Back to Taylor. DD and I are having breakfast in our hotel (surrounded by other sad Swifties), and looking back over her previous comments about terrorism we are certain she is planning to reschedule. She hasn’t said anything yet and a simple ‘devastated’ statement would be quick. But rescheduling will be complicated. It would have to be after Dec 15, so we are hoping for a Christmas trip back to Vienna!

It’ll be waaaaaaaay too cold for an open air stadium show in Vienna in December… if it’s rescheduled at all I would imagine it won’t be before next spring.

Not the point of the thread, but "terror threats related to Ireland" is quite the description for a civil war in the UK.

I don’t think many even realise it was a civil war!

It wasn't a civil war- but if you want to argue that suggest you start your own thread. The IRA was a terrorist organisation.

The IRA was indeed a terrorist organisation. As were the UVF and the UDA. You'll find very mixed views on the Army too.

If you know anything about NI, you'll know that referring to even the IRA as "related to Ireland" is a vast and offensive over simplification of the history here, the events that led to the Troubles and the losses of the Troubles themselves. If you don't know that, then I sincerely recommend reading up on the history of the Troubles - many in GB seem unaware of that within their lifetimes the UK has had both a brutal war and a miraculous peace deal.

Drogdab · 08/08/2024 11:05

@WickieRoy MNs has taught most have no idea re The Troubles.

I also hate to say it too @tootyfruitypickle , but I don't think they'll reschedule either. The cost, and time, of shipping all the staging back over the Atlantic from the US where it's needed for existing dates, just for 3 nights in Vienna, means I think their only option is to cancel.

I'm so sorry you and yours are experiencing this. It must be awful. 😔

Yup. I'm here well over a decade and it still surprises me how little so many know of their own history. You'd think the GFA would be worth shouting from the rooftops!

Drogdab · 08/08/2024 11:09

And yet there are so many experts on international disputes 😆😆

Drogdab · 08/08/2024 11:11

15, that’s so depressing.

These Far Right and racist men have no place in Western society.

I watched an absolutely heart stopping programme on the lead up to an arena attack. It focussed on teens and I found gave good insight into how and why

Really stuck with me. Obviously it’s just one version but I don’t think we’re paying enough attention to this reality

Because IS are good at online grooming, which begins with selecting from those they come across - looking for the vulnerable and manipulating them

It can’t be quite the same as the grooming by sexual predators, because the acts they want the targets to commit are so different; but there surely has to be similarities.

IS has not been attacking the West in recent years as frequently as before, but the reasons (hatred of the West and everything it stands for, desire to spread their version of the true way of living, willingness to eliminate others in that struggle) have stayed consistent.

I guess only the security experts will be able to assess if this is one-off, or a sign of renewed capabilities and strategy. And I guess they won’t be making those assessments public

Drogdab · 08/08/2024 11:26

But how do you persuade people to commit mass murder of innocents seemingly so quickly?

Surely at 15 parents or guardians have to be held in someway responsible for their children's online activity.. As a mother of teens, this is chilling..

I think it is also because Taylor Swift stood up for herself, walked away from her music firm and started all over. She even had to record her own music again. Yet, she made it. She is still big, top of the charts and successfull.
She is an example of strong independant female to all those young girls

I have a young TS fan here and I can honestly say she has no idea of TS’s background and history. She just likes singing along to the songs as do all her friends. I very much doubt they even attempt to interpret the lyrics. For my DD TS is not an example of a strong independent female. That might be the case for grown women or older teens but not for TS’s main audience of under 12s.

I liked Kylie and Jason Donovan at that age and again I had no idea of what Kylie or Jason represented.

That is why I asked the original question of why TS fans but I think other posters answered that it’s just an easy target and not any different to underground stations and I think they are right.

Edited

It can be, anything that gives them maximum number of victims I suppose. But I always take into account that at 12, you cannot go to concerts that your parents do not approve of. So who your parents have in their ok list is of vital importance too, and we do know a bit about Taylor herself.
I can imagine the police is asking these sort of questions to the arrested as we speak.

I don’t think that is the case tbh.
I suppose TS is so big (partly because of the concert code nonsense) I do know more about her but I can’t say the same for Olivia Rodrigo Olivia Martinez, Sabrina Carpenter and I’d happily bring DD to their concerts without doing any background research on them. She is too young for Harry Styles but his drug taking wouldn’t have put me off taking her to his concerts. I don’t think the parents of TS fans are bringing them to concerts because they want their daughters to imitate her.

there has been mention of Islam because the Austrian authorities have reported that the perpetrators have given an allegiance to Isis. They're not a buddhist organisation.

Saudi Arabia specifically speaks out against ISIS ( Daesh as they call it) as a terror organisation, shows that they definitely don’t approve of the terror group’s actions.

Pedallleur · 08/08/2024 11:57

It would be headline news if it succeeded just like 9/11 or Manchester Arena. Young boys/men watching Andrew Tate or Isis or any other hate influencers are becoming a real issue.

Of course chopping up a journalist is entirely justified.

@EasternStandard what was it?

Swedish I think on Netflix I’ll try to think of name

To me it showed the grooming very well as mentioned in pp as it focuses on about 15, 16 year olds and their susceptibility

The idea that online radicalisation/ grooming is picking up is hugely concerning as they obviously don’t need to be in actual f2f contact

circular1985 · 08/08/2024 12:22

We were due to travel via London to Vienna and have non refundable train tickets and hotel booked in London. For anyone in London, is there certain areas we should avoid given the riots etc.

If it's true I would prefer if we were treated like adults & told the truth. The Austrian police were very quick to tell it like it is.

Surely it would take time to look into the teenager’s internet history?
How do they know for sure that he hasn’t been radicalised?

When the trial takes place, more might be made public.

It seems more suspicious now that three other teens have planned against Taylor Swift events.

Well done to Austrian police for finding out these threats before the event.

A major tragedy averted, hopefully.

Yes, the intelligence did very well. I also commend them for telling the truth matter of factly, it was a foiled IS terrorist attack & people need to be aware that these threats still very much exist. Transparency is key when dealing with the public.
