Oasis are reforming. Yack.

So, one of the brothers has a divorce bill to pay. Apparently they have magically ‘got over’ their acrimony and will stage a come back - what an amazing coincidence! I still maintain:

a) they were a derivative, naive, band with absolutely rubbish lyrics.

b) they mercilessly exploited the hard man, brotherly feud shit in pursuit of loadsamoney

c) they should just go away and not inflict any more of their talent on us

d) I am cross with myself for even posting about this because it gives talentless white macho males the oxygen of publicity.

Discuss.

I used to love them in the 90s. Cannot stand either of them now. Honestly they are such arseholes.

I quite liked them back in the day and think they had some good songs but am not remotely tempted to go and see them now

Something I really object to, more than anything Oasis related, is being told to "discuss" anything, how patronising!

lol I agree it was very cringe

Radiohead asked you to hold their sherry.

I also remember first listening to OK Computer and its a journey in a way Oasis could only dream of. I'd not call it pretentious @RedToothBrush , more genius and on a different level to Oasis and the Britpop crew who did bring more fun to proceedings. Lets be honest Oasis's music was no better than Ocean Colour Scene, or The Charlatans, say but they had the hype, the swagger, the bad boy image. They knew how to get in the media. But my goodness so many songs were dross.

As for Radiohead... zzz. Never ever liked them. Totally pretentious wank.

I completely understand why an Oasis fan would think that.

What because I am defined by my love of Oasis alone? I love all kinds of music. I just never liked Radiohead. Thats all.

I just found them tedious.

Messen · 25/08/2024 23:15

radiohead. I never actually enjoyed listening to them as they were way too serious for me but they were SO good technically and now I’m older I can’t believe I wrote them off.

discuss 😂

Ordinarily I don’t post when the OP says ‘discuss’, but on this occasion you’re absolutely correct - although anyone mad enough to give money to the whining pair of tossers don’t deserve any sympathy.

Messen · 25/08/2024 23:18

I’d go so far as to say I actively disliked Radiohead in the 1990s.

on the plus side this meant I had so many (quality new to me) albums to enjoy in my 30s and 40s :)

I don’t mind the odd Radiohead song but I wasn’t / am not a huge fan.

I preferred Pulp and James, both of which still sound pretty good to me.

I think the Charlatans have actually aged a lot better.

At their height Oasis were a better show and band than the Charlies, who I think matured and peaked later. I like some of their later albums much better than Tellin' Stories which was contempary with Oasis's golden era.

I didn't particularly like OCS tbh. I saw them a few times, but they were ok no more tbh.

It wasn't purely hype. It struck a certain chord.

Whatever is an incredible song even now. I was 17, and it just connected with that point in my life. Live Acquiesce and Slide Away were two brilliant. Then when Noel did his acoustic slot mid set.

TBH, I didn't care much for Wonderwall. And Stand By Me is like nails down a blackboard for me. And I think Heathen Chemistry is somewhat underrated.

James were FABULOUS.

They had a period where they played Manchester just before Christmas for a number of years and those gigs were always brilliant.

Tell us who you like. We might get some ideas and leads :)

Again. I’m not the arbiter of good musical taste and don’t claim to be but given that you’ve asked, my current play list has a big range from Sam Cooke, Solomon Burke and Aretha Franklin, Jim Croce, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen to Orbital, Eminem, Faithless, Dreadzone, Rage Against the Machine, Green Day and a load of other stuff including Dolly Parton and Tom Petty.

Oblomov24 · 25/08/2024 23:26

Oh dear. Desperate for money.

Messen · 25/08/2024 23:27

I’m really sorry I used the word “discuss”.
It’s been a tiring and pretty challenging week. I can’t do real people and full sentences. Don’t read anything into this …

@RedToothBrush As I mentioned before the only album I bought was The Masterplan. Damn I still love the Masterplan single to this day. I guess I like morose songs sometimes! Plus Oasis were pals with OCS werent they. I saw OCS once and I was a big fan, again the music was more melancholy, perhaps suited me more than Oasis's more angry/whiny tracks. But what good bloody times! We never knew how lucky we were. The noughties wasnt bad, I saw Stereophonics and Editors but I must say the past 15 years or so I've lost intertest in guitar music. Sam Fender probably the only emerging talent on my radar.

See I like almost all of those. Sam Cooke and Stevie Wonder In particular.

checking back I think I quoted you when I meant to quote someone else. I’m so sorry! My fault

You weren’t at all rude: someone else was.

I could never disagree with anyone who rates Stevie Wonder because he is a genius.

Music is so personal

Slightly ironic that you say this and then slag off any Oasis fans. Maybe those fans think that their music is personal to them 🤷‍♀️

RoseUnder · 25/08/2024 23:38

A lot of classicism and snobbery in how people talk about oasis then and now. People in the music industry used to refer to them as “damaged goods” because they said they’d been raised so badly they couldn’t possibly behave professionally. Poor Peggy.

Not like the nicely brought up, middle class, university graduates Blur…. and Damon Albarn who relatively recently pretended he’d never heard of Taylor Swift, because he’s so above that kind of mass appeal music…

He really is.

We have a family playlist on Spotify, it’s the most bizarre collection of music ever I think 🤣

PanettoneSoprano · 25/08/2024 23:41

I've been in love with Liam for about 28 years (in another time or space, maaaaybeeeeeee we could have been together ❤️) so I'll be queueing for tickets, definitely.

FrothyCothy · 25/08/2024 23:41

Hasn’t Graham Coxon been accused previously of some very sketchy (possibly abusive?) behaviour?

FrothyCothy · 25/08/2024 23:43

I caught a documentary about Liam a few years ago over Christmas, was in the period where he and Noel weren’t speaking. He came across as desperate for his brother’s attention/affection and quite lost really. I warmed to him.

Turnitoffitsboring · 25/08/2024 23:46

@RedToothBrush You sound the same age and from the same place as me possibly

Squirrelsnut · 25/08/2024 23:47

Colombia is a work of genius. They had a few spectacular songs and a LOT of charisma and swagger. They aren't hurting anyone.

I love Sam Fender and Jake Bugg.

OCS were mates with Oasis.

It's interesting to see who have aged well and who haven't.

Bruce Springsteen is incredible live. Without a doubt one of the best acts I've seen.

Yes music is very personal and also often goes hand in hand with the period in life you are at.

And music ages differently retrospectively too.

I hated the Stereophonics back in the 90s but listening to a few of their tracks now, I really like them and they've aged well. It is interesting to listen back to things you liked in the past.

I can't say the last time I played an Oasis album strangely (the b-sides were better anyway!) though I listen to Manchester radio so they are always on.

Oasis were personal to me for a lot of differing reasons.

Btw going back to the snobbery over them and comments about fans - they shared a lot of the fan base with other bands - but Oasis's definitely ended up attracting the worse behaviour by their final years which was depressing. Plenty of working class fans managed to go and enjoy various other bands without being utter dickheads - I actually find the idea that working class = poor behaviour at gigs pretty offensive. A dickhead is just a dickhead.

I went to a load of gigs all over the country and beyond (following various bands not just Oasis). But yeah Manchester was where I saw most.

Only Glasgow beats Manchester for crowds. London gigs never had the same level of crazy.
