercialised, still some good times but not the same. I also would’ve loved to have seen Stone roses during that era too

No one could touch them live in the 90s.
Quite a lot of snobbery on this thread, boorish louts etc. They, and many of their fans, came from a working class background. Capitalist? They had nothing. They made a lot of money and will bank more if this goes ahead, unless you are going to entertain for free then yes you are capitalist.

No one could touch them live in the 90s.

That's debatable. Much preferred:

Nirvana
Pixies
Smashing Pumpkins
Hole
P J Harvey

No, obviously I don’t think blur were the proletarian saviors of music. They are clearly very privileged white males. That doesn’t stop me thinking they are also very talented musicians.

oasis I object to because they are shitty musically and also portray a horrible boorish machismo I can’t stand. They’re literally marketising male twattishness for £££. I am from the same social class and geographical area as them so I sort of feel like I’m ok to slag em off ;)

Blur at least developed, and branched out into solo stuff and Gorillaz were a huge success. Noel just persisted with his whole grim up north thing and never once changed his haircut, moaning about the same oppressive shite despite sipping champagne with Tony Blair. Champagne Socialists are the worst possible kind.

And thats a good list @cupcaske123 Guns N Roses also had some memorable 90s gigs but as for British acts, I think Oasis did rule the roost in the 90s. But honestly can any fans seriously say they had any decent songs after their first 2 albums?!

29 years to the month it beat Oasis's terrible do you get a Roll With it to Number 1. I remember the countdown well, listening on my walkman on a bus.

As for the video, Blur were a laugh, with Phil Daniels and Jo Guest horsing about. Oasis were from a bygone era like the bloody stone roses, joyless has beens all moody and taking their music, terrible lyrics and 3 chord so damn seriously. GIve me Albarn and Coxon any day!

Just for shits and giggles

RedToothBrush · 25/08/2024 23:08

They were excellent live initially. But I would argue that by 2002 Liam's vocals had definitely seen better times. It was really a shame. I actually think that Noel's vocals were arguably always better, but Oasis needed that sneer for certain songs that Noel just couldn't do.

There were other bands who were great live, but Oasis were my absoluete fav for a very long time and they got me into music when other bands didn't.

I saw Blur live a few times, and they left me cold tbh. They didn't connect with the audience and I remember getting slightly annoyed by it at one gig. As for Radiohead... zzz. Never ever liked them. Totally pretentious wank.

The whole beauty of Oasis was the fact that their songs connected with so many people because they were simple. And its a simplicity thats actually a lot harder to do than people realise.
