Looks like he took chemicals from a Steel plant he worked at with his father

From the article:
Austrian media reported the suspects' plans included driving a car into groups of Swifties expected to gather outside the venue before attacking with machetes and knives. They had reportedly planned to launch their attack today.

Beran A. fully confessed to his plans to 'kill as many people as possible outside the concert venue', Austrian security officials said.
His planned terror attack was supposed to end with him detonating his homemade bomb and killing himself in the process, according to the Austrian Heute newspaper

IS-Fanatiker Beran wollte "Ungläubige in Wien" töten

Die Tat war eiskalt geplant. Der islamistische Terrorist aus Ternitz (19) gestand inzwischen alles. Was man bisher über Beran A. weiß.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle which would be the definition of far right and racist? All religious extremists are far right, and people who want to destroy a type of race would be known as racist?

No. Your definitions are far too simplistic.

The religious extremists in Vienna are not racists actually. Their hatred is of secular Western liberal democracy. They, and the people they hate, can be and are of many races. Their hatred is not race based. They will hate people of their own race.

The extreme Islamists are also anti- capitalist- being anti- capitalist is a left wing position.

Does more need to be done by governments to keep u18s offline to prevent radicalisation, bullying, grooming & so much more?

Does more need to be done by parents to keep u18s offline....?

Multiple threads here on MN.....
Oh s/he has to have a phone to walk to and from school safely
Oh s/he has to have a phone to keep in touch with friends, s/he would be isolated otherwise
Oh s/he has to have [app s/he is years too young for] it's how they all keep in touch these days
Oh I never check his/her phone, it would be an invasion of privacy
Oh I don't set limits on their phone usage, my kids self regulate

This has worrying echoes of a recent tragedy
Thank goodness Austrian intelligence were onto these terrorists.

I think it's notable on the thread that despite the news saying one of the people was in with Isis barely anyone has dared to breathe a word about religion. That's why we have the ridiculousness of people saying "it's men" because it's easier to tar half the population than to be honest that it is religious fundamentalisism. Yes let's just pretend it's "men".

It’s the elephant in the room.

Yep I totally agree it is parents responsibility but not all parents agree that in that respect. I think that governments have the power to make it illegal for u18s to have access to smartphones & many online sites. If children possess or access these sites ultimately can parents be charged as u18 are still viewed as children in the eyes of the law. There needs to be much more around parental accountability & responsibility legally.

Are you being serious with this suggestion?

I can't believe we're twenty-something years into the current iteration of Islamic terrorist attacks in UK/Europe and we're discussing smart phones.

I was thinking this. I thought 19 was mentioned, that’s a young man! I was in my late teens in late nineties and my Parents didn’t really know much about what I did, didn’t do in terms of socialising. Things like I’m going to this gig with Jess and Lara but ultimately not why I was interested in that music, that fashion. Of course phones weren’t available but the late teens are becoming adults and that has stayed the same you can’t micro manage everything.

I think most people just know that the terrorists aren't actually doing it "because Islam" any more than the terrorists of either stripe in NI did it "because Christianity". Faith is just the excuse, it always is, regardless of the faith chosen.

She should be ecstatic that this was discovered and that she's safe!

OR disappointed and angry that a few extremists have ruined something she was very much looking forward to.

perfectlyann · 08/08/2024 16:04

I wish that were true @WickieRoy but it's a massive stretch to suggest that Islam has nothing to do with these Isis led/influenced incidents!

I think there needs to be parental responsibility surrounding Internet & smartphone usage yes, absolutely. The amount of bullying, harassment, incitement of violence, radicalisation, pro anorexia forums is absolutely off the scale. It needs to be tackled & all society needs to play it's part.

Reports on X saying the attackers had been hired as security guards for the concert.

These big events are going to have to massively up their game with respect to security.

This is awful.

Why are TS's fans being targeted in particular?

Mainly just very young girls who like dancing and singing and dressing up. Why them and not grown adults who are voting for various Governments (not that we should be targeted either obviously).

It is awful - but this has sadly happened before "to adults" - my personal friend's band EODM was the scene of terror attack in France a few years ago at the Bataclan.
One of our friends, one of the roadies was killed and he was one of the nicest men you could ever meet.

It's heartbreaking that they're seemingly aiming more for performers who have a young, predominantly female fanbase - I also lost a friend (Georgina) in the Ariana Grande attack in Manchester and I think Taylor is the most popular female pop singer around right now.

It's terrifying that we live in such a world of vitriolic hatred where so many people aren't too scared to act upon their hatred and will willingly attack no matter who or what is the target.

I've long thought that if you wanted to unleash an attack you'd get behind the scenes, in security, ticket sales, catering for the venues. Greater access, knowledge of the venue, insider info etc. I wonder how security guards and stadium/arena staff are vetted? And do they have to have the equivalent of a dbs? And that would only highlight those who
had a previous conviction.

BMW6 · 08/08/2024 16:19

It would be such a shame if they all met with unfortunate lethal accidents in custody. Not.

Goldenbear · 08/08/2024 15:11

I understand your point but if under 18s didn’t have access to Smartphones how would the interest in Taylor Swift and her fanbase which I many young girls have been established?

Equally, looking at this weeks events many people over 18 would be better off without a smartphone and they would be better of reading a book!

How did we ever know anything about music or celebrity before smartphones??

@oakleaffy thank you! I'm trying to come up with a fun itinerary for the girls. Thinking the Taylor exhibition in Kensington then a west end show.

10 minutes walk from the exhibition is the anya hindmarch ice cream pop up - my dd liked that this week. All flavours come from brands ranging from penguin biscuits to soy sauce!

That's an inflated account, based on the official Austrian statement, which is that the 17 yo had secured a job with a company that would provide (unspecified) services at the stadium.
